Scouts and college coaches at Baseball’s Biggest Scouting event

The PG World Wood Bat Championship is regarded the top scouting attraction in baseball.  There are other events that have large numbers of scouts and college recruiters, but in the end #1 each year is this tournament in Jupiter Florida held each October.  East Coast Pro, Area Codes, Perfect Game National Showcase, PG WWBA Championships in July at Marietta Georgia, Aflac All American Classic and a very few other events are among the top draws for college recruiters and major league scouts each and every year.

It is impossible to come up with an accurate total of every scout, recruiter or agent that attends the PG WWBA Fall Championship.  This is because many coaches and scouts simply walk in the gate and buy a ticket and a program, leaving no way to document who they are.  However, there are those who can be counted because they purchased a scout book, golf cart, or requested a receipt for there pass.  We also ask each scout or college coach for a business card before they can purchase the scout book.

We feel fairly certain that the grand total of scouts, recruiters and agents who attended this year’s Jupiter Tournament was in excess of 800.  As far as documenting the same group we come up with 702 who actually received receipts. About 600 of those scouts/recruiters showed up before the first games on Thursday.

Some interesting results from the documented segment of that group.

Major League Scouts

All 30 Major League Clubs were each represented.  The Atlanta Braves sent the most scouts with 18, this included all of their cross checkers and Roy Clark the Braves Scouting Director.  In all we accounted for 24 of the 30 MLB Scouting Directors being in attendance.  There could have been more that we couldn’t account for, just as there were many scouts we couldn’t account for.  The Angels, Brewers, Blue Jays, Devil Rays, Giants, Indians, Orioles, Phillies, Rangers, Yankees, and Braves had at least 10 or more scouts in Jupiter.  We can account for 293 Major League scouts at the event.  This is an average of close to 10 scouts per every Major League organization. There could have been as many as 350 or more who were actually there, but we have no way to confirm that.

The 160 or so available golf carts were sold out long before the event.  Many scouts and college coaches had to move around on foot or grab rides on the shuttle carts.
