LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2020 South Prospect Showcase
Matthew Espinoza is a 2024 RHP with a 5-11 160 lb. frame from San Antonio, TX who attends Smithson Valley HS. A young and aspiring player, Matthew shows emerging athletic ability and a noticeable passion for the game. His sound fundamental base will serve him well as he continues to gain experience on the field. He ran an 8.25 60 yard dash. A primary RHP, Matthew has a feel for throwing two solid pitches. He uses a slow and deliberate operation that he repeats well. He works down the slope consistently, repeating his mechanics and high 3/4 arm slot routinely. He pitches off his 75-77 mph fastball that he works to both edges of the plate. His 65 mph sharp breaking curveball is a pitch that is noticeably sound for his age group. He has a feel for both spin and command and can work this pitch to both sides of the plate. His curve shows sound depth at the plate and produces a lot of poor swings and weak contact. More than anything, Matthew is a strike thrower, which is an admirable trait for a younger pitcher. Although Matthew's future probably lies on the mound, he did take his turn a first base and showed quite well. He has consistent footwork that allows him to position well. He reads the ball off the bat well and his timing to field is sound. His softer hands and glove play. He transitions to throw with consistency and his 73 mph throws show routine accuracy. At the plate, Matthew starts with a wide base and utilizes a "contact first" mentality. There is some obvious strength in his hands. His flatter swing plane and middle-of-the-field mentality allow him to get his barrel to and through contact quite well. As he continues to add physicality/strength and mature his frame, he will unquestionably develop into a sound and consistent offensive player. Matthew is well on his way to being a solid, if not advanced, high school player with promising upside.
