Down on the Farm: NL West

It’s the time of the year again (i.e. the off-season) for the annual PG Down on the Farm feature.  We identify a top prospect in each of the 30 Major League organizations with as much Perfect Game background as possible and delve into that PG history for some insight into his development as a prospect.  Some of them might be high profile, high draft pick, ex-PG All-American talents who fans have been long familiar with.  Others might be more obscure prospects who have significantly improved either in college or as professionals.  Note that players who have used up their rookie eligibility are not considered.

The idea isn’t to necessarily pick the best PG background prospect in each organization but the one who might be closest to the big leagues.  Sometimes that is the same player, other times not.



And there is plenty of variation among organizations in their quantity and quality of prospects, whether it be those with PG backgrounds or not.

Arizona Diamondbacks --  LHP Philip Abner
High School:  Charlotte Christian HS (Charlotte, NC)

This slot probably should belong to Arizona’s 2023 first round pick Tommy Troy but their crowded and talented middle infield situation might be putting that off for another year.  This opens the slot for a sleeper big league candidate on the Diamondbacks’ top prospect lists despite making his big league debut in 2025.

Abner was a well-known prospect early in his high school career as a big and strong two-way athlete who was old for his high school class.  He was in the upper 80’s in his freshman year and always performed well at major events in the summer and fall while participating in the major showcases each summer.  He went to the 2020 PG National Showcase and was a candidate for the 2020 PG All-American Classic but fell just short.  His report from that post-lockdown event in Hoover, Alabama read:

Big and strong build, pretty mature physically. Loads onto his backside well in his mechanics and uses his strong lower half well in his delivery, strides closed out front but clears his hips well, high 3/4's arm slot creates plenty of angle. Fastball topped out at 93 mph, did a nice job of throwing strikes with his fastball and working ahead in counts. Slider has nice bite and power when he stays on top of it, flashed a firm change up. Two-way potential at the next level, has a strong left-handed bat with pull side power potential. Good student, verbal commitment to Florida.

Athletic and strong left handers who throw strikes up to 93-94 mph are still prospects and Abner ended his high school days ranked 67th overall in the 2021 class with a scholarship to Florida.

Abner struggled as a situational reliever out of the Gators bullpen as a freshman, posting a 8.06 ERA in 26 appearances with 21 walks in 22 innings, but threw much better in 28 innings in the Cape Cod League that summer and was much improved as a sophomore in the same role.  Abner resurrected his prospect status as a draft eligible sophomore, going 3-0, 3.16 with 3 saves in 31 innings, with 51 strikeouts and much improved raw stuff and confidence from his freshman year.

As noted above, left handers who throw strikes and throw hard have value and Arizona recognized that, picking Abner in the sixth round in the 2023 draft and signing him for a $300,000 bonus.  He’s thus far the only Arizona pick from that draft who has made his big league debut his profile is a good bet to stay there for some time.

2025 Summary
Abner cruised through three minor league levels, going 3-2, 3.07 with 7 saves and striking out 70 hitters in 58 innings while allowing only 13 unintentional walks.  That earned him a big league call-up in mid-September, where he got into five games over the last two weeks of the season.

2026 Perspective
His 2025 season, his spot on the 40-man roster and ability to throw strikes from the left side will make him a candidate for a bullpen position for the Diamondbacks.

2025 Update: Multiple injuries in 2025 (right shoulder, lower back) limited Del Castillo to 28 minor league games and 44 big league games, most of those as a designated hitter.

Los Angeles Dodgers  --  LHP Jackson Ferris
High School:  IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.)

Highest 2025 Level:  AA
2026 Age:  22

Ferris grew up in Mount Airy, North Carolina but transferred to IMG Academy in Florida for his junior and senior seasons and was part of the national powerhouse IMG teams that included other standouts such as the Nationals James Woods and 2022 first round pick Elijah Green.  IMG played a loaded national schedule those two years and Ferris was always their lead starter in the big games and went a combined 16-0, 0.77 in 105 innings with 189 strikeouts over those two seasons.

Ferris was also arguably the most dominant pitcher on the Perfect Game circuit from 2019 to 2021, putting up consistently dominant performances at major events and never seeming to have a bad outing or even a bad inning.  His formula was pretty simple, fill up the strike zone with 94-96 mph fastballs that simply over powered high school age hitters.  Ferris’ report from the 2021 PG National Showcase read:

Outstanding pitcher's build with a long and loose upper half and a strong lower half. High 3/4's to over the top arm slot with some upper body lean, repeats his mechanics very well on his fastball. Outstanding fastball, very consistent 94-96 mph with big downhill angle and late life, gets his velocity easily and that makes it deceptive, dominated some of the best hitters in the country with his fastball. Still tweaking the consistency in release and slot for his curveball and change up but they flash quality. Pitches with confidence and is under control. Good student, verbal commitment to Mississippi. Named to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Ferris’ build and projection, dominant fastball, command, flawless health history and performance record were all big plusses coming into the 2022 draft but there was still lots of worry about his secondary pitches and especially his ability to spin the ball.  Perfect Game liked him the most it seemed and had him ranked ninth overall in the final 2022 class rankings and as the top ranked high school left-hander.  Ferris ended up dropping to 47th overall in the second round, however, where the Cubs picked and signed him for a $3,005,000 bonus.

