All-State Games Youth Week 1 Recap

National All-State Select Championship Notebook 

The third rendition of the National All-Select Championships kicked off with the 10,12 & 14U Age Groups descending on Houston, TX this past weekend. Their 9U,11U and 13U brethren will close out the event that saw forty-two states, along with both Puerto Rico and Mexico represented amongst the players. With an abundance of talent in attendance, there were tons of exciting moments and well-played games across the board. All three age groups were hotly contested with tons of action, as players repped their region with pride and exuberance.  

Tennessee Takes Home 10U Crown 

Tennessee, which was making its first appearance at the National All-State Select Championships battled their way through a gauntlet of talented regions before ultimately taking home the title in a memorable matchup with Southern California. Eventual MVP Jaxon Spray walked to leadoff the game before Weston Duke got the scoring going for Tennessee with a long double to centerfield. Duncan Mount would follow with a double of his own to put the boys from the Volunteer State up by two early. Mount would come around for their third run after a couple wild pitches to subsequently score. Southern California and the boys from Tennessee would trade runs during the second and third innings, with the score sitting at 4-2 headed into the fourth. Tennessee would respond with a four spot to ultimately put away the game and stake claim to an 8-2 victory over an extremely talented Southern California squad. James Brandt and Sebastian Cartaya held a tough SoCal lineup at-bat for the entirety of the game, as they allowed just two runs (one earned) in six innings of play. Knox White joined teammate Jaxon Spray by taking home MV-Pitcher honors.

Carolina CROWNED  

In a battle of two absolutely loaded squads, Team Carolina took down South Texas in a relatively low-scoring affair that showcased some of the top talent in the 12U Age Group. Both teams came into the championship tilt undefeated, as they navigated through pool play unscathed. The matchup featured nine 2023 11U Perfect Select Festival alumni including eventual MVP Walker McCrory. McCrory was simple on-fire for the entirety of the event, as he hit .692 across his seven games played. He collected nine hits, had six extra base hits and drove in an astounding fourteen runs. MV-Pitcher Calvin Madenspacher got the starting nod on the bump for the boys from the Carolina’s and was simply unhittable through three innings, as the young left-hander struck out the first nine hitters he faced. Quite the accomplishment considering the South Texas lineup was littered with an abundance of Select Festival participants. Leadoff man Raylen Hunter got things started in the bottom of the first, as the speed catalyst atop the lineup continued to impress with a double. He would later come to score on McCrory’s single. Carolina would extend the lead to two with a single run in the bottom of the third before South Texas answered and knotted the game at two in the top of the fourth. The boys in blue would respond in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs themselves, setting the stage for an outstanding final two innings.  

McCrory relieved Madenspacher, who finished with ten punch outs in three-and-two thirds innings of work and showed his two-way ability by promptly setting down the powerful South Texas lineup in order. Malachi Bullock would set Carolina down in order in the bottom of the fifth to give his team a shot in their last at-bats. Cade Chapman would single with one out in the Top of the Sixth to breathe life into the South Texas crowd. Aiden “Ace” Gonzalez furthered that feeling with a double to left field, setting up an absolutely exciting moment that would provide the outcome of the game. 2023 Perfect Game Select Festival participant Kaden Canady would step to the plate and drive a line drive that pushed right-fielder Calvin Madenspacher a few steps back. The aforementioned MV-Pitcher would secure the fly ball and unleash an absolute frozen rope to home for a game ending double play, giving Team Carolina the 4-2 victory.
