NEBRASKA

2010 FOLLOW LIST

COMPILED by DAVID RAWNSLEY

STATE OVERVIEW
Nebraska made as much baseball news off the field as on in 2010, which can be interpreted as a mixed blessing.

The story that most impacted the national baseball landscape is the ongoing construction of a new $125 million stadium in downtown Omaha to replace the venerable, beloved and historic Rosenblatt Stadium, a city landmark located off Interstate 80 in an old, lower/middle-income area a couple miles south of the downtown district.

Rosenblatt was built in 1947 and has been home to the College World Series since 1950. It also houses the Triple-A Omaha Royals. This will be the final year for the CWS (June 19-29/30) at the old stadium, which has seen numerous renovations and upgrades in seating capacity through the years. There is sure to be much nostalgia and emotion surrounding the 61st straight national championship played there.

The stadium is scheduled to be torn down afterward to make room for an expansion of the popular Omaha Zoo, which shares the current Rosenblatt parking lot. A new stadium for the Omaha Royals AAA is being built (it is already $5 million over budget, before concrete has been poured) in semi-rural Sarpy County, about 20 miles from downtown Omaha.

The yet to-be-named future home of the College World Series has hardly been a popular project with the citizenry of Omaha, many of whom have had trouble accepting that the “need” for a new stadium was dictated by the NCAA, with the alternative being a College World Series played annually elsewhere, possibly in Indianapolis or Oklahoma City.

One team that will not play in the 2010 CWS is the state’s own University of Nebraska, which missed out altogether on the eight-team Big 12 Conference tournament for a second consecutive year, and had to sweep its final series of the season against Texas Tech just to finish at .500 overall (27-27) and avoid a second consecutive losing season. The Cornhuskers had to resort to a 13-0 mark against schools such as Nebraska-Kearney, Northern Colorado, Houston Baptist and North Dakota just to reach break-even.

The last two seasons have been a far cry from earlier in the decade for Nebraska, which caused a local frenzy when it made College World Series appearances in 2001, 2002 and 2005.

The Cornhuskers were actually an improved team in 2010, compared to the previous season, but losing righthander Mike Nesseth, the team’s top prospect, to Tommy John surgery was a crippling blow as it stretched an already young and thin pitching staff. Much of the talk about the program over the last month of the season focused on the future of head coach Mike Anderson and his staff, rather than the struggles of the team. Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne gave Anderson a vote of confidence at the end of the season, and the promise of another year.

Despite their disappointing season, the Cornhuskers should still monopolize the draft, from a state perspective, but will be challenged to produce a pick in the top 10 rounds.

Creighton, the state’s other Division I program, won the season series against Nebraska, 2 games to 1, but had only a 27-25 record overall, went 9-12 in the Missouri Valley Conference and bowed out in three games in the MVC tournament.

After much discussion and behind-the-scenes maneuvering, it was announced late in the spring that Creighton would play all its 2011 home games in the “new” Rosenblatt, which is located only a couple of blocks from Creighton’s downtown campus. The attractive new venue should aid Creighton’s ability to recruit a different caliber of athlete to the program, as coach Ed Servais has emphasized fundamentals and skills over tools in the past. Creighton made its only CWS appearance in 1991, when current Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry was the school’s coach.

The preponderance of off-the-field news even reached below the Division I level as perennial NAIA power Bellevue University was forced to forfeit 40 games for using an ineligible player most of the 2010 season. The snafu, which was caused by paperwork problems involving a transfer date, kept Bellevue, which was ranked in the top 10 most of the season, from advancing to the NAIA playoffs, and ultimately the NAIA World Series, where it has been a regular participant.

The best on-field news for Nebraska colleges came at the Division II level. Nebraska-Omaha sophomore righthander Joe Holtmeyer was selected a first-team D-II All-American after going 9-2, 2.89 and leading the nation in strikeouts, with 152 in only 87 innings. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Holtmeyer, a local product, is a legitimate prospect for the 2011 draft with a 90-93 mph fastball and an outstanding curveball (his primary strikeout pitch), although his pitching mechanics have been generalized as “unorthodox” by scouts.

