2004 World Showcase   Jan 10, 2004
PG Grade: 10
McGahey was a little limited by a sore hamstring and didn’t get to throw off the mound in Fort Myers but everything he did get to do was very very impressive. His power display in batting practice was worth the price of admission alone. McGahey is extra strong at 6-3, 210 lbs and hits from an upright stance that maximizes his leverage. He utilizes his very quick hips to key his swing and really turns on the ball aggressively, generating well above average MLB loft power. McGahey’s batting practice home runs were the high back spinning types that seem to stay in the air forever. He is prone to getting out in front of the ball and rolling over a bit, as many power hitters are. McGahey ran a 7.12 at the start of the showcase, so he’s not a big one spot power guy either. He could probably do well in one of the corner outfield positions with his mobility and arm strength. His arm strength might be his best tool, he's a 90 mph lefty on the hill. McGahey is a good student who has signed to go to Virginia Tech next year. MLB clubs should consider him early in June.
