Nash Embraces All Things Perfect Game

CARTER NASH EMBRACES ALL THINGS PG

By Jim Salisbury

COLUMBUS, Ohio – It’s cold outside. The wind is whipping. Is that sleet? Ugh.

Think spring. Think baseball.

Carter Nash surely is.

Nash looked right at home during a visit to the American Baseball Coaches Association annual convention last month. Outside, the weather was frightful. Inside, it was baseball season. Nash lit up radar guns with his smile as he made his way through the convention hall and the event’s bustling trade show. He checked out all the new equipment, all the cutting-edge technologies and even met a few former major leaguers.

“It’s like a baseball heaven to me right now,” the wide-eyed 15-year-old said.

Nash is one of the bright young talents of Perfect Game. You’ll be hearing a lot about him in the coming years, if you haven’t already. He’s played in PG’s 11U, 12U, 13U and 14U Select Festivals. He’s a gifted hitter, runner and outfielder.

And the personality …

We’re talking top of the scale.

Nash didn’t just roam around the trade show at the ABCA convention. He grabbed a microphone and conducted interviews with the PG media team. One minute, he was chatting with the folks from Mine Baseball. Another, he was hanging with Brooke, the popular social media influencer behind @BrookeKnowsBall. He was so at ease, so natural behind a microphone and in front of a camera that you couldn’t help but think he might one day have a future hosting Good Morning America. After his ball-playing days, of course.

Eventually, Nash dropped in on Mo Vaughn, the 1995 American League MVP who was there representing his own Vaughn Sports Academy and conducting interviews with the likes of Don Mattingly and Harold Reynolds for his MVP Podcast.

“What an impressive kid,” Vaughn said after a 15-minute sit down with the strapping, 5-11, 195-pound youngster.

PG CEO Rob Ponger agreed with Vaughn’s scouting report.

“Last year, our scouts brought Carter to our attention,” Ponger said. “They were like, ‘You’ve got to meet this kid.’ He’s got a great personality. He’s a great athlete. He’s smart. He has a ton of talent. But more than the talent, there’s a natural charisma. On top of it all, he’s a hell of a baseball player and a good kid, raised right. We’re very proud of him.

“He loves the PG environment. He’s so happy to be part of PG and now we’re propping him up and he’s going to become a personality. Hopefully one day he gets drafted or goes to play in college and gets some NIL money and -- listen, we want him to have PG memories that last a lifetime. The kid is a star. He’s a star at 15. He’s a personality at 15. I love to see kids take advantage of the PG platform and he’s doing it so well.”

Nash played varsity football at Dorman High School in Roebuck, South Carolina as a freshman last fall. A second-string running back, he scored seven touchdowns. More certainly will be in his future.

But baseball is his first love. Always has been. He started swinging a bat at 3. “No tee-ball, right off a machine,” he said with a laugh. He hit his first home run at a PG tournament in North Carolina when he was 10. He still has the ball. And many other home run balls, as well.

Nash loves the PG scene, loves traveling to tournaments, loves testing himself against top competition.

“Last year, I was in Florida, California, Texas, all over,” he said. “It’ll be the same thing this summer. It’s great.”

He recalled meeting Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., at the Hank Aaron Invitational last summer in Florida and how Griffey offered insights on the showdown between the hitter and pitcher.

“He talked about the mental side of it, how you have to live pitch to pitch and beat the pitcher in a one-on-one battle,” Nash said.

Nash played on Dorman’s varsity baseball team as an eighth grader last year. He will remember Griffey’s advice as he returns to the varsity team for his freshman season this spring.

He will also be strengthened by some of the wisdom Vaughn passed along during their chat at the ABCA convention a few weeks ago.

“Mo talked about situational hitting, know the inning, know the score, know the pitcher, who’s on base,” Nash said. “Understand the situation and capitalize on it. He talked about learning from your tough days, how he went 0 for 15 in the playoffs one year but bounced back.”

True enough. Vaughn went hitless in 15 at-bats for Boston in the 1995 American League Division Series. The next time he played in the postseason, he hit .412 (7 for 17) with two doubles and two homers.

Turns out Nash and Vaughn had previously met each other. A couple of years ago, Nash hit two homers against a team Vaughn coached at a tournament at East Cobb in Georgia. Vaughn, at first, did not remember the meeting but did when Nash produced a picture of the two taken after the game.

“That was you?!” Vaughn said with a big smile.

Vaughn capped his chat with Nash by urging the young player to develop good work habits, avoid distractions and get proper rest.

And one more thing:

Be a good listener.

That doesn’t appear to be a problem for Nash. He uses the word “sponge” frequently. He was a sponge learning from older players on the football field last fall, a sponge listening to Griffey last summer, and a sponge listening to Vaughn on a cold winter day in January. He promised to be a sponge as the weather warms and the new baseball season gets underway very soon.

Carter Nash has many miles to go in a baseball journey that he hopes will one day lead to the place that Vaughn and Griffey reached. Armed with talent, smarts, a glowing personality and many good friends at Perfect Game, he’s on a good path.

