HS Rankings Update: May 10

It’s been an insanely fun week of baseball as some of the best parts of high school playoffs have been under way around the country and while we unfortunately have some nationally-ranked teams end their season without a state title, because of the fact that many teams are from the same state, we also see plenty of teams emerge and prove that they’re worthy of this national recognition. While it is still early in most of the playoffs that have begun, three teams have made their way back into the rankings this week, with two that have never been ranked this spring.

Starting at the top, it’s Stoneman Douglas (Fla.) and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (Mich.) as the very clear one-two with a good bit of margin between them and the resumes of the rest. As Douglas moves into regional play having not lost since mid-March, St. Mary’s sits at 25-0 and is pressing hard for the top spot. IMG Academy (Fla.) and Orange Lutheran (Calif.) follow at the No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, while a new face takes the No. 5 spot in Calvary Christian (Fla.) who has been very impressive and has had their only loss of the year come in extra innings to ranked Tampa Jesuit.

Familiar faces fill the next few spots as Bishop Gorman (Nev.), Hamilton (Ariz.), Tompkins (Texas) and Rockwall Heath (Texas) make up spots 6-9 while Houston County (Ga.) enters the top-10 for the first time with a winner-take-all game against Buford today with a spot in the Georgia 6A Final 4 on the line. Some risers make up the mid-teens of the rankings as Parkview (Ga.) moves to No. 14 having locked up a spot in the Georgia 7A Final Four, JSerra (Calif.) has made it through the first round of Southern Section playoffs, and Providence (N.C.) now sits at 26-0 moving into their playoffs in North Carolina.

Our three new teams this week include a familiar face in Owasso (Okla.), who punched a ticket to their state tournament, and two new faces in Blythewood (S.C.), who is 28-1 and moving through the playoffs in South Carolina, and Dutchtown (La.), who has a very real path to taking home the 5A state title in Louisiana after powerhouse Barbe was knocked out last weekend.

It’s certainly talked about around the country how exciting this time of the year is as teams are able to match up against the best of the best around their state, and we’ll continue to follow along with all of it as we move just under a month away from another season in the books.
