Chavez is a 5-9, 175 lb catcher from New Mexico. He showed some good arm strength and quickness during defensive drills, throwing 76 mph and recording a best pop time of 1.86. Chavez also threw 2.19 in the games. Chavez ran 7.82 in the 60. He didn’t do much in batting practice, jumping open and out front in his swing and slapping the ball up the middle but was a different hitter during the games. He stayed back much better on pitches and showed some gap to gap power, hitting 3 doubles in 2 games. Chavez’s outs were even pretty hard hit. This kid has a chance to play at a high level. Keep an eye on him. Chavez is a good student.