After a strong professional debut in Low A in 2023 (2-3, 3.38 in 56 innings with 35 hits allowed and 77 strikeouts), Ferris was traded with prospect outfielder Zyhir Hope to the Dodgers for Michael Busch and Yency Almonte.  He ended up going 5-7, 3.20 in 27 starts between High A and AA in 2024 with 145 strikeouts and only 93 hits allowed and was named the Dodgers 2024 Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

2025 Summary

Ferris had a very solid 2025 season, making 24 starts and throwing 126 innings in AA as a 21-year old while going 10-7, 3.86 with 135 strikeouts in those 126 innings.  Most importantly perhaps in the injury ravaged Dodgers system, he stayed healthy the entire season, as he has throughout his three-year professional career.

2026 Perspective

One area that Ferris must continue to refine is his command, as he’s consistently walked 4.5 per 9 IP as a pro, including 66 hitters in 2025.  His raw stuff can be dominant enough to get away with some wildness, however, and he’s been compared to Blake Snell as a complete package at the same age.

2024 Featured PG Player:  SS Alex Freeland

2025 Update:  Freeland continued to hit in the minor leagues (.263-16-82/.834, 83 BB’s) and in 25 big league starts at second and third base (.190-2-6/.601), and he played well defensively.

Colorado Rockies  --  OF Charlie Condon

After Condon put up one of the greatest college seasons ever in 2024, winning the Dick Howser Award after hitting .433-37-78/1.565 OPS as a red-shirt sophomore at Georgia, much was made of his “being a walk-on redshirt at Georgia as a freshman” as if he was an unknown player in high school.

First, it is virtually impossible to be an unknown player in the Atlanta area, which is one of the top hotbeds for baseball talent in the country.  More importantly, Condon was very well known and undoubtedly recruited accordingly.  He just wanted to go to Georgia and that was his path.

Condon attended The Walker School, a well-known school in Marietta close to the East Cobb Complex.  He finished his high school career as the leading all-time home run hitter in Georgia high school history and was a three-year starter at quarterback for The Walker School as well.  Condon played extensively at PG tournaments and it .389-6-12 in 2021 and .386-6-34 in 2020 on the way to finishing his high school career ranked 400th nationally in the 2021 class and 33rd overall in Georgia.

Georgia undoubtedly know they had something special from the start even while Condon was red-shirting and that was confirmed when he went to the Northwoods Summer League in 2022 after no game action for a year and hit .286-7-68/.830 in 61 games.  Condon then hit .386-25-67 in 2023 as a freshman to put himself firmly on the draft map for 2024.

The top of the 2024 draft class was very heavy with college players but featured no obvious number one pick.  Scouts weren’t convinced that Condon would stay at third base or be able to play left field but the other top of the draft position candidates (Travis Bazzana, Nick Kurtz, Jac Caglianone, JJ Wetherholt, Christian Moore) had areas to nitpick, too.  Condon ended up going third overall to the Rockies and signing for $9,250,000, tying right-hander Chase Burns (Reds) for the largest bonus of the draft.

2025 Summary

Condon hit .268-14-58/.820 OPS in 99 games, mostly between High A and AA, with his power gradually increasing after his promotion to AA.  He followed that up by hitting .337-3-13 in 22 games in the AFL.  About 80% of his innings in the first were spent at first base defensively.

2026 Perspective
Condon hasn’t hit with the prodigious power he showed at Georgia as a professional and getting to that power more consistently should be a big reason for Condon’s 2026 season to take off into MLB regular playing time.

San Diego Padres  --   LHP Jagger Haynes
High School:  West Columbia HS (Cerro Gordo, NC)

Haynes grew up and attended high school in a small town in South Central North Carolina with a listed population of 131 people.  Perhaps not coincidently, West Columbia High School is located about 10 miles from Whiteville, NC, home of MacKenzie Gore, who the Padres drafted with the third pick in the 2017 draft.  The Padres area scout for the Carolinas during both drafts was Nick Brannon.

When Haynes was picked in the fifth round in 2020 he was one of the surprise high school players selected.  In addition, at a then 17 years, 8 months, he was also the youngest player to sign in the 2020 draft.

