1. BELLAIRE ( Texas ) HS 34-4-1
With seven returning starters from a regional semifinal squad last year, the Cardinals are primed to win their eighth 5-A state championship. Five seniors with commitments to Division I college programs, plus returning conference player of the year Toller Boardman , are back and this might be Bellaire's best team in years. Putting runs on the board should not be a problem. RHP/IF Kyle Chaskin (.459-3-25; 6-1) and 3B Kirby Taylor (.456-8-55) are Texas A&M recruits, while SS Alex Silver (.463-8-55) is committed to Texas . C Daniel Gerow is headed for Davidson and OF Sean Washington (.424, 22 SB) for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. On the mound, the Cardinals return Boardman, a promising junior lefthander who has already committed to Texas . Righthander Blake Denman , a San Jacinto ( Texas ) JC recruit, and Chaskin will provide depth on the mound. Few teams can match the talent and depth of this year's Bellaire squad and the Cardinals should be a serious contender for a national championship.
2. THE WOODLANDS ( Texas ) HS (19-10)
It's all about pitching for the Highlanders, and there might not be a high school team in the country that has more talented arms. The headliner of the group is RHP Jameson Taillon , the consensus top prep prospect in the country. Taillon (8-1, 1.50, 56 IP/95 SO), a Rice recruit, has a legitimate chance to be the first high-school righthander ever to be taken first overall in the draft. Texas Christian-bound RHP Nick Frey gives The Woodlands a second potent arm at the front of the rotation, while RHP Bryan Brickhouse and LHP Ryan Bielitz are both highly-regarded juniors. Offensively, Texas A&M-bound 3B Spencer Davis and senior C Anthony Azar will be counted on heavily.
3. FARRAGUT HS, Knoxville , Tenn. (39-5)
One of the top programs in the country over the last decade, Farragut won its fifth state 3-A championship in the last seven years in 2009. Despite losing several seniors to Division I programs, the Admirals are loaded with talent. Junior 1B Nick Delmonico (.465-12-57) and junior LHP Philip Pfeifer (12-2, 1.53, 77 IP/138 SO) were all-state selections in 2009 and rank among the top prospects nationally in the 2011 draft class. RHP Nick Williams (6-0, 0.82, 42 IP) and C Ethan Bennett (.360-11-39), both Tennessee recruits, give the Admirals more high-end talent to make a run at another state championship. The Admirals will be without head coach Tommy Pharr, who had coached the team for 12 years. He has taken a position at a local private school.
4. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS HS, Miami (24-9)
The Explorers were the Florida 6-A runner-up in 2009, and may have the deepest roster in the country with 10 players committed to Division I programs. The entire infield is headed the D-I route, and got an added boost when SS Jesse Pintado , a Florida International recruit, transferred in from South Miami High. Most of the other regulars return, but the pitching staff may be the strongest area of the team. Florida International-bound RHP Andres Perez-Lobo and Miami-bound RHP Javier Salas , who had nine saves a year ago as the closer, are solid at the front of the rotation, and will be joined by junior LHP Andy Suarez , a Southwest Miami High transfer and possibly the best prospect on the team. After a 4-3 loss to Tampa ’s Alonso High in last year’s state final, anything less than a championship this season will be viewed as a disappointment for the Explores.
5. JESUIT HS, Tampa (26-3)
Entering the state 5-A playoffs last year, the Tigers were favored to win a state championship. But they were upset in the regional semifinals by H.B. Plant High, a local rival. Despite losing four seniors to the Division I ranks, this year's team looks to take care of some unfinished business. It is loaded with five more Division I recruits, as well as the nation's top-ranked sophomore in SS/RHP Lance McCullers (.443-5-28), son of the ex-big leaguer. Despite throwing only seven innings last year, McCullers was clocked up to 94 mph last fall and should be much more of a factor on the mound in 2010. The Tigers pitching staff could be outstanding as it also returns its top three arms from 2009: LHP Daniel Gibson (9-2, 2.08, 67 IP), a Florida recruit; LHP Willi Martin (10-1, 2.28, 63 IP), a Liberty recruit; and senior RHP Matt Ina (5-0, 2.47, 28 IP). Offensively, McCullers will get support from OF Alex Bacon (.354), a North Florida recruit; OF Chris Pagliarulo (.385), a Boston College recruit; and IF Chris Reinhart , a Notre Dame recruit.
6. BISHOP GORMAN HS, Las Vegas , Nev. (40-4)
After earning a No. 1 national ranking in 2009 and finishing as the consensus No. 2 team in the country a year earlier, expectations have become very high for this Las Vegas power. The Gaels suffered heavy personnel losses with the departure of Jeff Malm (.454-17-69; 11-1, 1.50), Joey Rickard (.545-7-62; 8-2, 1.97) and Stephen Manthei (11-1, 1.55), who won 30 games among them. But there is still plenty of talent left. The Gaels are obviously going to need some pitchers to step up, but their offense should again be one of the best in the country. As a team, Bishop Gorman hit .462 last year. Arizona recruit Johnny Field (.518-14-67), an outfielder, is the top returning player, while junior C Eric Van Meetren (.496-12-64), senior C Neil Lawhorn (.513-2-47) and sophomore 3B-RHP Joey Gallo (.402-6-31), one of the nation’s top 2012 prospects, are all expected to have big years again. There is little reason why the Gaels shouldn't win their fifth consecutive state championship in 2010.
