JUCO Prospects: Top 500

Coming off the incredible weekend that was in Panama City Beach at the College Baseball Classic, in addition to great starts all around the country, we can say with confidence that JUCO baseball is as strong, as talented, and as deep as ever. This particular class is led by a pair of potential top 50 picks in Chipola’s Cam Collier, a likely first rounder for years now, and Northwest Florida State’s Jake Madden, who has been otherworldly good to start the year. Both of those guys will have scouts flocking to the Panhandle of Florida for looks, and both of those programs offer a bevy of prospects in addition to the aforementioned pair.

After No. 2 is where this ranking got interesting, as there’s plenty of high-profile power arms with various profile concerns jockeying for draft position, as well as some known positional players and newcomers to the overall scouting cognizance. Kaleb Applebey, Adrian Siravo, Jacob Misiorowski, Colby Holcombe, and several others all have that big, power-armed righthander with developing command/secondaries profile, and given how Holcombe in particular has started the season, it’s easy to see any or all of them popping in a big way this spring.

We’re especially bullish on Hayden Minton, mostly because he’s one of the few upper-echelon arms that we have evaluated as a likely starter long term, with the others all positing at least some level of relief risk. He’s a clean delivery, good command, 4-pitch mix guy with projection on the body and consistent improvement throughout his development, and we’re definitely buying that stock at present. Freshmen arms Kenya Huggins Jr from Chipola and Will Cannon from Northwest Florida are guys who really leapt onto the national radar in PCB, but we’ve had them evaluated with high grades dating back years with Huggins and to the fall with Cannon. As freshmen, it’s expected that they’ll have some ups and downs this spring, but both have excellent arm talent and the command is better early on than anyone expected.

There will assuredly be some bats who pop up over the course of the spring, but right now Paul Winland from Florida SouthWestern, Sabin Ceballos and Harold Coll from San Jac, and Brandon Fields from SCF represent 2nd-year players with legitimate draft upside as bats. Some freshmen are going to be in that mix as well, with prominent class of 2021 bats Alex Ulloa and Chase Valentine both names to monitor in that regard. Myles Austin is back on the radar following a good fall at Wabash Valley and a hot start to the season, his toolset remains prominent overall.

The depth of this JUCO class is as strong as I’ve ever seen it, part of the reason why we felt so comfortable expanding this board from the traditional 300 out to 500. It’s also why this is a little delayed in releasing compared to previous years—we just felt it was better to take more time, get more data, and as such do a better job rather than slapping something together for the sake of content.

In addition to this Top 500 you see below, we’ll end up ranking somewhere around 200 more players throughout the course of our regional previews, as we continue to set the industry standard when it comes to the overall coverage and evaluation of JUCO baseball and its players. -Brian Sakowski
