High School Notebook: Feb. 18

Photo: Grady Emerson (Perfect Game)

Grady Emerson (2026, Argyle, Texas) had a strong showing throughout the opening week of high school baseball out here in Texas. Works good at-bats and is always a tough out in general. Makes all the plays at short and just has the look of a future big leaguer. He does all the little things right. Bat to ball will play at a high level and there is still a lot more power to project on here. There is a reason why Emerson is one of, if not the most highly coveted high school prospect in the 2026 class and it’s easy to see why. Currently committed to Texas, but has the potential to be a top 5 pick in the upcoming draft.

Savion Sims (2026, Carrollton, Texas) was dominant in his 3 innings of work to open up the Spring season striking out 10. He opened up 96-99 with his fastball in the first grabbing 99 four times. It’s a lively fastball that just explodes out of his hand. He would then sit 96-98 in his second inning of work and sat 93-97 in his final inning. His fastball got upwards of 2300 RPM when it was all said and done and produced 7 swings and misses. Hitters were overmatched as his fastball gets in quick. He flashed a splitter early in the 86-89 range that really tops out and dives. Also threw his slider consistently in the 84-88 range and played like a bullet. He could locate the slider well and got plenty of chases with it but could also locate it in the zone. He ended with 10 swings and misses off his slider. Sims is every bit of 6-foot-8 and uses his entire body well down the slope controlling the levers with a repeatable delivery. He has a ton of Day 1 upside going into the draft this year and should be a priority follow throughout the Spring.

Trent Vilade (2026, Frisco, Texas) really impressed off the bump to open up out of the bullpen for Prestonwood Christian in what was a hard-fought matchup. Vilade went 3 quality innings while striking out 5 batters. He worked 90-94 with his fastball topping out at 96 twice and located it to all quadrants of the zone. Works ahead with his fastball and dominates the zone. Fastball produced 5 whiffs. He mixed in a slider in the 77-80 range with more sweep to it and also flashed a curve at 74. Slider produced 4 whiffs. He showed a change as well in the 84-86 range and kills spin well and mimics arm speed. It’s 4 pitches and all for strikes. He projects well off the mound and it was good to see an uptick in velo to open up the season. Vilade is currently committed to Texas A&M.

Jaxon Knapp (2028, Grapevine, Texas) showed some intrigue off the bump for Liberty Christian against a loaded Prestonwood Christian lineup. Athletic 6-foot-1 frame and moves well down the slope. Athletic mover in general on both sides. He worked 86-88 with his fastball topping out at 89 and getting up to 2390 RPM with it. It’s a lively fastball with good arm side run and comes out easy. Would expect velo to project and tick up a good bit as he projects extremely well from a quick and loose arm. His go to secondary was the change at 77-80 and could kill spin coming out easy and mimicking arm speed. The change should continue to get better and it plays extremely well off his fastball. He also flashed a breaking ball at 77. Knapp is a 2028 and should be a big follow going into the Summer.

Zach Bliss (2026, Little Elm, Texas) was solid off the bump to open up going 3 shutout innings while striking out 6 batters against a loaded Liberty Christian lineup. The 6-foot-1 lefty worked up to 87 with his fastball and settled 83-86 throughout his outing. Fastball showed some late life to it with good tail. He mixed well and kept hitter off balance going to a slider in the 74-76 range often getting up to 2400 RPM with it showing sweeper traits. He creates funky angles with his delivery and slot which allows his velo to play up forcing late swings while tunneling his off-speed well. Bliss is currently committed to Navarro.

Joseph Contreras, RHP, Blessed Trinity

Contreras got the ball on opening night against one of the perennial powers in the state, Pope High School. There were plenty of decision makers in the upcoming MLB Draft on hand on night one of the season and around 50 scouts in general there to his first outing of the spring. Contreras opened sitting comfortably in the mid-90s, working mostly in the 95-97 range, and reached back for 98 mph once. He was ripping off sliders at 89-90 with shorter shape and some depth. The changeup is firm with good depth as it sits in the 83-85 mph range. The forkball is an absolute weapon and simply put one of the best off-speed pitches I’ve seen in my time scouting. It’s a plus pitch right now and it has firmed up some and now sits in the 79-81 range. We’ll be able to see him one more time before he heads off to the WBC to throw for Brazil and that will be at the High School Showdown. This is a first round caliber arm that has gotten off to a quick start and we can’t wait to see him in Hoover again.

