Latest Showcase Report
2004 South Top Prospect Showcase   Jul 25, 2004
PG Grade: 10
Samuel Elam is a 2005 LHP from Mesquite, TX. Elam was the big surprise of the Showcase, as even the local college coaches professed no prior knowledge of him. How a 6'4" southpaw who throws 90 mph can stay hidden is a mystery, but that’s what these events are held to cure. Elam showed good athletic ability during infield workouts and is a graceful player. He throws from a full deliberate windup and gets up high on his toes at release to generate even more leverage and downward plane from his high ¾ release point. Elam’s 88-90 mph fastball had excellent life in the strike zone, cutting sometimes and getting hard late sink at others. He threw about 80% fastballs and mixed in an occasional change up (77-79 mph) and curveball (69-70 mph) while striking out six hitters in two innings of work. He did struggle with a consistent release point on his curveball. This is a pro prospect who we’re very anxious to see throw more in the future. Samuel is an excellent student.
