John Stein is a 2007 SS/3B from Los Osos HS, residing in Upland, CA, with a 5'9" 170 lb. frame. He has a compact build with some strength and decent body control. Stein, a right handed hitter, hits from a square stance and displayed a simple, effective offensive approach. He has good balance during his swing which is an efficient, simple swing. Stein is a contact type hitter with good bat control. He works to stay inside the ball and he consistently stayed in the middle of field, an indication of a hand path that is consistently good. Stein generally showed a pretty short and quick route to the ball with enough bat speed to compete at the collegiate level. As a defensive player he sets up to the ball well and he is aggressive to the ball. Stein, listed at SS/3B has feet that work best for 3rd base. His hands show some promise while his release and arm strength work best for him at 2nd base. He ran 4.73 home to first, an indication that his range is also suited best for 3rd base. Stein is a good follow type for small college programs. He can handle the bat a bit and competes well enough to compete on the college level.
