Resmondo Two Wins Away From 17u Title

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Now just two wins away from the 17u BCS National Championship, Resmondo FTB Baseball has shown that it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.

“Resilience,” Resmondo Head Coach Howie Krause said of his team’s run. “We didn't play our best that first game, the other team played well, but the kids bounced back, they stuck together. But we knew it wasn't about one game, it was going to be about the whole week.”



After dropping their first game of the tournament on Monday, the team went 3-1-1 over their next five to make it to the Gold Playoffs.

Their prize for doing so: playing three consecutive games on Friday to advance to the semifinals.

“It's almost like a battle of attrition,” Krause said. “It's just who can withstand the heat and humidity. We got a great pitching performance out of [Jensen Secular] in game 3 and that goes a long way.”

As his head coach stated, Secular received the start in game 3, a matchup against Go Pro Daly 2023.

The uncommitted right-hander tossed a complete game in the 10-2 victory, striking out eight with his arsenal of a high-80s fastball, mid-70s slider, and low-70s curveball.

Go Pro did strike first, driving in two runs in the bottom of the second, including an RBI single from Philip Carlton.

But Resmondo responded in a big way two innings later, bringing in nine of their 10 runs in the top of the fourth.

Eight consecutive batters reached base before registering their first out, with Auburn commit Colton Wombles leading off the inning with a standup double.

The team batted through their lineup nearly two times before the inning ended, with Nathanael Coupet, Eduardo Balboa, Mason Resmondo, Chris Knier and Wombles each driving in at least one run apiece.

Secular continued his brilliance on the mound following the offensive output, striking out two in the bottom half of the inning.

“He just gets after it, it doesn't seem like anything fazes him,” Krause said postgame. “It's almost like a duck, maybe below the water his brain’s going 100 miles an hour but when he's on that mound, he just looks calm, cool and collected.”

The fourth inning output proved more than enough in the decisive 10-2 victory, advancing Resmondo to a semifinal meeting Saturday morning.

While the championship is within reach, the team knows they are one of four remaining teams, each just as talented as the other.

“Coming into this, there's so many good baseball teams here,” Krause said. “So the thought of actually winning it, yeah, you want to win it, but until it actually potentially becomes a reality, [you don't know]. Maybe it will if we play good tomorrow.”
