PG Grade: 8
Nickols is a 6 foot 5 left-hander with a strong 215 pond body. He showed us a good arm action from over-the-top and an easy delivery that produced 84-86 mph fastballs topping out at 87. His arm was so effortless it appeared that he lacked enough arm speed to throw even 85 mph. He threw a 68-70 mph curve but on occasion flashed one at 74 and 75 mph with the same break and path, just harder. It's a good pitch when it is thrown hard. We liked what we saw in potential even more than what he showed in the game. An impressive trait was the fact that he got stronger as he continued to pitch. His velocity crept up to a consistent 86 mph in the 3rd inning in 112 degree mid afternoon heat. He has a special arm and we hope to see him again before the end of the summer.