Wolforth Throwing Mentorship: Article 66

The Number That Just Killed MLB Expansion: 1,217   USA Today's Bob Nightengale dropped a bomb shell recently that the baseball world is still digesting. Major League Baseball wants to expand to 32 teams. Team executives are quietly opposing it and the reason has nothing to do with cities or money.   They cannot find enough healthy pitchers.   Between 2020 and 2024, professional baseball performed 1,026 Tommy John surgeries at the minor-league level alone. Another 191 at the Major League level. More than twelve hundred elbow reconstructions in five years on the best young pitchers in the world.   That is not bad luck. That is a system reporting a verdict on itself.   For fifteen years, the youth-baseball industry has chased one number: velocity significantly more than projectability and arm care.    Recruiters scout by it.    Social...

‘28 OF/LHP Carson Tabler (OH) Rips one deep into the pull side gap for an inside-the-park HR. Athletic in the box w/ a projectable frame. Utilizes a toe tap on a fluid stroke w/ good bat speed. Good runner in stride + efficient around the bases. #MineWS @Carson_T7 @PFFlyers2028 pic.twitter.com/IVfICPg4qV — Perfect Game Ohio Valley (@PG_OhioValley) July 10, 2026 Carson Tabler (2028, Cincinnati, Ohio) Tabler was probably the most pleasant surprise when it comes to names from this weekend. A rather unknown for me and my staff going into the event, Tabler managed to cement himself by event’s end. It’s a true two-way projection at this stage, while he has the size in the 6-foot-3 long and loose frame, the strength will continue to add on to the 175-pound stature. While he only had two extra-base hits (triple, home run), the bat-to-ball skills were the calling card, and...

Will Dembo
Article Image
After an action-packed week at the 16u WWBA Championships, the tournament came down to two of the nation’s top teams battling for one of travel baseball’s most prestigious titles. No. 5 ranked SBA Bolts National faced No. 60 Alpha Prime 2028 after both teams reached the championship undefeated, but the SBA Bolts were the sole team to exit without a loss, defeating Alpha Prime 10-2 in mercy rule fashion and capture the national title behind dominant pitching and explosive offensive performances. The SBA Bolts were perfect throughout their week, running the table and going 11-0 while outscoring their opponents by an impressive margin of 108-25. “It was awesome,” SBA Head Coach Travis Thompson said on the mercy rule victory. “It just kind of culminated our week. It's been a long week. I can't even remember our first game, which felt like three weeks ago. The...

Ridge Whitfield (2029, Charlotte, NC) stands at 6-foot, 158 pounds with an athletic build that should allow him to maintain his mobility and quick-twitch actions as he continues to develop. He bats and throws left-handed. Whitfield locates his fastball to both sides of the plate, mixes his pitches effectively, and keeps hitters off balance. He competes on every pitch and doesn’t back down in big situations. Whitfield threw 5.1 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, and no walks while striking out three on 75 pitches (58% strikes). He attacked the zone with a fastball that sat 73 mph and topped out at 78 mph, mixing in a 67 mph breaking ball and a 68-70 mph changeup to keep hitters off balance. Sam Jobe (2029, Charlotte, NC) stands at 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, with a lean, athletic frame and plenty of projection. He bats and throws right-handed. Jobe shows good feel for the...

14u BCS Scout Note Recap

Jake Karpell (2030, Holmdel, NJ) got on the barrel a couple times in game five and totaled three rbis. Started his production with a single then later on hammered a heater down the right field and flew around the bases for a three run inside the park home run. Keeps the hands inside at contact really well and got the head around on the homer. Runs well and can hit it around the yard in the approach.  Luke Sauer (2030 C, FL)  put his hit tool on display with a well-struck double, continuing to show why he is regarded as one of the top catchers in the class. Owns a big frame with present physicality and does a good job keeping the hands connected throughout the swing. The barrel works efficiently through the zone and there is a solid offensive foundation present. Currently ranked as the No. 66 catcher nationally.  Gavin Politz (2030 OF, FL) continued a strong tournament...

Connor Ashley (‘29, FL) has struck out six over six no hit innings thus far. Got the FB up to 87 w/ feel for a sharp two-plane slider. #PGWS @Florida_PG pic.twitter.com/M7mEmTH8pk — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) July 12, 2026 Connor Ashley (’29, Minneola, FL) was stellar on Sunday, striking out seven in a seven inning no hitter. He operates from a medium-to-large right-handed frame with length, room to fill, and lower half strength. Ashley works exclusively from the stretch, starting at the belt before working into a higher compact leg lift, firing down the mound via a long arm action. He releases from a high three-quarters slot, with the fastball jumping from the hand up to 87. Ashley mixed in a sharp 11-5 breaking ball with depth and late bite, a true swing-and-miss offering.  Matthew Hernandez (’29, Miami Lakes, FL) has posted strong numbers on both...

Coppy's Corner: July 14 Summer Edition

John Coppolella
Article Image
The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. And, who knows, maybe somewhere out there Jessica Biel is reading it.    Player of the Week: Carter White – Falmouth Commodores  Talk about making a great first impression! White introduced himself in a very loud and boisterous way this past week by going 9-17 (.529 AVG) with 6 RBI...
