Turn 2 Comes Back to Take BCS

Photo: Turn 2 Garcia (Perfect Game)
A mostly clear day at Lee Health Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Florida set the stage for a tightly contested championship matchup between Florida Burn 2028 Myrback and Turn 2 Garcia. Behind two triples from Quinn Seglem, Turn 2 rallied for a 5-4 victory to claim the BCS Qualifier title.

Left-hander Carter Brunco started on the mound for Turn 2, allowing six hits and four walks while striking out two over 3.2 innings.

Burn jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Luke Straw singled and later advanced to third on a wild pitch before Joe O’Brien delivered an RBI single to score the game’s first run. Blake Dubiel followed with another RBI single to give Burn a 2-0 advantage.

Right-hander Straw carried the momentum onto the mound for Burn, holding Turn 2 hitless through the first two innings while recording a strikeout in each.

In the top of the second, Spencer Meachum singled and nearly added another run for Burn before shortstop Brody Meyer fired a throw to the plate to end the inning.

Turn 2 shifted the momentum in the bottom of the third. Seglem tripled and later scored on a single by Nolan Macneil to cut into the deficit.

“I was trying not to overthink it and just hit the ball,” Seglem said.

Turn 2 turned to right-hander Tyler Fonock in relief during the fourth inning. Fonock, a nationally ranked top 1000 player, settled in quickly, striking out three while allowing two earned runs and just one walk.

Seglem said Fonock’s command gave the team confidence.

“When we put [Fonock] in, we started throwing the ball better, stopped making errors and hit the ball,” he said.

Burn right-hander Evan Swope entered with the bases loaded, no outs and the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Despite the pressure, Swope allowed just one hit and no walks over three innings.

Shortly after Swope entered the game, Seglem delivered again with a three-run triple for his second triple of the day to put Turn 2 ahead 5-2.

“[Quinn] just attacked the ball when he was up to bat,” Turn 2 coach Anthony Brunco said.

Burn continued to battle late in the game. Dubiel went 2-3 with an RBI single, while Elijah Benton finished 2-4 with a triple to help keep Burn within striking distance. However, Fonock recorded a strikeout to seal the 5-4 victory for Turn 2.

Seglem, who accounted for two of Turn 2’s three hits, was the MVP of the day after going 2-2 and raising his batting average to .444 through five games.

He credited his success to “staying connected, believing in myself and just hitting the ball.”

With the win, Turn 2 earned a free bid to the 16U BCS National Championship, scheduled for July 23-27 in Fort Myers.

“It means a lot,” Seglem said. “We worked really hard.”

Coach Brunco said he was most proud of his team’s relentlessness.

“They got down, kept fighting, big hits, big moments,” he said. “They’re overly confident”

The victory improved Turn 2’s record to 8-1-1 on the season.

“They know they’re the best, play like they’re best, prepare like they’re the best and perform like they’re the best,” Coach Brunco said.

Hortenbury was probably one of my personal favorites, as this was my first time seeing it in action. It’s an athletic two-way profile that has a chance to do both at the next level. But what stood out to me, was his potential on the mound. The left-handed pitcher moves very well and is comfortable there. Has the mound presence Supplemented with a free-flowing and loose arm from a higher ¾ slot, he pounded the zone in his lone appearance. He went...

Following a dominant week at the 17u PG East World Series, No. 34 ranked 643 DP Cougars 17u capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating No. 2 ranked East Cobb Astros 17u, 3-2, in the championship game to claim the title. The Cougars earned the tournament's No. 1 overall seed after outscoring opponents by an absurd 59-6 throughout the week before completing their championship run with a hard-fought victory in the finale. “Always feels great to finish the year playing your best ball, especially when going up against strong competition,” 643 Head Coach Danny Pralgo said. “We did so many of the little things right: on the mound with location, clean on defense, bunting, 2 strike approach leading to long at bats, getting hit-by-pitches, and we had so many good outs offensively that led to moving a runner or scoring a runner. And when those things all come together in...

A tightly contested battle between Canes Florida 2029 and Florida Flames 16u capped the 16U Florida Elite Championship, with the Canes earning a 6-5 walk-off win on Monday at JetBlue Park Stadium. “It means a lot to this team specifically because this is their first win as a group,” Canes head coach Alec Bettinger said. “We’ve come up short a couple times, so seeing one go through the hoop here is really nice for the boys.” The Canes defense came out hot, led by Cannon Tyler who started on the mound for the Canes. Tyler set the tone from the start, opening the game with a strikeout. He allowed no hits while striking out three over five innings. His fastball sat 77-82 mph.
