8. PG's Bruce Kimm Manages The Chicago Cubs

Chicago, IL - It’s a small world sometimes in baseball. Bruce Kimm who has been with Perfect Game since the beginning is the father of Tyson Kimm.

Tyson, has been with PG ever since he graduated from Creighton and ended his Pro career. Tyson was successfully recruited by Cubs GM Jim Hendry when Hendry was coaching Creighton.

Ben Ford who is the son of Jerry Ford (PG President) has pitched in the Big Leagues briefly for both the D’Backs and the Yankees. Ben who was coming back from Tommy John surgery was traded to the Cubs and ended up being managed by none other than Bruce Kimm in AAA.

Then midway through the year Bruce was named to replace Don Baylor and become the interim manager of the Chicago Cubs. He has since been replaced by Dusty Baker. Bruce has since signed to become the Chicago White Sox third base coach. Ben Ford has since signed with the Minnesota Twins. His brother Andy Ford who also has been with Perfect Game since the beginning played in the Cincinnati Reds organization.

Kimm played in the Big Leagues and has spent many years coaching in the majors. He has a championship ring from coaching with the Florida Marlins in 1997. He has worked for Jim Leyland, Pete Rose, and many legendary baseball minds.

That is just part of the story that relates to Perfect Game. The best part was seeing Bruce Kimm during his almost daily press conferences. He always wore his Perfect Game shirts on National Television.

Here is a story from MLB.com, about Bruce Kimm going to the White Sox.

CHICAGO -- Longtime friends Jerry Manuel and Bruce Kimm were reunited Friday when Manuel named the former Cubs interim manager the White Sox's third base coach. Manuel also appointed Rafael Santana as his first base coach, completing his staff for the 2003 season.

Kimm and Manuel have been close friends since they were minor-league teammates, and later roommates, in the Detroit Tigers organization in 1973. The two continued their working relationship in 1997 with the Florida Marlins on Jim Leyland's staff. Manuel was the Marlins bench coach and Kimm the team's bullpen coach during the club's World Series championship season.

"Anytime you win championships, you never forget the people you win them with," Manuel said Friday. "Bruce was a big part of that and we've always had a good relationship since then. And I thought it would be a good fit for us in the sense that he still aspires to be a manager and I'd like someone at third base who aspires to be a manager or has already been a manager in the big leagues or managed period."

"Jerry is somebody I'm really comfortable with," Kimm acknowledged. "I know him, he knows me, and we already have a good relationship. Basically, we can say whatever we want to each other and it's not going to affect us. ... It's really good to be with him, no doubt about that."

Kimm, 51, has spent the last 33 years as a player, manager or coach in professional baseball. He guided the Cubs to a 33-45 (.423) record over the final 78 games last season, taking over on an interim basis for Don Baylor on July 6. He was relieved of his managerial duties prior to the Cubs' last regular season game.

The opportunity to return to big leagues was Kimm's biggest reason for moving to Chicago's South Side. He replaces Wallace Johnson, who was relieved of his duties after the team's final regular season game. "I wanted to be in the Major Leagues and Jerry was the first one to approach me," Kimm explained. "I wasn't going to go back to the minor leagues. I'm excited to be with the White Sox. The one thing is that I love Chicago. The city itself is unbelievable and I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Kimm led the Iowa Cubs to a 44-45 mark in 2002, his second season at the helm of the Triple-A affiliate, before replacing Baylor. He compiled a 480-449 (.517) record in seven seasons as a minor league manager. He has also served as a third base coach for Cincinnati (1988) and San Diego (1991-92).

Manuel indicated that it was important for him to add a third base coach that had managerial qualifications.

"There are times when you, as a third base coach, can come down and say exactly what you think the manager would do or would want to hear in that particular situation," Manuel said. "I think the more you surround yourself with guys that are potential managers, the more they know about the whole versus just their part.

Kimm acknowledged he would like another shot at managing in the big leagues, but is focused on his new role with the Sox. "My attitude is what it's always been -- where I'm supposed to be is where I'll end up," he noted. "I'm at the stage in my life that whatever's in front of me that's what I'm accepting and I'll do the best I can at that job. If the opportunity (to manage) comes, sure I'd like to manage. But if it doesn't come, that's going to be all right too."

During his 12-year catching career, Kimm played four seasons in the big leagues with Detroit and on both sides of Chicago with the Cubs (1979) and White Sox (1980).

Kimm's responsibilities will also include coordinating Spring Training workouts and working with bullpen coach Art Kusnyer and the catchers.
Santana, 44, takes over for Gary Pettis, who was reassigned after the team's final regular season game. He spent the last four years as the organization's minor league infield instructor. Before joining the White Sox, he was a coach and instructor with the Royals (1992-1995) and the Red Sox (1996-1998).

Santana played eight seasons in the big leagues from 1983-1990, including time with the Cardinals, Mets, Yankees and Indians. He was the starting shortstop during the Mets' 1986 championship season.