Scouts had reason to come to Nebraska this spring to watch high-school baseball for a change, as Nebraska City High lefthander Logan Ehlers is a legit prospect and may be the state’s best prep prospect since Lincoln’s Alex Gordon, who went on to become the No. 2 pick in the 2005 draft after three college seasons at Nebraska.

The 6-foot-2 Ehlers, a Nebraska recruit, has two present average pitches in his fastball and curve, and his stock moved up this spring when he started using his fastball more aggressively instead of just trying to dominate overmatched hitters with his curveball. If it’s determined he is signable, Ehlers could attract fifth-sixth round attention.

IN A NUTSHELL
STRENGTH: Pitching.
WEAKNESS: High-school athletes.
OVERALL RATING (1-to-5 scale): 2.

BEST COLLEGE TEAM: Creighton.
BEST JUNIOR-COLLEGE TEAM: Western Nebraska.
BEST HIGH-SCHOOL TEAM: Papillion-LaVista South HS, Papillion.

PROSPECT ON THE RISE: Logan Ehlers, lhp, Nebraska City HS. After a slow start, following a very cold Nebraska winter, Ehlers’ fastball (88-91 mph) and pitchability improved significantly over the last month.
PROSPECT ON THE DECLINE:Sean Yost, rhp, Nebraska. A third-year sophomore, the 6-foot-7 Yost went from top-of-rotation to back-of-bullpen status this spring due to effectiveness.
WILD CARD: Mike Nesseth, rhp, Nebraska. The former mid-90s reliever had TJ surgery in April, but teams still have interest in him as a sign/rehab prospect.

BEST OUT-OF-STATE PROSPECT, Nebraska Connection: T.J. Walz, rhp, U. of Kansas (Attended high school in Omaha).
TOP 2011 PROSPECT: Joe Holtmeyer, rhp, Nebraska-Omaha.
TOP 2012 PROSPECT: Tom Lemke, rhp, Nebraska.

After capturing last year’s championship, Team Elite Scout 14U returned to Hoover looking to prove their success was no fluke. Four days later, they accomplished exactly that. Behind strong pitching, timely hitting, and the confidence that has defined the team throughout the tournament, Team Elite Scout 14U defeated SBA Bolts National 14U to claim the 2026 PG 14U National Elite Championship and secure back-to-back titles. “It’s awesome,” Team Elite Coach Blankenship said. “This is our first event of the year, so it’s good to get it to start with them, and they won it last year, so I know they are excited to do that back-to-back, so it’s pretty awesome.” The championship game showcased many of the same qualities that carried Team Elite through the tournament. Ryan Johnson delivered 4.1 scoreless innings on the mound, allowing just two hits...

Adan Rojas (2027, Streamwood, Ill.) turned in one of the more dominant pitching performances of the weekend, striking out 10 over 5 innings while consistently dictating at-bats. The fastball worked 77–80 mph, topping at 82, and he showed the ability to elevate and miss bats when needed. His slider at 67–70 mph played as a real separator pitch, generating uncomfortable swings and late decisions. Showed strong tempo on the mound and never allowed hitters to settle in rhythm. What stood out most was his ability to maintain attack mode while still showing feel for sequencing.   Cruz Jaramillo (2030, Mount Pleasant, Wisc.) brought consistent energy to the lineup all weekend and was a tough out from start to finish. Finished with 8 hits over the tournament. The swing is compact with a strong intent to impact, and he does a nice job staying on time with his stride. When he...

Hodge's swing is built around exceptional barrel lag, keeping the knob pointed toward the catcher deep into the load before snapping the barrel through the zone as the front foot lands. The result is effortless bat speed and consistent impact, with the ball jumping off the barrel. Even with the late acceleration, he stays remarkably connected throughout, allowing the bat speed...