7. SUMRALL ( Miss. ) HS (36-0)
The 2009 season was one for the ages for the Bobcats as they went undefeated en route to their second consecutive 3-A state championship. Senior 3B/RHP Jackson Posey (.505-10-60; 3-0, 2.77) leads a potent offense that returns several key contributors, including Mississippi State-bound SS Chase Lewallen (.435-5-39), along with junior OF Austin Carter (.468-3-43), junior IF Barron Conner (.349-5-36), senior OF Chad Guice (.365-4-41) and junior C Austin Knight (.342-1-20). On the mound, sophomore Luke Lowery (10-0, 2.28, 70 IP) is the top returning starter, but Posey and Lewallen (4-0, 0.51, 2 SV) should also play significant secondary roles.
8. THE PENDLETON SCHOOL / IMG ACADEMY , Bradenton , Fla. (30-1)
Despite not being part of the traditional high-school structure in Florida , the Panthers arguably had the most talented team in the state last year and will be loaded again in 2010. Gone is first-team All-American C J.R. Murphy (.627-11-66), who signed with the New York Yankees, but the Panthers have six seniors who have committed to Division I colleges. The pitching staff should be dominant as RHPs Casey Mulholland (6-0, 1.39; 40 IP/73 SO), a Mississippi recruit; and Jimmy O'Neil (8-0, 2.40; 50 IP/63 SO), a Stetson recruit, will be joined by RHP Blake Perry , a Kentucky recruit who has transferred in for his senior year. The Warriors’ offense will led by UC Irvine shortstop-recruit Dillon Moyer (.398-2-17, 15 SB). Two other D-I recruits will lend support in the batting order.
9. WALSH JESUIT HS, Cuyahoga Falls , Ohio (29-4)
Walsh Jesuit was the Ohio Division II runner-up in 2009 and will be seeking its fifth state championship this year. With five seniors committed to Division I colleges, the Warriors look like the strongest team in the northern part of the country this year. Virginia-bound RHP Tyler Skulina (9-0, 0.75; 56 IP/84 SO) and Ohio State-bound RHP Greg Greve (7-1, 1.74, 48 IP/60 SO; .409-4-31) give the Warriors a very talented duo at the front of their rotation. Offensively, Greve is joined by Dayton-bound 1B Ryan Berry (.375-6-25), Kansas State-bound 3B Johnny Fasola (.392-7-25) and OF Marco Caponi (.333-0-18).
10. POWAY ( Calif. ) HS (28-7)
The Titans won the CIF Division I San Diego section championship last year. With most of their key contributors back, big things are expected again. 3B Josh Anderson (.479-7-38), a San Diego State recruit, and San Diego-bound SS Connor Joe (.423-5-25) are two of the top offensive players in the San Diego prep ranks, while IF Dillon Dooney (.393-4-33), and OFs Trevor Lipe (.347-6-28) and Brett Thomas (.378-1-16) are other returning seniors. Two more San Diego State recruits, senior RHP Keegan Yuhl (12-1, 2.51, 75 IP) and junior RHP Chad Smith (3-1, 2 SV, 16 IP), are expected to lead the pitching staff.
11. FAIRHOPE ( Ala. ) HS (32-12)
With the return of 1B/RHP Daryl Norris , the reigning 6-A state player of the year, as well as several other key contributors from last year's team, Fairhope looks like the cream of the crop in Alabama this season. Norris (.487-13-50) and SS Garrett Pitts (.405-8-42) are both committed to Mississippi State and lead an offense that hit .348 last year. Junior C/RHP Evan East (.352-6-35; 4-1-1, 2.52) was an all-state selection last year, while sophomore OF Jordan Ebert (.368-5-40) and junior IF Wes Kent (.328-3-32) also had big years. Norris (8-3, 1.25, 61 IP/90 SO) and junior RHP Peyton Fuller (6-0, 2.32, 51 IP) will form a solid 1-2 punch at the top of the Pirates’ rotation.
12. CRESPI HS, Encino , Calif. (21-11)
The Celts captured the CIF Division II Southern section championship last year, and this year’s team could be even better as many top players return. Senior 1B/RHP Ryon Healy (.469-3-24; 11-0, 1.81; 81 IP) is one of the nation’s top two-way players and the headliner on this year’s squad. He has committed to Oregon , as has Scott Heineman, one of two junior righthanders who should make an impact. John Kearns (4-2, 1.80, 54 IP) is the other noteworthy arm. Several other seniors that are expected to make big contributions include UCLA-bound OF Kevin Williams (.312-2-24), UC Irvine-bound SS Austin Walker (.312) and OF Josh Mason (.349-4-30).
13. BARBE HS, Lake Charles , La. (31-6)
Possibly the nation’s longest-running, most-successful prep program, Barbe has been nationally-ranked in 15 of the last 16 years and won five state championships since 1998 under head coach Glenn Cecchini. The Buccaneers fell short a year ago, losing in the state semifinals to eventual 5-A champion Northshore High, but appear primed for a deep run this season. Cecchini’s son Garin (.402-6-33), a senior, is the team’s top player and possibly the top high-school prospect in Louisiana . A Louisiana State recruit, he stole 53 bases in 55 attempts last year. Two seniors, Kevin Berard (.330-3-26, 22 SB) and Hommy Rosado (.326-2-11), will be counted on to have big years, while a host of talented underclassmen are likely to step up. On the mound, the Bucs feature junior RHP Sam Smith (6-0, 2.35, 2 SV, 56 IP) and sophomore RHP Taylor Butler (5-1, 2.27, 24 IP).
