A Winning Partnership

JUPITER, Florida – Officially, it’s called the Perfect Game World Wood Bat Association World Championship.

Over time, it’s become known by just one word.



Jupiter.

That's all that's needed.

“When you say Jupiter, the baseball world knows that this is the hot spot, the place where the premier amateur baseball tournament in the world is taking place,” said George Linley, executive director of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.

“Baseball players, baseball enthusiasts, scouts, coaches -- they all understand this is the top of the food chain.”

The WWBA World Championship is PG’s largest and longest running tournament. For a quarter century, it has called Jupiter home. This year, the annual October event drew 120 teams to the Roger Dean Complex, the bustling spring training home of the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins. 

Those 120 teams were loaded with talented, elite-level high school players. And where there’s talent, there will be college coaches and major league scouts. The Roger Dean Complex features 12 fields and a stadium. Games are played from early morning into the evening. College coaches and scouts dart around from field to field in golf carts as they watch and evaluate players.

The armada of golf carts has become one of the signature features of Jupiter. In fact, PG had a T-shirt made with a scout sitting in a golf cart holding a radar gun for this year’s event. It sold out on the second day.

“Everybody in the industry knows Jupiter as Jupiter,” said Taylor McCollough, PG’s vice president of operations. “It’s really the perfect venue for us. Very few spring-training complexes have a dozen fields and are big enough to accommodate all the scouts, college and pro, and the golf carts. There’s no other event like this with all the scouts driving around from field to field. 

“Early on, only a (major league) team’s scouting director would get a golf cart. Then all of a sudden, there were 100, then 200. Now, there are over 300 golf carts here. This is the final big event of the year. The next time scouts see these players, they will be playing their senior seasons with their high school teams. A lot of players make their name out of this event. It’s a chance to get more exposure before the (MLB) draft.”

For the second year in a row, CBA Marucci won the five-day tournament. They weren’t the only champions. The grounds crew at the Roger Dean Complex did outstanding work getting the fields ready after rainstorms the first two days.

“They’re one of the best, if not the best, grounds crew we deal with,” McCollough said. “Rain can be an issue at this time of year in Florida but we can always count on these guys to get the fields back playable. We had six inches of rain Thursday night and were playing at 9:30 Friday morning. It still amazes us.”

In addition to the big one, the WWBA World Championship, Palm Beach County hosted two other PG events in October, including the Freshman WWBA Championship, which drew 82 teams. It was played at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches, spring training home of the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals. That stunning facility, with 12 fields and a stadium, opened in 2017. According to Linley, Jupiter's year-round popularity as a venue for youth travel ball tournaments helped convince Palm Beach County to support the construction of CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches. Throughout the course of the year, PG hosts 15 events for various age groups in Palm Beach County. That's a lot of action.

“The impact is enormous for our community,” Linley said. “It’s hard to even put on paper. Just in October, when we look at what’s happening in Jupiter at the Worlds, the biggest showcase in amateur baseball by far with 120 teams, then think about what's happening at Cacti. We’re projecting about 250 teams, 5,000 athletes, attending family members, baseball enthusiasts, scouts. That’s 15,000 plus visitors staying four or five days in hotels and eating at restaurants. The economic impact is absolutely enormous. You’re probably looking at anywhere between $10 million to $12 million in visitor spending and economic impact just this month from youth baseball.”

With two state-of-the-art spring training complexes that hum with activity long after the big-league teams break camp, Palm Beach County considers itself the epicenter of Florida baseball.

“We’re one of the dominant players in the nation when it comes to baseball overall, and we lead the state of Florida in amateur baseball showcases, tournaments and events overall,” Linley said. “One of the reasons we lead is because Perfect Game has planted their flag in our backyard and has made us one of their signature homes.

“Outside of PG, we also host a variety of other baseball tournaments, but PG is the leader. They are the leader of the amateur sports baseball world. They set the tone. They set trends. We’re very blessed and happy that we have this incredible partnership. We’ve enjoyed it for a long time and hope to enjoy it for years to come.”

After an action-packed week at the 16u WWBA Championships, the tournament came down to two of the nation’s top teams battling for one of travel baseball’s most prestigious titles. No. 5 ranked SBA Bolts National faced No. 60 Alpha Prime 2028 after both teams reached the championship undefeated, but the SBA Bolts were the sole team to exit without a loss, defeating Alpha Prime 10-2 in mercy rule fashion and capture the national title behind dominant pitching and explosive offensive performances. Ridge Whitfield (2029, Charlotte, NC) stands at 6-foot, 158 pounds with an athletic build that should allow him to maintain his mobility and quick-twitch actions as he continues to develop. He bats and throws left-handed. Whitfield locates his fastball to both sides of the plate, mixes his pitches effectively, and keeps hitters off balance. He competes on every pitch and doesn’t back down in big situations. Whitfield threw 5.1 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, and no walks while striking out three on 75 pitches (58% strikes). He attacked the zone with a fastball that sat 73 mph and topped out at 78 mph, mixing in a 67 mph breaking ball and a 68-70 mph changeup to keep hitters off balance. Jake Karpell (2030, Holmdel, NJ) got on the barrel a couple times in game five and totaled three rbis. Started his production with a single then later on hammered a heater down the right field and flew around the bases for a three run inside the park home run. Keeps the hands inside at contact really well and got the head around on the homer. Runs well and can hit it around the yard in the approach.  Luke Sauer (2030 C, FL)  put his hit tool on display with a well-struck double, continuing to show why he is regarded as one of the top catchers in the class. Owns a big frame with present physicality and does a good job keeping the hands connected throughout the swing. The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. After a week of competitive baseball, the ZT Select Prospects have been crowned the 14U WWBA National Champions, completing an impressive tournament run with a championship victory over Swarm Red Elite National 2030 with a final score of 3-1. The 14U division brought together 19 talented teams for a week of high-level competition, with players from California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Hawaii, and Pennsylvania battling for the opportunity to compete on one of the biggest stages in youth baseball.
