Frame/Setup

Carlson has an extremely twitchy & athletic build with a lot to like in the 6-foot-1 frame that really projects well. He’s lean throughout with quick-twitch actions, and they show on the dirt. There’s strength throughout and it'll continue to come with maturity with a pro organization at the next level or if he were to end up on campus with the Vols’. Carlson swings it from the right side with a spread base, high hands with some coil to it. He uses an inward toe tap trigger to get on time and creates plenty of separation in the swing, delivering the barrel with good intent & bat speed. He’s produced 100+ mph EVs in BP & mid- to upper-90 mph EVs in-game as well. There's a feel to launch and an ability to impact all over the field. It’s a loose, low-tension stroke with athletic traits that show throughout the swing. Carlson’s a top-tier athlete with high-end qualities to like on both sides of the ball.

Tools

Carlson’s got plenty to like in the toolshed & it shows with him being a pretty sure-fire first-round pick early on in the cycle, with a chance to sneak into the top half of the first round. He’s a double-plus athlete who’s shown out defensively on the circuit for years. The actions speak for themself when Carlson gets to work, showing good bounce on the infield dirt. He moves well laterally with some twitch and feel for the angles. He’s going to be able to stick at shortstop at the next level with serious arm strength with throws that carry across the infield with ease. Carlson threw 99 mph across the diamond at PG National this past summer. He’s a plus-runner as well, which shows on the dirt and on the base paths. He’s a 6.68 60-yard dash runner & there’s speed to extend plays and take the extra-90 feet where/when he can.

At the plate, it’s a good operation that has performed on the circuit well, showing plenty of bat-to-ball with bat speed and impact that consistently played in game. He can work to all fields and there’s some juice to work all over. He’s had some loud backside swings in the past on the circuit & the jump off the barrel has been on display for years. The defense is polished & he shows a feel for the game, with high baseball-IQ. There’s plenty that draws attention on both sides of the ball, and beyond that, he’s been up to 96 mph on the fastball with a hammer. While the future is on the dirt, he’s done it on the mound as well.

“The Buzz”

Carlson’s 2024 performance on the circuit is what has really made some noise. He showed out at PG National and was selected to the PG All-American Classic, showing off all of the tools this past summer. On the PG circuit alone, Carlson slashed .412/.580/.853 with a handful of extra-base hits while walking 13 times, with just 10 punchouts this past season, not to mention boasting just a 1.17 ERA over 18.0 innings on the mound. As things get moving with Corona’s season, expect big things out of Carlson who will continue to make noise, especially with teammate Seth Hernandez on the roster as well.

Summation

Carlson’s a top-of-the-class defender on the dirt whose traits will translate well to the next level. He’s an elite athlete and possesses traits that are going to have pro organizations ready to pull the trigger come draft day. The hit and power tools have plenty to like with tons to like in terms of bat-to-ball. There’s juice here and the impacts can be real loud. He’s got plenty of tools with traits that have Carlson likely to be a Top-15 pick this summer and this spring could only help continue to cement his role near the top half of the draft. The long-term value is there; the question will be on how high he could move during this year’s draft.

2026 MLB Draft: Roster Challenge

With the 2026 MLB Draft complete, our own draft team put together a fun exercise. Using a snake style draft format, we each had to build a roster using players selected in the 2026 MLB Draft. There was one catch. Each team could select only one player from each of the first 10 rounds, plus one player from Rounds 11-20. 16u World Series Scout Notes: Days 1-2 Lucas Sullivan (2027, Winder, GA) absolutely shoved in the first round of the playoffs. He racked up a total of 13 strikeouts across his seven inning, complete game shutout performance. Sullivan worked three pitches for strikes with lots of comfort and only allowed two hits. Ran the fastball up to 86 and he got lots of swing and miss on the 11-5 curveball. Mixes speeds well and was electric to watch. Landon King (2028, San Mateo, CA) was just one of the best players on the field the first two rounds of the playoffs. Totaled four hits, two of those were for extra bases and scored three times.