14. ALONSO HS, Tampa , Fla. (30-3)
The defending 6-A Florida state champion is primed for a repeat with several key contributors returning, although the team Alonso beat in the final, Miami ’s Christopher Columbus, is ranked No. 4. Pitching will be a strong point again for the Ravens, who had a team ERA of 1.92 last year. LHP Thomas Dorminy (8-0, 1.31, 48 IP/81 SO), a South Florida recruit, is the key returnee, but there are plenty of other key contributors back. Junior RHP Jose Fernandez (5-1, 2.44, 28 IP/43 SO) was the winning pitcher in the state championship game and struck out 18 batters in another contest last year. While he did not see a great deal of action last year as a junior, LHP Brandon Johnson has committed to Florida State and should play a much more significant role in 2010. Offensively, Tyler Ding (.476-2-26, 24 SB), Dorminy (.403-4-25) and Tito Martinez (.385, 22 SB) are the top returning seniors, while junior Matt Brandy (.385) also returns.
15. ORANGE LUTHERAN HS, Orange , Calif. (18-11)
Two years ago, the Lancers had one of the nation’s best teams with the likes of New York Yankees first-round draft pick Gerrit Cole and several other talented players. But this year’s team might be even better. Pitching should again be a strong point as the Lancers return their top three arms from last year. LHP Bobby Wheatley (7-3, 1.40, 70 IP, 43 H), a Southern California recruit, and RHP Andrew Thurman (5-7, 2.95, 57 IP), a UC Irvine recruit, give the Lancers a solid 1-2 punch at the front of the rotation, while sophomore LHP Art Vidrio (3-0, 0.53, 26 IP, 15 H) provides them another quality arm. Offensively, UNLV-bound IF Dillon Bryant (.326-1-18) and sophomore OF Andre Real (.289) will be counted on.
16. WANDO HS, Mt. Pleasant, S.C. (28-4)
The South Carolina 4-A runner-up in 2009, Wando returns most of its key contributors from last year’s team and looks primed for another state championship run. The Warriors have benefited greatly through the years from their association with the Diamond Devils, an elite travel team from the area. The 2009 version of the Diamond Devils featured several top players from Wando High, notably Georgia-bound RHP Drew Cisco . One of the top high-school arms in the country, Cisco is 20-6, 1.61 in his three years at Wando. He joins with Winthrop-bound Reid Langdale to form a formidable 1-2 pitching punch. Cisco (.395-2-20) and Langdale (.375) play on both sides of the ball, and are joined by senior 1B Brad Cherry (.326) and senior OF Robbie Dodds (.316).
17. ARDREY KELL HS, Charlotte , N.C. (27-8)
The defending 4-A state champions will be heavy favorites to repeat, despite losing ace lefthander Alex Wood (10-2, 0.87), who is now at Georgia . The Knights have six returning players who have committed to play at the college level. RHP Ryan Butler , a Marshall recruit who has gone 12-2, 1.84 the last two years, is the top returning arm, but Georgetown recruit Alex Baker and Francis Marion (S.C.) recruit Ashton Lover (6-2, 2.23), both righthanders, give the Knights quality pitching depth. Defensively, Kell has one of the best double-play combinations in the country in SS Jack Reinheimer (.337), an East Carolina recruit, and junior 2B Logan Ratledge (.383), a North Carolina State recruit. Senior OF Cody Shelton (.333) has committed to Wingate.
18. EDISON HS, Huntington Beach , Calif. (23-6)
Edison was the runner-up to traditional California power Capistrano Valley High in the CIF Southern section Division I finals a year ago. Senior 3B Kyle Jones (.370-1-16) and senior C Josh Lesinski (.345-5-29) are among the best veteran talent that returns, but the Chargers will need other players to step up, particularly on the mound. Fortunately, the team has three of the best juniors in the state in SS Christian Lopes (.453-15-33), a significant transfer from Valencia High, LHP Henry Owens (9-1, 0.98, 71 IP) and OF Eric Snyder (.354-3-17).
19. MARTIN HS, Arlington , Texas (25-9)
The Warriors look like the top team in the Dallas metroplex this year after being knocked off by eventual 5-A state champion Socorro High last year. They have a nice blend of pitching and hitting, but four seniors with commitments to Division I programs should be the strength of the team. Stanford-bound OF/RHP Brian Ragira (.408-5-36) is one of the nation’s top two-way players and potentially an early-round draft pick, while Texas-Arlington-bound IF Ryan Walker hit .513 as a junior to break the school record previously held by former big leaguer Ben Grieve. On the mound, the Warriors will be very strong as Texas Christian recruit Tony Rizzotti (8-1, 0.74, 65 IP) and Dallas Baptist recruit Tyler Wilhelm (8-2, 2.68, 51 IP), both righthanders, are at the front of the rotation, while Ragira is also very capable on the mound.
20. COLLEGE PARK HS, The Woodlands, Texas (28-7)
While chief rival The Woodlands High garners more national attention, it was actually College Park that won the district last year. Rice-bound RHP John Simms (9-2, 1.19, 88 IP/128 SO) was the Houston area pitcher of the year last year and led the Cavaliers to the regional finals. Offensively, College Park is led by a trio of senior outfielders who earned all-district honors last year in Rice-bound Keenan Cook (.393), Michael Aquino and Jay Young . (5-1, 2.27, 24 IP).
