2006 California Showcase-Aug 26 & 27
Douglas Hiner is a 2007 OF with a 5'8'', 155 lb. frame from San Jacinto CA, who attends Rancho Verde HS. Hiner has a compact build with some present day strength in his core area. Though there is limited physical upside, he swings the bat pretty well and should continue to get better. His bat is quick and his swing has whippy life, getting through the hitting zone pretty easily. Hiner does a nice job of keeping the barrel in the zone for a long time, allowing him to hit offspeed pitches as well as the fastball. He lets the ball travel and is willing to let it get deep in the zone, making him a tough out. His hands are short and direct to the ball and consistently stay inside. Hiner swings aggressively, stays balanced, and frankly has a very nice hitting approach. Defensively he takes good angles to the ball and is an accurate thrower. His all-around skills should translate well to the college game. He is a good student and seems to also be a student of how to play the game fundamentally well.
