Alfaro is a 5-9, 165 lb senior infielder from Texas with very good present strength. He ran the 60 in 7.46 threw 79 mph during infield drills. Alfaro was very quick down the line on ground balls and registered 4.15 on one hustling effort. Alfaro's game arm strength from both second base and shortstop is far better than his drill velocity. He has confidence in his arm and will frequently flip the ball to quicken his release. When he needed fire the ball in games, he really got some juice behind it. Alfaro's hands work well and he's capable of playing any infield position well. Offensively, Alfaro has a long, whippy swing with impressive bat speed. It takes a while for him to get the bat going with busy hands and a long wrap but he gets through the ball well and really extends past contact. Alfaro drilled the ball almost every at bat during the games and it became a bit of a joke because everyone was right at a fielder. The ball jumps off his bat with authority. His last line drive, which actually went for a hit, was 93 mph off the bat. Alfaro also pitched a bit and showed his arm strength from the mound, topping out at 86 mph with a very quick, short arm stroke. Alfaro's secondary pitches aren't developed yet but his future is as a strong armed infielder with some juice in his bat. Alfaro's brother played in the Astros organization and reached the Big Leagues for a cup of coffee and J.D. has similar physical tools at the same point in their development.