21. NORTHSHORE HS, Slidell , La. (34-2)
With several key players returning from Louisiana ’s defending 5-A state championship team, expectations will be very high for the Panthers. Leading the charge will be SS/RHP Ryan Eades (.369-6-53), a Louisiana State recruit who lost part of 2009 due to an arm injury. He will be expected to carry the team on the mound and in the field. Offensively, the Panthers will have to replace C Chad Fortenberry (.535-16-38), but senior OF Taylor Eads (.490-3-40), senior 3B Chase Compton (.361-6-35), a Louisiana-Lafayette recruit, and junior Breck Kline (.324-5-37), a Southern Mississippi recruit, had strong 2009 campaigns. Eades (5-0, 0.92, 30 IP/48 SO) will be joined on the mound by Compton (6-0, 3.16, 31 IP), Kline (2-0-3, 2.55) and sophomore LHP Shane McKinley (3-0-1, 2.62).
22. PENSACOLA CATHOLIC HS, Pensacola , Fla. (27-5)
After being eliminated in the Florida 3-A quarterfinals last year by The Bolles School, the eventual state champion, the Crusaders have the talent to go all the way this year, though the race for the 3-A title should be very competitive as three teams are ranked in the pre-season top 30. A pair of Alabama recruits, RHP Wes Mugarian (9-0, 0.75, 55 IP/107 SO; .432-1-20) and IF Austen Smith (.451-5-32) highlight the returning players. The Crusaders should have no problem putting runs on the board as senior OF Austin Farrell (.453-9-43) and senior IFs Wade Wass (.410-9-34) and Stuart Todd (.346-1-19) also return. Joining Mugarian on the mound is Florida State recruit Cody Alling (8-2-2, 2.20, 54 IP/81 SO), a lefthander, and senior RHP Nick Miller (4-0-1, 0.80, 35 IP/43 SO).
23. RANCHO BUENA VISTA ( Calif. ) HS (24-11)
The return of a player like senior SS Tony Wolters is a good place for any team to start, but this isn’t a one-man show for the Longhorns. Wolters (.380-6-29), a San Diego recruit, is generally considered one of the nation’s finest shortstops and earned MVP honors at the Aflac All-American Game last summer. Wolters teams with Cal Poly-bound 2B Jimmy Allen (.387-5-28) and senior 3B Jake Stinnett (.377-5-33) to give the Longhorns a lot of punch in the infield alone. Stinnett (2-0, 2.93, 4 SV), Indiana-bound RHP Reed Reznicek (4-1, 3.80) and Notre Dame-bound LHP Anthony McIver provide plenty of pitching depth.
24. AMERICAN HERITAGE HS, Plantation , Fla. (30-5)
The consensus national champs in 2008, American Heritage fell short of a second consecutive 3-A state title last year by losing to The Bolles School ( Jacksonville ) in the state finals. The Patriots are loaded with young talent and could conceivably be in the national spotlight for the next several years. Sophomore RHP Nick Travieso (.341-6-25) is one of the nation’s top-ranked players in the 2012 class, and while he did not pitch last year it is apparent his upside on the mound is considerable. Junior RHP Jimmy Nesselt (11-1, 1.56, 76 IP), senior LHP Chase Kahn (4-0, 4.51) and sophomore LHP Brandon Diaz (1-1, 2.37, 2 SV) give the Patriots plenty of pitching depth. Offensively, junior C Brandon Sedell (.412-6-30) is one of the top hitting prospects in the country, while 3B Brandon Lopez (.313-2-18) and C/3B Michael Klement (.294-4-30), both sophomores, give the Patriots plenty of pop.
25. HARRISON HS, Kennesaw , Ga. (20-10)
In a year where there is no clear-cut favorite in the Georgia 5-A ranks, the Hoyas have the depth to make a serious run at their first state championship since 1998. RHP Devin Rentz (3-1, 2.63) and OF/RHP Christian Turnipseed (5-1, 2.76) are the Hoyas’ top returning arms. Offensively, Western Carolina-bound C Adam Martin (.378-3-26), junior OF Michael Hodorowski (.320, 21 SB) and sophomore SS Matt Gonzalez will be counted on for big seasons.
26. THE BOLLES SCHOOL , Jacksonville , Fla. (31-4)
The defending 3-A state champion Bulldogs looked primed for a repeat with almost all of their top players returning. North Florida-bound 1B Caleb Denmark (.462-9-49) and Duke-bound SS David Perkins (.375-4-38) will lead the charge offensively. A second Duke recruit, senior RHP Mark Lumpa (11-0, 0.87), and senior LHP Michael Spence (6-1, 1.83, 34 IP) are the top returning arms. Spence (.351-5-25) will also be a factor at the plate. Junior SS Austin Slater (.398-5-36) and sophomore RHP Hayden Hurst (3-1, 1.66) are ranked among the top 20 players nationally in their respective draft classes.