Haynes threw at 10 WWBA tournaments with the Canes organization during his high school days, including four in 2019 prior to his senior season.  He worked mostly in the mid to upper-80’s and topped out at 90 mph for the only time at the 2019 WWBA World Championships.  He also showed good feel and spin on a mid-70’s breaking ball.

Haynes had a strong junior season in 2019, going 4-1, 2.35 with 73 strike outs in 38 innings for West Columbia.  He was only able to make one start prior to the pandemic shutting down spring high school baseball in 2020, throwing 6 no-hit innings and striking out 13 hitters.  Unconfirmed scouting reports have Haynes pitching in the low 90’s and topping out at 93-94 mph during that start and when he worked out for teams prior to the draft.

With a commitment to North Carolina, the spring season being canceled and the draft being limited to five rounds in 2020, it certainly looked probable that Haynes was going to school.  That fifth round turned out to be one of the most unique in draft history and it has already produced 12 big leaguers with many more getting close.  Haynes ended up signing for $300,000.

Unfortunately, Haynes injured his elbow in the spring of 2021 and eventually underwent TJ surgery, costing him both the 2021 and 2022 seasons and limited him to 25 innings in 2023.  The Padres farm system is very thin in almost all areas but strongest in left-handed pitching, as in addition to Haynes they used their last two first round picks to select high school southpaws Kruz Schoolcraft and Kash Mayfield.

2025 Summary

Haynes made 25 starts in AA in 2025, going 3-4, 4.11 in 103 innings with 101 strikeouts and only 83 hits allowed but also 62 walks.  His raw stuff continued to make strides, working mostly at 92-94 mph and touching higher, so the ability is there if he can learn to work more often in the strike zone.

2026 Perspective

Haynes is joined by the Padres 2024 and 2025 first round picks, Kash Mayfield and Kruz Schoolcraft, to give the team a trio of talented young left-handers that are the highlight of their very thin farm system.  It’s very clear what Haynes needs to do in 2026; improve his command, to continue his journey from small-town North Carolina and missing two years with elbow problems.

San Francisco Giants  --  OF Dakota Jordan

Jordan is part of what has become an incredible line of athletes to come out of Jackson Academy in Canton, Mississippi.  The 2021 Perfect Game All-American has been joined just in the past few seasons by 2025 PG All-American Kevin Roberts Jr. and the Pirates Konnor Griffin, arguably the top prospect in baseball at this moment.

Like those two, Jordan was a multi-sport star in high school and was considered a three-star prospect as a wide receiver, despite his 6-0/215 running back build, and caught 48 passes for 877 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior. 

Jordan’s senior year at Jackson Academy likely cemented his future as a baseball player, even though he was committed to Mississippi State as a two-way athlete.  He was named Mr. Baseball in Mississippi after hitting .524-16-57.  Despite his big senior season and his high-profile tools, Jordan didn’t have lots of draft buzz leaving high school and was ranked 69th in the final PG 2022 class rankings.  As an older high school senior (19.2 at draft time), scouts also knew that Jordan would be sophomore eligible and would perhaps clear up his two-sport status quickly in college.

Jordan adapted very quickly to college baseball, hitting .307-10-40 as a freshman and .354-20-72/1.129 OPS as a sophomore, although he did strike out 84 times in 63 games.  He got rave reviews from scouts about his raw bat speed but the concern about his swing and miss tendencies and his leverage as a sophomore muddled his draft stock with many teams.

Still, lasting until the fourth round and the 116th overall pick was a major surprise.   Jordan got paid as a much higher pick, signing for a $1,997,500 bonus, almost twice as large as any other fourth round bonus in 2024.

2025 Summary

Jordan missed significant time with oblique injuries which likely cost him a chance to make his AA debut but nonetheless had a very successful first full season, hitting .311-14-82/.875 in 88 games in High A while stealing 27 bases and significantly cutting down his swing/miss from college.   He played exclusively in center field on defense after playing left field as a college freshman and right field as a college sophomore.

2026 Perspective

With Bryce Eldridge expected to graduate to the big leagues, the Giants are thin in established top prospects and are looking at a number of promising young players who spent 2025 in A ball to step up in 2026.  As the most physically talented of the group, Jordan is the one who is most likely to step up at AA this year.

2025 Update:  Eldridge played all year at 20-years old and continued to show his offensive potential, hitting .260-25-84/.843 in 102 minor league games, mostly in AAA, before a mid-September MLB debut.

