Pitchers and Catchers Impress at the Perfect Game Indoor Showcase

PERFECT GAME USA 2004 INDOOR SHOWCASE The irony, of course, of holding an indoor showcase at the Perfect Game USA facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in late February is that it was 55 degrees and sunny outside. It’s not always that way in Iowa but it was on February 28-29 when about 50 prospects from 16 states plus Canada assembled for 2 days of work and evaluation. We joked about moving outside but the fields weren’t obviously in any sort of playable shape. It did make travel more pleasant for all the kids and their families, though. Most of the prospects were pitchers and catchers and the Indoor Showcase in fact used to be called a ā€œPitcher’s/Catcher’sā€ Showcase. If the talent level we saw during the event is any indication, there are some players who are prepped for big Spring seasons when everyone gets outside to play. Four pitchers topped out in the 91-93 mph range and eight others topped out in the 88-89 mph area. Another eleven were consistently throwing in the mid-80’s. So over 2/3’s of the 35 pitchers were at least throwing in the mid-80’s. That didn’t mean that the pitchers dominated, the hitters got in some good swings too. One pitcher who did dominate was RHP Travis Sweet, a hometown senior from Cedar Rapids who has signed with Iowa. Sweet works out at the PG facility and was an All-Tournament selection from the WWBA World Championship in Jupiter in 2003, so it wasn’t like he was an unknown. But Sweet faced 10 hitters and struck out all of them, allowing only 1 foul tip! That’s dominance. Sweet pitched in the 88-89 mph range, topped out at 92 mph and had a nasty mid-70’s curveball. The pro scouts usually let 5-10 right handers go to college but enough were in Cedar Rapids to know that they will have to account for Sweet this spring. Illinois senior RHP Gary Perinar was the hardest thrower at the event, touching 93 mph. He just keeps moving his game up every time we see him. Probably the top pro prospect among the seniors, however, was Wisconsin RHP Eric Cordier. Cordier is highly projectable at 6-3, 195 lbs, threw 91 mph consistently and once he found his release point, had a big league curveball at 78 mph. RHP Lucas Harrell (Missouri), LHP Danny Bales (Iowa), RHP Tim Radmacher (Minnesota), RHP Will Jostock (Michigan) and RHP Shaun Seibert (Illinois) led the next group of impressive senior pitching prospects. The most impressive senior position prospect was Wisconsin catcher Brandon Hall. Hall is a 6-2, 200 lb. athlete who is highly skilled with both the bat and on defense. Other impressive seniors included C/RHP Ben Geelan (Iowa), C Matt Kramer (Missouri) and C Adam Whiting (Ohio). LHP Michael Wilson, a 6-5 junior from Ontario, Canada, was the most impressive underclassman at the showcase. Wilson has a smooth effortless delivery and pitched in the mid-80’s with a good hard curveball. The 90’s are in this young man’s near future and that will get you a lot of attention if you are a 6-5 southpaw. The smaller group of underclassman had a far higher percentage of position prospects as opposed to pitchers than the seniors. SS/RHP Bobby Simmons is a sophomore from Illinois who swung the bat very well and also showed his arm strength touching 84 mph off the mound. OF/RHP Tyler Kipke (Minnesota), a junior, swung one of the best left handed bats at the event, had live athletic actions and threw 86 mph off the mound. Mickey White (Michigan) led a strong group of catchers. Reports on all the players who participated in the Indoor Showcase will appear on the Perfect Game USA website (www.perfectgame.org) within the next 2-3 weeks. TODAY’S WWBA ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE IS ……………………….. THE ABD BULLDOGS The ABD Bulldogs were established in 1993 by Mike Spiers and quickly established themselves as one of the most consistently talented programs in the country. They are based out of San Bernardino, California but have featured players from around the country, including New Mexico, Georgia, Connecticut, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Colorado and Florida If anything, the Bulldogs can claim to be one of the most ā€œinternationalā€ elite teams around. Spiers is an international scout (Mexico/South America) with the Seattle Mariners and has been the National Baseball Coach of Ecuador since 2000. Spiers’ coaching resume is one of the most impressive you’ll find anywhere. He’s coached at the high school, junior college and college levels, been a coach or delegate for 17 national Pan American Games teams and coached a USA National Junior team. Spiers has also conducted clinics in countries as varied as Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico and Italy. Part of the Bulldogs 2004 schedule already includes a trip in late July for an international tournament in Ecuador and another trip to Hawaii. The Bulldogs are also slated to have teams in at least 3 different World Wood Bat Association events during the summer in addition to a Connie Mack schedule and appearances at the Junior Olympics and the CABA World Series. Spiers has 3 primary assistants. Doug Noce, who played minor league ball with the Montreal Expos and later coached Hancock JC (California) for 4 years, is the head coach of the 18U team. Former Topps Minor League Player of the Year (1993) and Padres 40 man roster player Randy Curtis is the ABD Student Director. Tray Edmondson, a former minor leaguer with the New York Mets and now a high school coach, is the instructor. The Bulldogs list 9 separate teams on their organization website (http://www.eteamz.com/abdbaseball/): 10U Bulldogs, 11U Bulldogs, 13U Bulldogs, 14U Bulldogs, ’07 Bulldogs, ’06 Bulldogs, ’05 Bulldogs, ’04 Bulldogs and ABD Bulldogs Ecuador. Spiers involvement with the USA National Team program and Pan America Baseball has been a constant over the years and so has the number of ABD players who have played on national teams down to the 14U level. The number of ABD Alumni with international experience is obviously a point of pride with the organization and a list of players and individual tournaments that they have participated in is listed prominently on the ABD website. Current Bulldog C Landon Hernandez (’05, Cathedral City, CA), one of the top ranked catchers in the 2005 class, hit a 3run home run to lead the USA 16U National team to a 11-7 victory over Taiwan in front of 14,000 fans in the world championship final this past summer. Three ABD alumni have played in the Major Leagues: OF Reed Johnson with Toronto, OF Bobby Kielty with Minnesota and Toronto and LHP Steve Smyth with the Chicago Cubs.