27. MENCHVILLE HS, Newport News , Va. (26-2)
The Monarchs, defending state 3-A state champions, will again feature a dynamic duo on the mound with the return of East Carolina-bound RHP Austin Chrismon (11-0, 1.05) and the addition of junior RHP Deshorn Lake , who should step in for departed RHP Ethan Carter, now at South Carolina . Lake, a potential first-rounder in 2011 whose fastball has topped out at 96 mph, transferred in from the Virgin Islands .
28. ROCKY MOUNTAIN HS, Fort Collins , Colo. (22-4)
Colorado ’s three-time defending state champions appear loaded again as the Lobos return most of their key contributors from last year's team. Offensive stalwarts Jacob Stewart (.511-11-50) and Bryan Peters (.422-9-30), who are at Stanford and Nebraska, respectively, will need to be replaced, but nearly everyone else is back, notably LHP/OF Marco Gonzales (.520-5-41; 9-1, 2.12), a Gonzaga recruit who has won the last three state championship games; SS Pierce Trumper (.424-2-16), an Arkansas recruit, and senior OF Chris Roglen (.460-5-27). Other key contributors are Air Force-bound C Bryan Matz (.341-3-7) and senior IFs Luke White (.369-4-19) and Michael Seidel (.386-3-11).
29. GEORGE WASHINGTON HS, New York (42-5)
The perennial New York City power has produced stars such as Rod Carew and Manny Ramirez, and is primed for a big year with several key players returning. The team’s offense should be particularly potent as SS Mike Antonio (.487-6-43, 29 SB), a St. John’s recruit, and IF Xyruse Martinez (.442-4-39, 39 SB) return after monster junior years. Other key contributors for the Trojans include sophomore C Nelson Rodriguez (.417-3-39) and senior OF Alomar Guzman (.379-4-33). The pitching staff returns the likes of junior RHP Yael Regalado (11-1, 1.03, 63 IP/82 SO), senior LHP Nestor Bautista (9-2, 1.12, 69 IP/93 SO), senior RHP Francisco Santana (8 - 0, 1.32, 43 IP/59 SO) and junior RHP Saulo Madera (6-0, 1.03, 41 IP/44 SO).
30. BISHOP AMAT HS, La Puente , Calif. (26-6)
The Lancers advanced to the CIF Southern section Division IV semifinals last year, but have title aspirations this year with one of the nation’s top offensive teams. UC Irvine-bound C Jerry McClanahan (.448-7-38) is the top returnee, while sophomore 3B/RHP Rio Ruiz (.358-3-30) is one of the top-ranked players in the 2012 draft class. Junior OF Jay Anderson (.432-3-20) and junior IF Adrian Franco (.440) also return. On the mound, LHP Paul Paez (10-3, 2.17, 2 SV, 67 IP), a San Diego recruit, is the Lancers’ top arm.
31. BRENHAM ( Texas ) HS (32-6)
The Texas 4-A state runner-up last year returns nearly all of its key players and rates as the favorite this season. The Cubs feature one of the nation’s top double- play combinations in Texas-bound 2B Erich Weiss (.481-3-34) and Arkansas-bound SS Drake Roberts (.390-4-35). Senior C Seth Spivey (.421) and junior OF Chance Bolcerek (.394-7-29) also return after strong 2009 campaigns. The pitching staff also should be strong again as Houston-bound RHP Chase Welbrock (11-0, 1.14, 67 IP/76 SO) and junior Ty Schlottmann (8-1, 2.46, 62 IP) are back.
32. ST. RITA HS, Chicago (35-7)
The Illinois 4-A runner-up last spring and state champion during the summer, St. Rita had its sights set extremely high this year until ace LHP Shane Conlon (9-1, 2.81) decided to transfer to Naperville Central High for his senior year. Conlon also delivered 16 doubles and four homers at the plate. The team still has state-title aspirations, and the catalyst will again be OF/LHP Mark Payton (.438-11-40; 2-1, 2.10), the state MVP who has committed to Arizona State . Junior LHP Joe Filomeno is one the top pitching prospects in the Midwest , and will team with Payton and Northern Illinois-bound LHP Anthony Andres (5-0, 3.87) to form a solid pitching staff for the Mustangs.
33. CATHOLIC HS, Baton Rouge , La. (19-16)
The Bears expected more in 2009 after advancing to the state semifinals in 2008, but may not be down long as they return a loaded pitching staff this year. Tulane-bound RHP/OF Alex Facundas is not only one of the best pitchers, but one of the top two-way threats in the nation as he has slugged 22 home runs over the past two years. Junior RHPs Aaron Nola and Alex Massey have already committed to Louisiana State and Tulane, respectively.
34. POQUOSON ( Va. ) HS (28-1)
Virginia ’s defending 2-A champion should challenge No. 27 Menchville High as the top team in the state this season. The Islanders feature two top players in Virginia-bound LHP Kyle Crockett (13-0, 0.91, 96 SO; .434, 3 HR) and Virginia Tech-bound SS/RHP Chad Pinder (.432), a three-sport star who was the winning pitcher in last year’s state championship game.
35. POPE HS, Marietta , Ga. (31-8)
The Greyhounds are the defending 5-A state champions in Georgia , but lost their top two arms to Southeastern Conference schools. They still return several key contributors, including Clemson-bound SS Steve Wilkerson and Auburn-bound LHP Will Kendall (7-1, 1.56, 49 IP). Senior OFs Jason Parker and Stephen White , junior C Connor Lynch and junior RHP Alex Hegner will all be counted on for bigger seasons.
