Mateo Velasquez is a 2018 RHP/OF with a 5-9 147 lb. frame from Fresno, CA who attends Central High East Campus. Medium frame with some present strength. Projects for additional size with strength. Right handed pitcher with a high energy, leg lift delivery. Drives to plate with some downhill angle while landing in a slightly close position. Long arm circle with slight hook below the belt at separation. Releases from a three-quarters arm slot that produces some cutting action with fastball offering. Effectively missed barrel and induced weak contact with the cutting action. Curveball has 12/6 shape with softer spin and some downward depth. Mixed and matching all pitches well with good composure while on the mound. Right handed hitter with a tall, open stance and high back elbow set. Stacks weight back at load and shift into contact with rotational lower half actions. Extended, loose path the contact with a downhill swing plane. Swing mechanics produced consistent line drive, ground ball contact to the middle of the field and opposite field. Also worked out defensively from the outfield showing smooth paced actions while closing on the baseball and working through transition. Clean glove skills while exchanging into throws. Long arm circle back at separation and creates good arm whip with an extended arm action at release. Throws create some on line carry with good accuracy to the bag, topped at 76 mph. Very good student. Tools will continue to develop with physical maturity.
