Weekly column: Miracle workers?

Kendall Rogers

Iowa coach Rick Heller wouldn’t call himself a miracle worker, but some around Iowa City, Iowa, these days might soon start believing otherwise.

To say Iowa hasn’t proven much on the national stage over the past 20 seasons might be quite an understatement. Iowa finished last season with a 22-27 overall record, and hasn’t reached the NCAA postseason since 1990. However, folks around the University of Iowa aren’t in the business of reflecting on what could be described as an unimpressive past.

The Hawkeyes are full speed ahead, and are beginning to garner national attention with an impressive 9-1 start to the Rick Heller era, including seven-straight wins, not to mention beginning the season with a series win over Austin Peay State, a club that though it isn’t great right now, should compete for the Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship.

Given the hand he was dealt with in the fall, Heller couldn’t be more pleased with the progressions of his team through the first three weeks of the season.

“I am pretty fired up about this group. The guys have bought in to what we’re trying to do,”  Heller said. “We’re getting our guys to believe in themselves, and we’re finding ways to win right now. We’ve got some good upperclassmen, and even again next year, we’re going to have 17 seniors.

“I guess from an outsider standpoint, you try to be as positive as you can. But we were worried with our pitching situation in the fall. We had some injuries and were pretty thin on the mound. That was the big question in the fall, and we’ve got a group of guys who have really stepped up.”
