Nico Ortiz is a 2021 1B/RHP, OF, 3B with a 6-2 205 lb. frame from Pomona, CA who attends Damien. Primary first baseman with a large frame and athletic build. Moves through the ball well, flashes the ability to move well laterally with some developing range. Has a deeper funnel with stiff hands at times, rushing the gather and making accurate throws to bases from a three-quarters slot at 79 miles per hour. Has an upright and even stance at the plate with a simple leg lift trigger and rotational lower half. Flashes quick hands to contact with a line drive barrel plane. Hands are static at load, and flashes some bat speed when the rest of the swing is on time. Developing consistency of power at the plate. On the mound, works from the windup with a small side step into a belt high leg lift. Stays slightly flexed at gather, leading into drop and drive actions down the mound. Has good linear direction at foot strike before falling off the first base side at release. Long, loose arm action with a mid three-quarters arm slot. Has good downhill plane to a fastball at 78-to-80 miles per hour, flashing good feel for a curveball with 10-to-4 shape at 68 miles per hour. Developing command with both pitches.
