Gateway World Series Scout Notes

14U

Aj Dungan (‘28, Old Hickory, Tenn.)- Listed at 6”3 160 lbs, this right hander should be considered when talking about the best pitchers in the class of 2028. His fastball sits in the low to mid 80s, topping out at 85 MPH. It had an incredible run on it that had fantastic deception coming out of the hand. He consistently had great sequencing, messing up hitters timing consistently. When looking at a pitcher who can produce at higher levels, they need to make competitive pitches throughout any count, and that is what he did which impressed me the most.



Kai Fredrick (‘28, Omaha, Neb.)- Typically the starting shortstop for the Nebraska Prospects Scout team, Kai hopped on the mound and showed out. His movement on his fastball impressed me the most. With the way baseball is transitioning, having a two seamer that has this much run to it is exactly what teams are looking for. The way he worked that pitch on the outside corners made every right handed hitter look confused, especially with his breaking ball that combined to be a lethal one two punch. He topped out at 81 but sat comfortably in the 77-79 range.

Ben Mohesky (‘28, Eureka, Mo.)- Currently ranked as the 2nd best third basemen in the state for the STL Legacy-Gianno. His swing is fluid and looks pretty when watching film. He keeps his hands high and back but it does not slow him down as he has extremely quick hands. When I watched him rip a double into the gap, it was not the best AB at first, falling behind 0-2 but his approach changed, he picked himself up, and drilled an extra base hit. His power upside, with a solid 6”0 frame, is something to look out for in the near future.

15/16U

Gavin Weir (‘27, Sioux Falls, South Dakota)- I will start this off by saying I’m not sure whether to put Gavin in this section or the 17/18U section because he played in BOTH divisions this weekend and was easily the best all around player. He is truly a gifted ball player that will go far in this sport. He has a terrific approach at the plate, seemingly a walking double. He happens to be as close to a five tool player as you’ll see in this age group. His main strength is pitching. Showcasing a ridiculous breaking ball that had ridiculous movement. He sits in the mid 80s as a lefty and it was easy to see why he is the #1 pitcher in the state of South Dakota. 

Danny Bergner (‘26, O’Fallon, Mo.)- Listed at an impressive 6”4 210 lbs, this lefty utilizes his size to his advantage. Sitting in the low 80s, even deeper into games, he threw a 5 inning no hitter with 11 strikeouts. Not only did he impress with the amount of competitive strikes he threw, but the movement that he showcased on every pitch was outstanding. Being that he is only 16 years old, he has plenty of time to work out any kinks that his game may have.

Isaiah Skaggs (‘26, Lake St. Louis, Mo.)- Currently ranked as a top 10 catcher in the state, Skaggs impressed this weekend showing off his raw potential to become an elite catcher on both ends. He proved that he has the pop to have an EV of 90+ already, having great hands that compliment his lower half perfectly. The way he keeps his balance aligned, even on groundouts, was impressive. His defense was also fantastic posting a pop time in the low 2’s. 

17/18U

Drew Weir (‘25, Sioux Falls, South Dakota)- Brother of Gavin Weir, Drew possesses a similar skill set. He is currently ranked as the #2 SS in the state of South Dakota and his presence in the box has to be the biggest reason why. When I watched him hit this weekend, he was never once an easy out. He either caught a barrel early in the count, or saw 5-6 pitches each at bat. He easily had the best pitch recognition in the entire tournament, not to mention his insanely quick hands. He is also an efficient, well rounded pitcher, throwing in the semi-finals. 

Nolan Nester (‘24, Swansea, Ill.)- Currently attending SLUH High, Nolan was the surprise standout arm in the 17/18U division. He also had the best performance on the mound from this age group. Tossing 6.1 IP, 10 K’s, 4 BB, 1 ER, and a 61% strike rate. His command got better throughout the game and his velocity did not change. He sits in the low 80s with great sequencing and command. Don’t let the four walks fool you, he buckled down after and when I watched him, some of the calls were 50/50. When he missed, it was rarely by much. The one run he gave up was a great pitch high and tight, but the hitter made a great swing and sent it out. Overall, his performance proves the massive potential he has at the college level.

Andrew Bendler (‘25, Arnold, Mo.)- Bendler and Nester faced off in a fantastic pitching duel. Both had great command, both went deep into games with similar speed and control, and both let up just one earned run. Bendler had a fantastic bite to his fastball. It felt as if he mixed in a sinker and four seam to throw hitters off. There were a few times where he painted the corner so well, it was missed by the umpire. When he missed, he did not miss by much, posting a 63% strike rate with just one walk issued. He is also a strikeout pitcher, posting 8 K’s in the process. His fastball sits in the low 80s with room to push 85+.

Gavin Johnson (2029, De Pere, Wisc.) handled the bat pretty well this weekend for his CBT Wolfpack 15u team that made a run into bracket play. Johnson is a left-handed hitting first baseman with a physical 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame, showing good physicality throughout the build. It’s a clean stroke from the left side, with feel to deliver the barrel on time and drive the ball working pull-side. He has a feel to rotate well, loading deep with the hands & turning well through contact to impact the baseball out in front. Johnson tallied four hits on the weekend, including 2 doubles and a triple. He plated 3 runs as well.   Devon Hester (2029, Chicago, Ill.) had a heck of a weekend for Chicago White Sox Ace 2029 Hunt. Another week of Perfect Game baseball concluded as champions were crowned in the 15U, 16U, and 18U divisions of the Southwest Select Championship. After several days of pool play and championship bracket action, three teams rose above the competition to capture tournament titles following a week of high-level baseball. Throughout the tournament, teams from across the Southwest and beyond competed in closely contested matchups, producing standout pitching performances, timely offense, and memorable defensive plays. Tyler Osmanski (2027, Frankfort, Ill.) a 5-foot-11 160-pound right-handed pitcher worked a 7 inning complete game shutout to start off Chicago Elite’s 6-0 weekend. On top of going the distance he allowed only three base runners and one hit. Osmanski has lots of athleticism in his delivery. He keeps his body under control while still being able to have good arm action and great hip to shoulder separation. He works from the third base side of the rubber with a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball was up to 84mph multiple times and sat 80-83mph. He used two offspeed pitches, a good 12-6 breaking ball 65-68mph, and a changeup in the low 70’s.     ‘27 RHP Brett Alkire (IL) punched out everyone across his 5.2 inning masterful outing. Ranked fifth nationally entering the tournament, Florida Burn 2027 Scout left no doubt who the best team was at the 17U BCS National Championship. Burn finished a perfect 9-0 tournament, earning an 11-1 semifinal victory before defeating No. 86-ranked Original Florida Pokers 2027 National, 9-1, Tuesday afternoon at JetBlue Park. Burn seized control early and never looked back in a game that ended after the fifth inning per Perfect Game’s mercy rule. Burn carried its explosive offense into the championship game as Braedon Mackay launched a two-run home run in the first inning, giving his team an early 2-0 lead. 17u BCS Scout Notes: Day 1 Kenniel Nieves Medero (2027 SS, PR)  Nieves Medero put together another quality offensive showing, continuing the consistent production he displayed throughout the tournament.
