Tech Partners Help Keep PG on Cutting Edge

“Amazing,” Tewksbary marveled.



The swing that produced 714 home runs is not only amazing to Tewksbary’s eye, but also to the technology that springs from the app on his phone. Pelotero is the name of the company. Tewksbary co-founded it five years ago along with former major leaguer Chris Colabello. Pelotero is the Spanish word for ballplayer. The app is helping young hitters improve their swings with high-tech video analysis that produces instant feedback and personalized improvement plans.

Pelotero is an official partner of Perfect Game. So is Yakkertech, a ball-flight tracking and measurement system that is also providing instant analysis to young players, spins and breaks for pitchers, exit velocities for hitters. Yakkertech is an arm of Magnus Sports. Yakker is an old-timey name for a curveball. Ball flight … movement. You get it.

“PG is known as a tournament and scouting company, but we’re committed to providing best-in-class technology to benefit a player’s health, development and recruiting,” said Jered Goodwin, PG’s vice president of scouting operations. “Both of these companies are best-in-class at what they do.”

Yakkertech is used at many PG Tournaments.

Pelotero is used at all PG Showcases and Prospect Getaways.

Both companies were well represented at the American Baseball Coaches Association annual convention earlier this month. Their respective booths buzzed with activity, from Q&As with coaches and other baseball personnel to demonstrations.

“Last year, we captured every hitter at a PG showcase,” Tewskbary said during the convention. “It’s a big deal because, in a lot of ways, PG is the straw that stirs the drink. There’s so many players that come through this model and what we want most is to help players.”

Tewksbary described how easy it is to use Pelotero. 

“Take a video with your phone and upload it to the system,” he said. “We build a 3-D model of what your bat is doing. The bat is a tool and this is learning how to use the tool optimally.” 

Video can be taken during games, practice sessions or showcases. It can be taken while doing tee work in the garage.

Pelotero’s technology analyzes all aspects of the swing -- bat speed, bat path, swing plane, direction, length, extension. Everything. From the data, a hitter-potential score and a personalized improvement plan is generated and returned to the player.

“If your swing plane is your biggest flaw, we give you drills to work on,” Tewksbary said. “If your direction is your biggest flaw, we give you drills to work on. We capture and process the data, then the player has to do the drills and put the time in. Every time you upload a video, it gets refreshed so you can see if you’re improving or not.”

After completing a showcase, players can find their Pelotero video analysis and their hitter-potential score on their PG player profile.

At Yakkertech, it’s also about helping players improve through data and real-time feedback.

“It’s not about old school or new school,” said former major leaguer Jonny Gomes, Yakkertech’s director of strategic partnerships. “It’s about, ‘Are you up to date?’ 

“Being able to put the data in these young players’ hands is really weaponizing them. They’re getting instant feedback when they see the numbers. And it’s not just miles per hour. That is like tenth on the list of what’s going on. Horizontal movement, vertical movement, your spin, your tilt, your release point, all those numbers that really matter, and all those numbers that you’re getting judged on to just play at the next level. We’re not trying to get a 12-year-old to the big leagues. We’re trying to help a 12-year-old be a better 13-year-old player, a 14-year-old be a better 15-year-old player, and so on.”

The technology explosion in the youth game also has other important benefits. It can help college coaches in their recruiting decisions.

“These are not just development tools that we’ve partnered with,” PG’s Goodwin said. “They’re recruiting tools, as well. A player can upload a PDF of a great performance and send it to a college.”

Gomes pointed out that Yakkertech’s biggest contribution to the game could one day be injury prevention in pitchers.

“Data is going to be the answer for injury prevention and that’s what I’m excited about,” he said. “How do we limit Tommy John surgery? The book is not written yet, but to write that book you’re going to need data. I think getting the data will save a lot of careers.”

Yakkertech CEO Brian Victorero values the company’s partnership with PG “because they’re the biggest and best amateur sports company in the world. More baseball players go through Perfect Game’s gates than anywhere else.” Victorero added that young players can benefit from the assistance of ball-flight technology as much as the pros.

“Not everyone is Nolan Ryan,” he said. “We want to help train a generation of players to be the next Greg Maddux. How do I control the ball in a way that allows me to play a game of chess and not checkers?”
