9. PGs Venezuelan Connection Finally Signs

Los Angeles, CA - LHP Jhonathan Figueroa spent nearly a year going to Perfect Game showcases and tournaments. He and a couple other Venezuelans even moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to play in the Perfect Game Leagues and train at the PG indoor facility.

Jhonathan and O.F. Marvin Urdaneta were the first to get involved with PG after Fellow Venezuelan OF Lino Garcia signed after the PG World Showcase in 2001. Then Alfredo Fernandez joined them in Cedar Rapids.

The first to sign was Alfredo a 6’3 RHP. Fernandez has a great arm and can easily throw in the low 90s. He did lack command and needed to improve in some mental areas of the game. The Padres signed Fernandez for $500,000.

Marvin was the next to sign, with the Diamondbacks. He is a very fast outfielder with excellent raw athletic ability. He has a ways to go, but he is a very hard worker with a great attitude.

That left Jhonathan, the 6’5” 225 lb lefty. Scouts were wondering why he wouldn’t sign for a small amount and get on with his career. Our thought was, if Fernandez is worth $500,000, Jhonathan has to be worth more than a million. After all, we had seen Jhonathan throw low 90 fastballs with plus-plus life. We saw Jhonathan, at times, throw a plus breaking ball, one that left-handed hitters were not going to hit. We knew he was one of the most dedicated hard working 17 year olds we have ever seen. And there was no questioning his championship level makeup. He is as tough as they come until he steps off the field. Then he becomes the nicest, friendliest big kid on earth.

He was, in our mind, extra special, but nobody would pull the trigger and give this kid what he was worth. Then stepped in the L.A. Dodgers. After watching him throw in the PG Pacific Coast event last winter, Logan White (LA Scouting Director) signed him for $500,000. Jhonathan’s agent called us, to give us the good news and it was good news because Jhonathan needed to get out and start his career.

Our comment was “the Dodgers got a bargain”. We really meant that! They got a first round pitcher for at least 1/3 of the going rate. It’s just nobody was going to give him any more than that. “Great job by the Dodgers”, is all you can say. Now we all wait to see what happens.

Alfredo Fernandez pitched in the Pioneer league, as did Jhonathan Figueroa. Fernandez was 0-3 with a 4.91 ERA. He gave up 27 hits in 22 innings while striking out 10 and walking 8.

Jhonathan Figueroa in the same league was 2-1 with a 1.42 ERA. He gave up 16 hits in 32 innings while striking out 48 and walking 19.

He was then promoted to the Sally League, not many first year players ever see this league. In the Sally he was 5-2 with an identical 1.42 ERA. He gave up only 22 hits in over 44 innings while striking out 57 and walking 20. The stage is set and Figueroa is already one of the top minor league prospects in the Dodgers organization.

On another note Marvin Urdaneta hit .289 in Rookie Ball for the Diamond Backs. He struck out only 20 times in 149 at bats and stole 18 bases. Urdaneta ran an electronically timed 6.35 – 60 yards at a Perfect Game Showcase. Both Figueroa and Urdaneta were playing PG ball earlier this year. How things can change quickly!

Wolforth Throwing Mentorship: Article 66

The Number That Just Killed MLB Expansion: 1,217   USA Today's Bob Nightengale dropped a bomb shell recently that the baseball world is still digesting. Major League Baseball wants to expand to 32 teams. Team executives are quietly opposing it and the reason has nothing to do with cities or money.   They cannot find enough healthy pitchers.   Between 2020 and 2024, professional baseball performed 1,026 Tommy John surgeries at the minor-league level alone. Another 191 at the Major League level. More than twelve hundred elbow reconstructions in five years on the best young pitchers in the world.   That is not bad luck. That is a system reporting a verdict on itself.   For fifteen years, the youth-baseball industry has chased one number: velocity significantly more than projectability and arm care.    Recruiters scout by it.    Social...

Gavin Johnson (2029, De Pere, Wisc.) handled the bat pretty well this weekend for his CBT Wolfpack 15u team that made a run into bracket play. Johnson is a left-handed hitting first baseman with a physical 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame, showing good physicality throughout the build. It’s a clean stroke from the left side, with feel to deliver the barrel on time and drive the ball working pull-side. He has a feel to rotate well, loading deep with the hands & turning well through contact to impact the baseball out in front. Johnson tallied four hits on the weekend, including 2 doubles and a triple. He plated 3 runs as well.   Devon Hester (2029, Chicago, Ill.) had a heck of a weekend for Chicago White Sox Ace 2029 Hunt. He showed out on both sides of the ball this past weekend, really getting it done at the plate. He finished the weekend 7-for-15, with a double and 4 RBI to...

The 6-foot, 180-pound right-hander and Creighton commit paired the fastball with a low-80s slider that flashed two-plane break and a cutter that played well off the mix. Kakach worked with a loose, quick arm from a high three-quarter slot, creating quality movement across his mix while displaying...

15u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 Noah Rumley (‘29 NC) has been up to 90 so far in this start w/ 8 Ks in 4 innings of work. Really jumps out of the hand at foot strike w/ some ride to it; has also mixed in a SL w/ horizontal action. #WWBA @PG_Coastal pic.twitter.com/OcU57a3Syl — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) July 21, 2026 Noah Rumley (2029, Summerfield, N.C.) got the ball for GBC Lopez 2029 15u in their final game of pool play and dominated, going up against a tough lineup in the East Cobb Astros. The 6-foot-2 left-handed pitcher ended up going five innings, allowing only one hit and one run, while striking out nine. It’s premium stuff at the 15u level as he worked easily in the upper-80s, topping at 90 mph in the first. The breaking ball showed two-plane shape in the upper-70s as well. There’s a ton of things to like already and even...

Tyler Osmanski (2027, Frankfort, Ill.) a 5-foot-11 160-pound right-handed pitcher worked a 7 inning complete game shutout to start off Chicago Elite’s 6-0 weekend. On top of going the distance he allowed only three base runners and one hit. Osmanski has lots of athleticism in his delivery. He keeps his body under control while still being able to have good arm action and great hip to shoulder separation. He works from the third base side of the rubber with a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball was up to 84mph multiple times and sat 80-83mph. He used two offspeed pitches, a good 12-6 breaking ball 65-68mph, and a changeup in the low 70’s.     ‘27 RHP Brett Alkire (IL) punched out everyone across his 5.2 inning masterful outing. He struck out 13 batters and did it on 66% strikes. Has an active arm action and kept the ball on the corners. FB T92 early w/...

Burn finished a perfect 9-0 tournament, earning an 11-1 semifinal victory before defeating No. 86-ranked Original Florida Pokers 2027 National, 9-1, Tuesday afternoon at JetBlue Park. Burn seized control early and never looked back in a game that ended after the fifth inning per Perfect Game’s mercy rule.
