Jake Wells is a 2019 OF/LHP with a 5-10 150 lb. frame from Sparta, NJ who attends Pope John XXIII. Medium frame with a lean, athletic build. Projects for additional size with strength. Left handed hitter with a wide stance, leg lift trigger and high hand/back elbow set. High contact swing plane with some natural lift through extension. Mid-field approach with bat speed that produces line drive, ground ball contact. Consistently delivered barrel to contact on time with the hand skills to hit to all fields at times. Worked out defensively from the outfield compact, athletic actions while closing on the baseball. Small curl hop into throws from a three-quarters arm slot. Throws produce accurate carry to the bag at 77 mph. Clean glove skills while working throw transition with smooth glove to hand exchanges. Also pitched showing smooth, repeatable mechanics. Worked ahead of hitter early, locating down in the zone with a fastball in the mid 70's, topped at 78 mph. Curveball has solid spin and some depth in the upper 50's. Worked both sides of the plate extremely well. Filled the zone consistently and was able to stay away from hard contact. Good student as well.