Hortenbury was probably one of my personal favorites, as this was my first time seeing it in action. It’s an athletic two-way profile that has a chance to do both at the next level. But what stood out to me, was his potential on the mound. The left-handed pitcher moves very well and is comfortable there. Has the mound presence Supplemented with a free-flowing and loose arm from a higher ¾ slot, he pounded the zone in his lone appearance. He went...

Following a dominant week at the 17u PG East World Series, No. 34 ranked 643 DP Cougars 17u capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating No. 2 ranked East Cobb Astros 17u, 3-2, in the championship game to claim the title. The Cougars earned the tournament's No. 1 overall seed after outscoring opponents by an absurd 59-6 throughout the week before completing their championship run with a hard-fought victory in the finale. “Always feels great to finish the year playing your best ball, especially when going up against strong competition,” 643 Head Coach Danny Pralgo said. “We did so many of the little things right: on the mound with location, clean on defense, bunting, 2 strike approach leading to long at bats, getting hit-by-pitches, and we had so many good outs offensively that led to moving a runner or scoring a runner. And when those things all come together in...

A tightly contested battle between Canes Florida 2029 and Florida Flames 16u capped the 16U Florida Elite Championship, with the Canes earning a 6-5 walk-off win on Monday at JetBlue Park Stadium. “It means a lot to this team specifically because this is their first win as a group,” Canes head coach Alec Bettinger said. “We’ve come up short a couple times, so seeing one go through the hoop here is really nice for the boys.” The Canes defense came out hot, led by Cannon Tyler who started on the mound for the Canes. Tyler set the tone from the start, opening the game with a strikeout. He allowed no hits while striking out three over five innings. His fastball sat 77-82 mph. Another strikeout and a pickoff at second base ended the inning. Race McDaniel started on the mound for the Flames. The left-hander pitched six innings, striking out seven batters. The...