36. MATER DEI HS, Santa Ana , Calif. (24-6)
Mater Dei was the top team in Southern California for most of 2009, but the Monarchs failed to close the deal, losing in the playoffs to surging Edison High. Outfielder Cory Hahn (.367-6-17), an Arizona State recruit, will be the centerpiece of this year's team. A talented offensive player, Hahn also will be asked to contribute on the mound after not throwing last year. Senior RHP Matt Blanchard (4-1, 1.81, 5 SV) is the Monarchs’ top returning arm. Offensively, California-bound SS Derek Campbell (.340-7-21) and senior OF A.J. Roth (.333) join Hahn among six returning regulars. Despite a disappointing 2009 season, senior Konner Armijo is considered one of the most talented high-school catchers in California .
37. VALENCIA ( Calif. ) HS (19-8)
The Vikings might have provided a sneak preview of the nation’s top team in the country in 2011 as they had arguably the most talented group of underclassmen in the country. But the team’s chances took a big hit when junior SS Christian Lopes (.453-15-33) transferred to Edison High. Lopes and sophomore 3B Trey Williams (.429-5-27) are both ranked among the top 10 prospects in their respective classes, and would have been the anchors for the next two Vikings squads. Williams, senior C Scotland McKenzie (.435-7-30), junior IFs Alex Bishop (.347-2-12) and Quincy Quintero and sophomore IF Timothy Lopes all should provide significant contributions this year. On the mound, the Vikings return all of their top arms from last year, including junior RHPs David Hausman (5-4, 3.11, 45 IP) and Nick Rivas (4-0, 2.76, 38 IP), and senior RHP Tyler Anderson (3-0, 3.50, 24 IP).
38. PINNACLE HS, Phoenix (25-8)
Putting runs on the board should not be a problem for the Pioneers as they return several key players from last year’s team that lost in the state quarterfinals. C T.C. Mark (.455-7-40), an Arizona recruit, highlights an offense that is loaded with a talented group of juniors like 3B Alex Real (.455-7-37), OF Tyler Krause (.390-8-25), RHP/IF Steve Casey (.385-2-23) and OF Jake Peeveyhouse (.418-2-20). Pitching will be key for Pinnacle as Steve Casey (5-3, 3.94, 53 IP) is the only returning player who has seen significant action on the mound.
39. OWASSO ( Okla. ) HS (34-4)
Owasso has played in the state championship game 12 times in the last 13 years, and has 11 state titles overall. Despite losing several talented players from last year’s championship team, the Rams should bounce right back after picking up a huge transfer in junior RHP Dylan Bundy from Sperry High. Bundy (12-1, 0.85, 82 IP/11 BB/183 SO as a sophomore) also is a force at the plate (.500), and will hit in the middle of the order. Three returning seniors, OF/LHP Ryan Wilson (5-0, 3.25, 28 IP/39 SO), SS Garrett Schaede and RHP Kyle Wood have all committed to play college baseball.
40. MEMORIAL HS, Houston (28-5)
The Mustangs fell to No. 1 Bellaire High in the regional 5-A quarterfinals last year, but have high hopes this year with several key players returning, both in the field and on the mound. Houston-bound RHP Jacob Dahlstand , Villanova-bound RHP Baron Davis and RHP Nick Bergmann are the top returning arms. Offensively, the Mustangs should have no problem putting runs on the board as junior C Wayne Taylor , a Stanford recruit; senior OF Paul Driscoll , junior IF Carter Burgess and junior OF/LHP Harris Rome return.
41. RANCHO BERNARDO HS, San Diego (24-11)
A perennial Southern California powerhouse that has produced numerous first-round draft picks through the years, Rancho Bernardo High should present the greatest challenge for No. 10 Poway High in the San Diego CIF Division I section this year. San Diego State-bound C Brad Haynal (.410-9-31), Arizona State-bound RHP/1B Trevor Williams (9-3, 2.49, 73 IP; .384-2-16) and promising junior 1B/LHP Max Homick (.404-4-32) will lead the Broncos.
42. BRAZOSWOOD HS, Clute , Texas (29-6)
The Buccaneers fell to Pearland High last year in the regional finals, but have high expectations again. They have one of the nation’s top two-way players returning in Texas Christian-bound RHP/SS Tyler Green (5-1, 2.03; .388-10-38), along with Rice-bound SS/RHP Derek Hamilton (.400-6-31) and senior OF Andrew Garner , both first-team all-district players last year.
43. MOELLER HS, Cincinnati , Ohio (25-5)
The Crusaders once produced the likes of Barry Larkin and Ken Griffey Jr., and remain an Ohio power as they won a fifth state championship in 2009. With a roster that has four seniors committed to Division I programs, there is every reason to believe a repeat is in the works for the Crusaders. C Tyler Hutchinson (.451-4-20), a Campbell recruit, is the team’s top returning hitter. Two-way talent Robby Sunderman (.396), a Dayton recruit; OF Ethan McAlpine , a Cincinnati recruit, and senior IF Kevin Thamann (.342) are the other top hitters returning from last year's state title team. Sunderman (8-1, 1.94, 47 IP) was the winning pitcher in the championship game, while RHP David Whitehead (2-1, 2.84, 24 IP) has committed to Elon.
