Iowa Spring League Notes: Week 1

Brooks Mitchell-Birdsell (2027, Atkins, Iowa) was solid on both sides of the ball this weekend. He was able to show a clean move working into it, with the feel to impact it out in front and drive hard through contact. He had good barrel accuracy with feel to drive the ball well, especially working pull-side. He was 4-for-8 on the weekend with a double to his credit, driving in 7 runs as well. Mitchell-Birdsell also put together a good outing on the mound, delivering 2 innings of scoreless work with 3 punchouts. He worked the low 80s with some run, flashing a mid-70s curveball with good 11-5 shape and depth. 

Maddux Mueller (2026, Amana, Iowa) LH bat with plenty to like in the batter’s box, and he put together a solid showing this weekend. He finished 2-for-3 with a double, demonstrating both contact ability and the capacity to drive the baseball for extra bases. Mueller features a smooth left-handed swing with a shorter stroke through the zone, allowing him to stay efficient and repeatable with his timing. He does a good job getting extended through contact, which helps him maintain barrel control and impact the ball consistently to the gaps. His approach stands out as well, as he works counts effectively and shows an understanding of pitch selection, looking for pitches he can handle and drive. Mueller presents a disciplined offensive profile with a blend of contact skills, approach, and developing impact that projects well moving forward.



Sam McDermott (2027, Epworth, IA) had an impressive weekend on both sides of the ball. On the mound, he worked 2 scoreless innings while allowing no hits and striking out 5, consistently attacking hitters with a FB 77–83 mph  that he commanded to both sides of the plate. He showed the ability to work ahead in counts and maintain pressure on hitters, pairing the FB with a 70–74 mph breaking ball that he used to generate swings and misses. His delivery repeated well, allowing him to stay in the zone and keep hitters off balance throughout his outing. At the plate, he added two extra-base hits over the weekend, showing a consistent ability to impact the baseball. His offensive approach features an athletic swing with strong lower-half usage.

Brady Rissman (2028, Peosta, IA) turned in a strong 4 inning outing, striking out 8 while consistently attacking hitters. He worked with a fastball in the upper 70s that he was able to command to both sides of the plate, showing confidence in landing it for strikes early in counts. The fastball played up due to his ability to locate and change eye levels, keeping hitters from settling in. He complemented the heater with a mid-60s breaking ball that he was able to land early in counts, giving him an effective secondary option. The ability to throw both pitches for strikes allowed him to stay ahead and dictate at-bats throughout the start. 

Lincoln Berding (2026, Mason City, IA) delivered a dominant 2 inning outing, striking out 5 while allowing no hits. He worked with a FB 85–89 mph that showed present life, allowing him to challenge hitters and miss bats at the top of the zone. The velocity played well as he consistently attacked the strike zone and stayed aggressive throughout his appearance. He complemented the FB with a 75-80 mph breaking ball that featured solid shape and he was able to land early in counts. That secondary pitch generated swings and misses while also helping him disrupt timing and keep hitters guessing. Throughout the appearance maintained a strike-throwing approach while mixing in quality secondaries to control at-bats and consistently produce weak contact.

Tyler Edgar (2027, Oskaloosa, IA) put together a productive weekend at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 2 walks. He showed a short, athletic swing with good rhythm and balance that allowed him to stay consistent in the box. The lower half is engaged well, helping him generate power while remaining grounded through contact. He controls the barrel effectively, allowing him to square balls up and find the gaps. His ability to get on base multiple times highlights a disciplined approach and strong plate awareness. 

Caleb Paulson (2026, Asbury, IA) showed a polished approach at the plate throughout the weekend, finishing 5-for-6 with 2 extra-base hits and 7 RBI. He uses a smooth, controlled load with advanced timing, allowing him to consistently get the foot down early and stay balanced through contact. The swing is repeatable, and he does a good job letting the barrel work through the hitting zone rather than forcing contact. He stays through the baseball well, particularly to the opposite field. His approach reflects a strong feel for the strike zone and an ability to handle a variety of pitch types and locations.

Blake Davis (2027, Keokuk, IA) went 2-for-5 on the weekend, continuing to show a consistent offensive profile at the plate. He gets the foot down early and maintains a controlled, repeatable move into contact, allowing him to stay on time and handle pitches across the zone. The swing features a clean barrel path with good balance, which helps him consistently square balls up. He shows the ability to stay on the outer half and use the opposite field effectively. His physical, strong frame supports his present tools and allows for continued strength and impact potential moving forward. Showcased his repeatable swing that translated into consistent contact throughout the weekend.

Brady Wick (2027, Riverside, IA) showed a controlled barrel through the zone with a compact, repeatable swing that allows him to consistently find the barrel. His approach reflects a good feel for using the entire field, staying balanced and on time with pitches. Contact quality remained steady, as he was able to square balls up and drive them. For the weekend, he went 3-for-6, continuing to show consistency in his at-bats. His compact frame and strong barrel accuracy translate into reliable contact and gap-to-gap production.

Danny Doyle (2027, Cedar Rapids, IA) showed well at the plate over the weekend, finishing 4-for-7 with 3 RBI. He features an athletic frame with noticeable projection and overall athleticism. Doyle handled the bat effectively, using a shorter stroke through the zone that allows for consistent barrel accuracy and contact quality. He showed the ability to impact the ball to all fields, staying balanced and controlled in his approach. His swing translates well into repeatable contact, giving him the ability to square up pitches and drive them with intent. Doyle displayed projectable tools in the box with a solid foundation to continue building on offensively.

Kinnick Brown (2026, Mason City, IA) This weekend batted .600 going 3 for 5 with 2 home runs and a double, as well as 3 walks. Standing at 6’0 215 he holds a big powerful frame that he moves well throughout his swing. Keeping the majority of that weight back before exploding into baseballs. His hands stay back as well with impressive barrel control and a clean bat path, leading him to be one of the biggest winners this weekend.

JP Elbert (2027, Dubuque, IA) This RHH looked like the most complete hitter the weekend saw. Hitting multiple extra-base hit and a home run. He has a simple swing paired with elite athleticism that gives him an advantage against opposing pitchers. His fast bat speed and ability to lift the baseball creates confidence in the box. He also shows the ability to use the entire field with strength. 

Johnny Evans (2027, Cedar Rapids, IA) was one of the more impressive arms this weekend throwing 2.1 innings and allowing 0 runs. He had 3 strike outs during this time on the mound. He sat 80-84, topping 85 mph and the slider was upwards of 75 mph. Throwing from a three-quarters arm slot and clean mechanics. Mixes pitches well and creates uncomfortable situations for hitters. Ability to fill up the zone was in full effect.

PHILADELPHIA – When the folks at Perfect Game reached out to invite him to pitch in the 2026 PG All-Star Game for rising sophomores and juniors, Cullen Scott had one request. “You mind if I get a couple of at-bats, too?” Along with his dad, Scott traveled from the family’s home in Texas to Citizens Bank Park. PHILADELPHIA – Sunday’s DICK’s Perfect Game All-American Classic was a pitching-dominated affair until the bottom of the eighth inning when the rain started to fall at Citizens Bank Park and Koa Romero stepped to the plate and did his best impression of Kyle Schwarber. Romero wears No. 12, just like Schwarber. He bats left-handed, just like Schwarber. He’s got big power, just like Schwarber. And at 5-10 and a rock-solid 225 pounds, he’s even built like Schwarber.