Trevor Condon, OF, Etowah

Condon has been a name that’s been at or near the top of state position players for the last few months and it certainly makes sense why. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound outfielder has some of the more explosive tools in the class and supreme twitch in the left-handed swing. The feel for the barrel has always been some of the best in the state but after dumbing down the load a little bit this offseason, seems to be making even more quality contact, something that wasn’t a huge issue even before. He creates carry to all parts, is an absolute burner consistently throwing up plus-plus run times and can also project in center field long term with the amount of ground he covers. There have been a lot of eyes on Condon each time he takes the field so far this spring and he has been good throughout the first week and a half of the spring so far. He finished up his last game against Cartersville with a pair of singles in front of 10+ scouts and continues to be a name that solidifies himself in the 2026 MLB Draft.

Colin White, LHP, Harrison

White got the ball in a big matchup for Harrison against another T15 program in the state in North Paulding. Almost everyone that was at Contreras on night one of the season made the drive over to North Paulding for this matchup and White didn’t disappoint. He opened the game sitting 92-94, grabbed 95 mph a handful of times with big carry through the zone and it explodes out of the hand. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound left-hander was spinning it with confidence as well with his slider at 79-81 (~2700 RPM). He flashed a changeup in warmups in the low-80s with some arm-side depth as well. White looks every bit of the part as a prep arm and the stuff explodes out of the hand. There’s plenty of reasons to believe he has a good chance to hear his name called in the MLB Draft this upcoming July and he got his spring kicked off with a solid outing against one of the tougher lineups in the state.

Ty Tillery, RHP/MIF, Morgan County

Tillery came out firing bullets early in a matchup against McIntosh to end the first week of the season. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound two-way talent looked dominant across three innings of work, allowing only a pair of hits, and striking out five along the way. The fastball opened in the 91-93 range with heavy sink and showed the ability to command it glove-side. The slider is firm in the mid-80s but showed good depth and held fastball plane for a while. He also flashed a low-80s changeup with some arm-side depth and projects to be a usable third pitch in the arsenal. Along with showcasing the stuff on the mound, there’s plenty to like at the plate as well as he finished up with three hits including a homer to the pull-side. We think the future will be on the mound but it’s hard to ignore what he continues to do at the dish and should be a fun one to follow as the spring unfolds.

"Houston, We Nave a Problem"

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Some moments set the tone for an entire game. For Jackson Nave, it happened in his very first trip to the plate. The Sevierville, Tennessee native stepped into the batter’s box looking for a pitch he could drive. A few moments later, the ball was flying over the fence, giving FTB Phillies 13U an early boost and igniting what would become a dominant offensive performance. “I was feeling good,” Nave said. “I was just trying to find a pitch I could hammer. I kept my eye on it, took it down the middle and that felt good.” That swing was only the beginning. Nave finished the game with a home run, four runs scored, and four RBI as FTB Phillies 13U rolled to a 27-4 victory on the opening day of the 2026 PG 13U National Elite Championship. For Nave, getting the offense started early is an important part of helping his team succeed. “I think it is really...

For many young players, competing alongside some of the top talent in the country can be intimidating. For Chris Reed, it is simply another opportunity to prove he belongs. The Conyers, Georgia native has established himself as one of the premier players in the 2030 class, currently ranking No. 24 nationally and No. 7 among shortstops according to Perfect Game. Reed’s game has consistently stood out against elite competition thanks to his athleticism, instincts, and all-around skill set. ‘29 SS Chase Hallett (NJ) drops the bat head on this one & lifts it out to the PS for a solo HR. Free and easy LH swing w/ present strength & more to dream on. #BeastOfTheEast @PGMidAtlantic pic.twitter.com/Ym9LFg05tx — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) June 4, 2026 Chase Hallett (2029, Pennington, N.J.) came up with a loud swing on Thursday morning, dropping the barrel on one and lifting it out to the pull-side. It’s an intriguing profile overall with the young left-handed hitting middle infielder and the power projects in a big way. The swing is short and simple, he finds the barrel at a high clip, and is a sure handed defender up the middle. This has all the makings of a high-end prospect in a few years and is certainly a name of note in the ‘29 class. Canon Day (2028, Germantown, Tenn.) put together a great day on the offensive side of things,...
