College Top 25: High on the Hoos

Consistency is always welcomed when it comes to formulating rankings.


Though some teams around the country suffered setbacks last week, most of the Perfect Game College Top 25 reaped the benefits of impressive play.


North Carolina had another successful weekend, taking two of three from Miami at home. The Tar Heels remain the nation's top-ranked team, while the top five remains the same with Vanderbilt, LSU, UCLA and Oregon State as headliners.


There were no changes in the top 12 of this week's rankings, while Arizona State dropped from No. 13 to No. 18 following a disappointing home series against Washington State, and Arkansas dropped from No. 16 to No. 22 following a tough home series loss to Mississippi.


Virginia was the big mover this week. There had been questions about the Cavaliers because of their rather weak non-conference schedule. However, they hit the road to Clemson over the weekend and captured an impressive ACC series win. With the victory, the Cavaliers vaulted from No. 22 to No. 14.


Also worth noting, Notre Dame moved from No. 17 to No. 15 after earning a solid series win over Cal Poly over the weekend, while Oregon had a successful trip down to USC and gained some ground, going from No. 19 to No. 16.


Arizona and UNLV dropped out of this week's rankings following tough series losses to Oregon State and New Mexico, respectively, while Indiana and Virginia Tech are the beneficiaries.


The Hoosiers are off to a hot start this season and have some nice wins under their belt, while despite a tough series loss to Georgia Tech two weekends ago, the Hokies responded in impressive fashion over the weekend with a road series sweep over Duke with starting pitcher Joe Mantiply returning to the rotation.

Perfect Game/Player of the Week: Tyce Armstrong, IF, Baylor Opening Day always has a special feel with the sights, sounds and smells bringing back memories of days gone by. But no one that made their way to Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark could have imagined what they would witness in the Baylor Bears first game against New Mexico State. Enter 6-4/228, redshirt senior 1B Tyce Armstrong with his power stroke and flare for the dramatic. Transferring in after a successful career at UT Arlington, the Magnolia, TX native would etch his name in the record books with an incredible day at the plate. Armstrong would hit three grand slams in the game, becoming just the second player in NCAA history to accomplish this feat in a single game. OHIO VALLEY REGION (IL, IN, KY, MI, OH) The Ohio Valley Region has a healthy amount of top-level talent, as it features five Perfect Game All-Americans in shortstop Ethan Bass, third baseman TJ McQuillan, two-way stand out Matt Ponatoski and right-handed pitchers Shawn Sullivan and Grayson Willoughby.  The 2027 class looks very strong as well, especially in Illinois. It was incredible Opening Weekend across the nation with numerous upsets, tightly contested series’ and dominating sweeps. Beyond that, there were generational individual performances, lockdown pitching appearances and record-breaking runs scored as well. It feels like we have been saying this every year for the past decade, but our game is alive and well. More and more programs are getting massive returns on their investments and the fans are turning out in record numbers to see college baseball in its Golden Era. The Mid-Atlantic Region lost its only Perfect Game All-American when catcher Andrew Costello left his Pennsylvania high school early and enrolled at Wake Forest for the spring semester.  The Region ends up being dominated by underclassmen, with seven juniors and even a pair of talented sophomores getting recognition. The story of the spring could very well be watching the young power arms in the Region come outdoors and show their talents on the mound.  Pennsylvania juniors Cole Kuhn and Trent Lutz have been getting lots of off-season attention along with New Jersey senior Alex Weingartner.