The “In the Spirit of the Game” dinner and auction brought in thousands of dollars, all of which will go toward providing deserving youngsters an opportunity to play and grow in the game. Chet Brewer was not at the event – the former Negro Leagues star died at age 83 in 1990 – but his spirit was. Another week of JUCO baseball and another week full of wins for No. 1 ranked Johnson County . The Cavaliers have won 18 games in a row and have swept through the Jayhawk Conference to this point, setting a new school home run record along the way. Walters State returns to the top 5 this week on the strength of a 12-game winning streak. Both McLennan and Pearl River are coming off of undefeated weeks and look like strong top 10 caliber teams, while Midland (now 30-3) continues to climb in the rankings for the third consecutive week. For the first time all year this ranking will feature 4 California schools as Palomar joins Ohlone, Fresno City and Santa Ana in the JUCO rankings. Another pair of weeks has gone by this high school season and with that we have another High School Top-50 Update. Southern states are within a few weeks of the end of the season while some northern states are just getting started this week. Through the end of the spring, we will be bringing you updates to the Top-50 along with state rankings updates coming soon. For the first time in 2026, we have a new #1 in the country as Orange Lutheran (CA) takes over the top spot after winning the NHSI. Venice (FL) came in second place at the NHSI after a thrilling game against Orange Lutheran and comes in at #2. Midseason Awards  Perfect Game Midseason Player of the Year:  Landon Hairston, OF, Arizona State  The season sophomore outfielder Landon Hairston is putting together is generational, even amongst the Hall of Fame talent Arizona State has fielded over the years.  Hairston, the 5-11/195 sophomore outfielder from Queen City, AZ has his club on track for another postseason appearance and they will make plenty of noise in the Big 12 regular season.  To put things in perspective on Hairston’s season, he is currently 5th in the nation in batting average, 3rd in hits, 8th in hits per game, tied for 2nd in home runs, tied for 5th in runs scored and is 4th in runs batted in so far.  He holds a batting average of .469 while slugging 1.027 and reaching base over half the time with an OBP of .551.  Hairston walks more than he strikes out and has 12 doubles, 17...

Roman Keister (2030, Dade City, FL) Could not miss the barrel this weekend tallying 6 hits including 2 triples and 4 RBI. Starts the load early and controls his body well, the up the middle approach really plays in game. Also worked from off the mound for an inning and picked up a punch out.  Colton Russo (2030, Coral Springs, FL) Showed off the power burning outfielders all weekend. 5 hits including two triples that carried over the CF and RF heads. Has a good understanding about using the lower half in the swing and the bat to ball skills really impressed.  Karson Blakney (2030, St. Augustine, FL) Made his impact in a big way this week, collecting the win in the quarterfinals. March 31st Perfect Game/Co-Players of the Week:  Landon Hairston, OF, Arizona State  The Arizona State Sun Devils (20-8) went (3-2) last week and now sit at No. 18 in our latest Top 25 poll.  They are proving that they are legitimate Big 12 contenders and Landon Hairston is making a strong case for National Player of the Year at the halfway point in the season.  The 5-11/195 sophomore outfielder from Queen City, AZ is putting up such loud numbers that they are almost hard to fathom.  In five games last week, the lefthanded hitter collected 12-hits in 19 Abs, scoring 13 runs on 6 walks, a double, 5 home runs and he drove in 11 runs on his own.  For the season, he has put together a slash line of .468/.991/.553 with 12 doubles, 15 round trippers, 45 RBIs, a 12:18 strikeout-to-walk ratio and he has swiped 8 bags so far.  It has been a special year for the...

Well college baseball fans, we are officially at the half-way point of the 2026 season and what an incredible ride it has already been.  While there is some separation at the top as we start to look at programs that could be potential NCAA tournament hosts, things continue to change as clubs revitalize their seasons by winning massive series in league play.  The Top 25 seems to be getting more volatile as we reach the midway point, and the second half is setting up to be something special.  The one thing that will remain the same as it has for a month now, is that the UCLA (25-2) will still be the No. 1 team in the nation.  The Bruins are winners of 19-consecutive games and have started off Big Ten league play by sweeping 4-straight series.  The Texas Longhorns (23-4) hold tight at No. 2 this week after sweeping previous No. 11 Oklahoma (19-8) and sit atop the...

Hudson December (2027, Woodland Hills, Calif.) showed flashes of his upside despite a somewhat uneven three-inning outing. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound right-hander struck out three while working through a couple of tough jams, though his command was inconsistent at times. He ran his fastball up to 87 mph on a pair of occasions and generally sat in the 83–85 range. He mixed in an upper-70s slider with varying shape and execution where it was most effective when thrown with proper intent, showing shorter, tighter depth. He also flashed a changeup against a few left-handed hitters. Mechanically, there’s a blend of positives and areas for development. He incorporates his lower half fairly well and moves down the mound with some pace and intent.