44. DON BOSCO PREP, Ramsey , N.J. (26-5)
Don Bosco Prep has become the premier program in the Northeast over the last few years, sending more than a dozen players to Division I colleges in just the last two years. While this year's squad might not have quite as many prospects, there is still plenty of talent on the Ironmen roster. RHP Eric Stevens , a Boston College recruit; SS Anthony Simon , a Delaware recruit; and RHP Joey McNamara , a Lehigh recruit, will continue to add to the impressive Division I pipeline that Don Bosco has created. This year will see a change in the coaching ranks as former major league lefthander Mike Stanton takes over for Greg Butler, who compiled a 59-5 record in two years.
45. ST. FRANCIS HS, Mountain View , Calif. (26-9)
The Lancers look like the early front-runner among Northern California ’s top teams this year with several talented players back from last year. Senior OF Scott Jarvis (.425) is the Lancers’ top returning hitter, while Oregon State-bound RHP Cole Baylis , Cal Poly-bound C Chris Hoo and junior OF/RHP Tyler Goeddel , a UCLA recruit, also return for the Lancers.
46. LAKELAND ( Fla. ) HS (23-3)
A state 6-A semifinalist a year ago, the Dreadnaughts return two of the nation’s top hitters in Miami-bound SS/RHP Yordy Cabrera and Florida State-bound C Eric Arce . Cabrera (.462-4-28) and Arce (373-3-27) will lead a potent offensive attack that returns five regulars, but the Dreadnaughts will need their pitching staff to step up if they plan on making a deep run in the state tournament again.
47. CALALLEN HS, Corpus Christi , Texas (35-5)
The Texas 4-A state championship seems to go through Corpus Christi every year as arch-rivals and perennial powers Calallen and Moody High have a near-unprecedented rein over their classification. This year should be no different. Calallen has its sights on a fourth state title in a decade with a nice balance of pitching and hitting. Senior LHP Rob Zastryzny (9-4, 2.25, 71 IP/98 SO) and junior RHP Nick Ginn (8-0, 1.17) return to lead the Wildcats’ pitching staff, which will need to fill the void left by Jordan John (13-0, 0.26, 82 IP/145 K), who is now pitching at Oklahoma. Offensively, Zastryzny (.325-5-40), sophomore C Wyatt Mathisen (.407-5-54, 17 SB), senior 1B Roland Resendez (.388-7-41) and senior OF Hunter Whetsell (.339-4-15) will be counted on again.
48. GILBERT ( Ariz. ) HS (17-14)
Putting runs on the board should be no problem for the Tigers as they return four of their top hitters from last year, including Arizona-bound 3B D.J. Peterson (.408-16-36), senior OF Tyler Kamtz (.425-8-25), junior C Nathaniel Causey (.466-4-14) and junior SS Drew Stankiewicz (.341-1-14).
49. LASSITER HS, Marietta , Ga. (22-9)
A new era begins this year at Lassiter as Mickey McMurtry is no longer the head coach after 17 seasons, two of which ended with state championships. Offensively, the Trojans should be strong again with Georgia-bound C Brandon Stephens (.350-7-25) and Kennesaw State-bound RHP/1B Stephen Janas returning. C/3B Reed Anthes and SS Nelson Ward are two of the top-ranked juniors in the state.
50. CHARLOTTE CHRISTIAN HS, Charlotte , N.C. (30-3)
The Knights won a state championship last year, and should be in line again as they return four Division I recruits. 51. ST. EDWARD HS, Lakewood , Ohio (24-8)
The 2008 state champion Eagles are looking to make another run at a state title with North Carolina-bound RHP/3B Stetson Allie (.450-7-37; 2-0, 0.00, 15 IP/28 SO) leading the charge. Though Allie may be more valuable as a position player, his upside is on the mound. One of the hardest throwers in high-school baseball history, his fastball was clocked as high as 99 mph last summer. Allie , Georgia Tech-bound C Alex Lavisky (.481-6-27) and Kansas State-bound SS Ross Kivett (.417) give the Eagles one of the most potent offensive attacks in the country.
52. PACE ( Fla. ) HS (20-5)
The Patriots were bounced in the regional quarterfinals last year, but expectations are high this year as they return several top players. Mississippi State-bound OF/LHP C.T. Bradford (.425; 7-1, 1.20) and Michigan-bound IF Mark Bass return, while junior 3B/RHP Trent Higginbothem will be a valuable two-way player. Sophomore SS Addison Russell is currently the second-ranked player nationally in his class.
53. OAK MOUNTAIN HS, Birmingham , Ala. (16-12)
After a disappointing 2009 season, culminating in a first-round exit from the playoffs, much bigger things are expected from Oak Mountain in 2010. Senior RHP/3B Cary Baxter (5-2, 1.61), junior RHP Jake Hubbard and sophomore OF David Dahl have all committed to Alabama and will be expected to carry the Eagles this spring.
54. FLOWER MOUND ( Texas ) HS (23-9)
The Jaguars return a deep, experienced team that advanced to the Texas 5-A regional semifinals last year, before being knocked out by champion Socorro High. Senior RHP Shane Henderson is one of the top prospects in the state and will team with Tulane-bound LHP Zack Adams and Oklahoma-bound RHP Steven Bruce to give the Jaguars one of the nation’s top pitching staffs.