"We have a few guys in the infield that Rafael can possibly relate to a little bit better than we have in the past," Manuel suggests. "Every now and then, they need someone they can go to that speaks their language and is in an authoritative position."

Manuel hopes the addition of Kimm and Santana will help the White Sox avoid costly baserunning blunders that plagued the team last season.

"We just didn't police that area very well period, whether it was communication or anything else," Manuel said, without offering any details. "It was just not policed very well and we have to do a better job of that."

Wolforth Throwing Mentorship: Article 66

Ron Wolforth

The Number That Just Killed MLB Expansion: 1,217   USA Today's Bob Nightengale dropped a bomb shell recently that the baseball world is still digesting. Major League Baseball wants to expand to 32 teams. Team executives are quietly opposing it and the reason has nothing to do with cities or money.   They cannot find enough healthy pitchers.   Between 2020 and 2024, professional baseball performed 1,026 Tommy John surgeries at the minor-league level alone. Another 191 at the Major League level. More than twelve hundred elbow reconstructions in five years on the best young pitchers in the world.   That is not bad luck. That is a system reporting a verdict on itself.   For fifteen years, the youth-baseball industry has chased one number: velocity significantly more than projectability and arm care.    Recruiters scout by it.    Social...

15u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 Noah Rumley (‘29 NC) has been up to 90 so far in this start w/ 8 Ks in 4 innings of work. Really jumps out of the hand at foot strike w/ some ride to it; has also mixed in a SL w/ horizontal action. #WWBA @PG_Coastal pic.twitter.com/OcU57a3Syl — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) July 21, 2026 Noah Rumley (2029, Summerfield, N.C.) got the ball for GBC Lopez 2029 15u in their final game of pool play and dominated, going up against a tough lineup in the East Cobb Astros. The 6-foot-2 left-handed pitcher ended up going five innings, allowing only one hit and one run, while striking out nine. It’s premium stuff at the 15u level as he worked easily in the upper-80s, topping at 90 mph in the first. The breaking ball showed two-plane shape in the upper-70s as well. There’s a ton of things to like already and even...

UBC Midwest X Atlantic Notes: Part 1

Blaine Peterson
Article Image
Jack Postma (2028, Barrington, IL) made an impression in Chicago this week. A 6-foot-5 right hander with a starter pitch mix. Topped out at 93 in his outing at UBC Midwest and pitched at 88-93 for 2 innings on the mound. Slider showed late horizontal bite at its best when finished out front. Change up is a usable third pitch with fading action and ability to miss bats. Clean overall operation in the delivery. Upside with added stability in the arm action. Chance to be one of the top prospects in Illinois and potentially the country with necessary adjustments moving forward.  Connor Basinski (2028, Columbia, IL) an athletic player with 2-way potential. Physicality stands out for a player in the 2028 class. Swung the bat impressively well in Chicago. Hits from a wide stance and stays balanced using strength and leverage to drive the baseball to all fields. Launched a long pull side...

15u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 Mason Conner (2029, Palestine, Texas) was a force in the middle-of-the-order for Gold Culture. The right-handed hitter starts from a medium stance with in-line feet and a low handset with a low back elbow, utilizes a negative leg lift stride. Strides through and uncoils the lower half well and creates separation in the back shoulder. Solid hand speed with a flat bat plane and feel to leverage and lift. Impacts the ball well with feel to impact and drive. The shortstop showed the power upside belting a two-run homer over the fence in left field and added a two-RBI knock later in the game. Medium 6-foot, 175-pound frame that was consistently on the barrel and showed a good approach at the plate working two walks. Lennon Dunn (2029, Mansfield, Texas) competed and showed the upside on the mound for Stix 2029 Scout. The right-handed pitcher...

Coppy's Corner: July 21 Summer Edition

John Coppolella
Article Image
The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. And, who knows, maybe somewhere out there Jessica Biel is reading it.    Player of the Week: Coen Niclai – Wareham Gatemen  The Internet tells me that 12 MLB players have come from Alaska, 10 of whom were from Anchorage, and the best of which is Curt Schilling. Niclai, who is also...

FTB National Completes Elite Run

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championships are never won in a single game. For FTB National 2027, this one has been in the making for years. An 8-0 victory over Team Elite 17U Scout capped off an unforgettable week at the 2026 Perfect Game 17U National Elite Championship, but according to those inside the dugout, the championship was a product of friendships formed long before the tournament ever began. FTB took their first national elite win in team history, giving one of the nation’s top 2027 teams an elite ending to their 17U summer. “This is a homegrown group,” head coach Will Haynie said. “This team has been together for the last four or five years, and I think a lot of them have been together since the Little League World Series when they were 12. It’s been fun, and a nice little cap off to their 17U summer, especially after winning a big event like this.” That chemistry...
