Derek Whaley is a 2021 OF/RHP/UT with a 5-10 155 lb. frame from Lake Shore, MD who attends Chesapeake. Derek has a slim, yet athletic build. He leans heavily on his consistent fundamental base, playing with great effort and energy. He ran an impressive 6.91 60 yard dash. A primary outfielder, Derek has a commendable defensive game. He is quick to position. He plays through the fielding action with routine effort and transitions to throw quite well. His 77 mph throwing velocity allows his tosses to have routine carry and sound consistent accuracy to the target. At the plate, Derek uses a contact first approach. He keeps his hands inside the ball well and shows a flatter bat plane. His path is consistent and he gets his barrel to routine contact. Although his approach will never allow for much power, he is a consistent striker of the baseball and can hit line drives up the middle and to the opposite field with regularity. There is a place for consistent contact hitters, like Derek, in any line up. Derek shows sound skills. His projection to the next level will hinge largely on his dedication to a consistent workout routine that will involve a consistent effort in the weight room.