55. NAPLES ( Fla. ) HS (33-1)
The Golden Eagles, Florida ’s defending 4-A state champion, finished 2009 as the fourth-ranked team in the country. Miami-bound 3B Brad Fieger (.452-6-44) and senior OF Kyle Zech (.447-0-26, 20 SB) are among eight returning starters, while Stetson-bound LHP Cameron Griffith (5-0, 1.21, 5 SV) should lead the pitching staff.
56. REDLANDS EAST VALLEY HS, Redlands , Calif. (23-7)
The Wildcats have one of the most talented pitching staffs in Southern California with a prominent San Diego recruit, LHP Griffin Murphy (8-2, 1.28; .419) leading the way. Senior RHP Tyler Shreve has committed to play college football at Colorado State , but also is considered one of the elite high-school pitching prospects in California . A third pitcher, RHP Kyle McNutt , has committed to UNLV.
57. EVANGEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY , Shreveport , La. (32-4)
The defending 2-A state champions look primed for a repeat with a pair of Arkansas recruits, RHP Bronson Gillam (13-1) and LHP/OF Jeff Harvill leading the way. Gillam was selected the 2-A state player of the year in 2009, while senior C Brandon Spencer (.444) and junior 3B Connor Castellano (.473) were first-team all-state selections last year.
58. OLYMPIA HS, Orlando , Fla. (21-5)
The Titans look like the top team in the perennially-strong Orlando area this year as they return several talented players from last year’s squad, including Clemson-bound OF Dominic Attanasio and Michigan-bound RHP Brett Winger (5-2). Sophomore OFs Walker Weichel and Jesse Winker are both ranked among the top 50 players in the 2012 class.
59. GERMANTOWN ACADEMY , Fort Washington , Pa. (20-4)
The Patriots have been a fixture in the national rankings the past few years, and this year should be no different as they return North Carolina-bound SS Sean Coyle (.463) and Florida-bound 3B/RHP Keenan Kish . Coyle is one of the top pure hitters in the country, while sophomore C Chris Harvey ranks among the top prospects nationally in the 2012 class.
60. OVIEDO ( Fla. ) HS (14-7)
With Miami-bound RHP A.J. Cole at the front of the rotation and a pair of Central Florida recruits, senior LHP Trevor Berry and junior RHP Ryan Meyer , on the pitching staff , the Lions have the pitching to compete with anyone. The 6-foot-5 Cole is a potential top-five pick in the draft in June. Whether the Lions’ offense is able to put enough runs on the board this spring is the unanswered question.
61. BARTLETT ( Tenn. ) HS (32-11)
State quarterfinalists a year ago, Bartlett should challenge No. 3-ranked Farragut for the Tennessee 3-A championship with several key players back. Senior 1B/P Luke Deaton is the returning conference player of the year, while a second two-way talent, Tennessee-bound C/RHP Taylor Morton , is considered the state’s top prospect.

63. DESERT RIDGE HS, Mesa , Ariz. (29-5)
The defending 5-A state champion Jaguars should be favorites to repeat as they return Arizona State-bound IF/RHP Travis Flores and Arizona-bound RHP Kristopher Ashby .
64. FORSYTH COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL , Lewisville , N.C. (13-8)
Forsyth Country Day scored big in the off-season when RHP/OF Adam Griffin , one of the nation’s top juniors and a North Carolina recruit, transferred from West Forsyth High. Griffin and South Carolina-bound OF Seth Constable should help the Furies challenge No. 50 Charlotte Christian in the North Carolina private-school ranks.
65. MOODY HS, Corpus Christi , Texas (37-4)
Moody was the Texas 4-A runner-up last year, and is one program that can be counted on to be in the mix for a state championship every year. While pitchers like Justin Meza (16-1) and Andrew Cantus (14-1) have departed, the Trojans’ offense should again be a strong point with Missouri-bound 2B/RHP Michael Franco (.410), 1B Justin Perales (.459) and C Marcos Villanueva (.405) all returning.
66. EAST COWETA HS, Sharpsburg , Ga. (27-5)
The Indians have reached the final eight of the Georgia state tournament six times in the last seven years, with no titles to show. This could be the year they get over the hump as they return Louisiana State-bound RHP Cameron Bedrosian , son of ex-big leaguer Steve Bedrosian. A top prospect in this year’s draft, Bedrosian posted a miniscule 1.10 ERA last year and already holds the school record for innings pitched (193) and strikeouts (269). The Indians return all but four players from last year’s roster, including SS Felton James (.485), who posted the second-highest batting average in school history.

Arizona State-bound SS James McDonald and Arizona-bound RHP Konner Wade highlight the roster of returning players for the Firebirds.
68. CATHEDRAL HS, Indianapolis (26-1)
The Fighting Irish won their first 26 games a year ago, before suffering their only loss early in the Indiana 4-A playoffs. They have some unfinished business to take care of and junior LHP/OF Dillon Peters (10-1, 0.99; .495-4-33), a Texas recruit, is back to lead the charge. Two all-league players, senior OF Scott Miller and junior 3B Phil Mosey , also return.
69. PELHAM ( Ala. ) HS (24-6)

73. CARTERSVILLE ( Ga. ) HS (30-5)
Despite the loss of OF Donovan Tate, the third overall pick in the 2009 draft, the Hurricanes are a favorite to win their third consecutive 3-A state title. Offensively, The Citadel-bound SS Laine Frazier and senior OF Colton Montgomery are the top returnees.
74. LEXINGTON CATHOLIC HS, Lexington , Ky. (29-8)
