Tuesday: “The Website: Worldwoodbat.com”

If you’re reading this, the chances are you’re already somewhat familiar with worldwoodbat.com. It’s a website that is only in its infancy as far as How it is being used, but more importantly, it’s just in its infancy as far as how the WWBA members and the people that they want to connect with are using it. Computer programmers and web designers talk in terms of “Functionality”, so let’s break down the website into its three basic “Functions”. 1. To Serve Member WWBA Teams and Players Worldwoodbat.com has been designed to act as a home web page to all member teams if they should decide to use it as such. Every member team has a page that they are required to enter their roster on for a specific tournament. That roster and specific player information is available to everyone accessing the website: parents, players, scouts, recruiters, fans, etc. Part of every player entry done by a coach should, and will, include an evaluation of the player by his coaches. This information is available to all recruiters and scouts who will be accessing the site and looking for information. Many players will also have a WWBA/PG staff evaluation listed also. This is an invaluable and unique resource for the baseball community. Let’s face it, the vast majority of the young players in this country are not talented enough to be listed among the top 10 prospects at any event. But 1000’s and 1000’s of young men go on to play different levels of college baseball every year! Before the WWBA, recruiters had two options to get information on these thousands of players: Their own eyes or word of mouth. Now there will be a third option and it will be FREE to everyone: Look up the reports on worldwoodbat.com. And when there are 500 or 1000 WWBA member teams, with 20 players plus on every roster, how many players will be listed in the WWBA Player Search Data Base? 10,000 to 20,000 players? Wow! That will happen very soon. It’s very important to note that although basic player information (name, position, team, ht/wt, b/t, written and numerical evaluation) is available on the website, personal information such as address, phone number and email address IS NOT AVAILABLE to the public. The only way a college coach, recruiter or scout can get that information is by: 1) Contacting the member club’s coach directly, or 2) being on a listed WWBA/PG approved list for such information. Personal information is never given out under any circumstances to unknown individuals. If that was all that was involved, being a WWBA member and having a Team Website would be worth it alone. But the enterprising coach can use it for so much more. There will be a scheduling function added during the off season so teams can input their schedules. Not only will those schedules be accessible for everyone (in print or web versions), results from every game on the scheduling system across the country will be listed on the front page of the WWBA website. Do you have a parent who likes keeping everyone updated with news on the team? There is a “News” section for stats, awards, game results and stories, upcoming events, fundraisers; whatever you want it to be. Pictures? Make the team website look nice, too, with pictures of the players and some action photo’s. There are other functions planned, such as access to discount prices on baseball equipment. Many teams maintain web sites already. How much do they cost per year? The WWBA site is free to all member teams. You can make of it whatever you wish, and if you have a great suggestion on how to improve it, we’ll certainly listen and act on the suggestion if possible. 2. To Serve the College Recruiting and Professional Scouting Communities In the 2003 draft, there were 90 high school players selected in the first 10 rounds. If you follow the trends in baseball you know that that number will be going down in the near future. It’s already down over 25% over the last four years. The well informed and well intentioned parent is hoping that their son will have the opportunity to play ball in college and get some of their education paid for. How many players per year will enter baseball programs at the NCAA Division I, II and III levels, plus the NAIA and the Junior College ranks? We really have no idea, but we’d bet it falls somewhere between the 10,000 and 20,000 number mentioned above in Part 1. At least. It is a priority of the WWBA and Perfect Game that no player miss out on that college opportunity because he is “unknown” to the coaches and recruiters who might otherwise be interested in him. That’s why the Player Search Data Base exists and that is why it is free, open and accessible for all college recruiters and coaches to use. It is important that all WWBA member coaches recognize the importance of entering their player information into the data base in a timely and accurate manner. It is equally important that they realize the importance of objective evaluations of their players. This function is a key and vital part of the World Wood Bat Association and should never be underestimated. 3. To Serve the World Wood Bat Association and our Events. Part of the reason for the website, of course, is to make it easier for the World Wood Bat Association and for Perfect Game USA to run quality events. Easy access to rosters and player information is just part of this. Teams will soon be able to enter events and pay for them completely on-line. Instead of making days worth of phone calls, we’ll be able to communicate basic news and information through the web site. It’s the goal of the WWBA to sponsor and run many more events than the nine we have and will run in 2003. The administrative advantages of the web site will ensure that this is possible. There are other WWBA/PG programs, such as national ID Camps, which will also function off the web site. At another level, worldwoodbat.com is just good for communications. We want to know what the member coaches, teams, players and families are thinking about the baseball world and how we can help contribute to that world. It will help us every step of the way in providing a better product for those thousands of young baseball players across the country. Gavin Johnson (2029, De Pere, Wisc.) handled the bat pretty well this weekend for his CBT Wolfpack 15u team that made a run into bracket play. Johnson is a left-handed hitting first baseman with a physical 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame, showing good physicality throughout the build. It’s a clean stroke from the left side, with feel to deliver the barrel on time and drive the ball working pull-side. He has a feel to rotate well, loading deep with the hands & turning well through contact to impact the baseball out in front. Johnson tallied four hits on the weekend, including 2 doubles and a triple. He plated 3 runs as well.   Devon Hester (2029, Chicago, Ill.) had a heck of a weekend for Chicago White Sox Ace 2029 Hunt. Another week of Perfect Game baseball concluded as champions were crowned in the 15U, 16U, and 18U divisions of the Southwest Select Championship. After several days of pool play and championship bracket action, three teams rose above the competition to capture tournament titles following a week of high-level baseball. Throughout the tournament, teams from across the Southwest and beyond competed in closely contested matchups, producing standout pitching performances, timely offense, and memorable defensive plays. Tyler Osmanski (2027, Frankfort, Ill.) a 5-foot-11 160-pound right-handed pitcher worked a 7 inning complete game shutout to start off Chicago Elite’s 6-0 weekend. On top of going the distance he allowed only three base runners and one hit. Osmanski has lots of athleticism in his delivery. He keeps his body under control while still being able to have good arm action and great hip to shoulder separation. He works from the third base side of the rubber with a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball was up to 84mph multiple times and sat 80-83mph. He used two offspeed pitches, a good 12-6 breaking ball 65-68mph, and a changeup in the low 70’s.     ‘27 RHP Brett Alkire (IL) punched out everyone across his 5.2 inning masterful outing. Ranked fifth nationally entering the tournament, Florida Burn 2027 Scout left no doubt who the best team was at the 17U BCS National Championship. Burn finished a perfect 9-0 tournament, earning an 11-1 semifinal victory before defeating No. 86-ranked Original Florida Pokers 2027 National, 9-1, Tuesday afternoon at JetBlue Park. Burn seized control early and never looked back in a game that ended after the fifth inning per Perfect Game’s mercy rule. Burn carried its explosive offense into the championship game as Braedon Mackay launched a two-run home run in the first inning, giving his team an early 2-0 lead. 17u BCS Scout Notes: Day 1 Kenniel Nieves Medero (2027 SS, PR)  Nieves Medero put together another quality offensive showing, continuing the consistent production he displayed throughout the tournament. The 8.5 PG grade shortstop features quick hands and does an excellent job creating separation with strong hip rotation, allowing him to generate easy bat speed through the zone.
