WWBA Freshman World Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2

The 8:00 am matchup between 5 Star Carolina 15u National and the Diamond Jacks Super 15, who are based out of New Jersey, provided college recruiters a look a pair of left-handers who locked horn and went nearly pitch for pitch in Briggs McKenzie (2025, Wendell, N.C.) and Brett Gable (2025, Marlton, N.J.) over 6 innings of work, allowing just an unearned run between the pair.

It was McKenzie and his club who came out victorious and the 6-foot-2, 148-pound southpaw was in complete control from the first pitch of the game, punching out 9 to just 1 walk and 2 hits while working with 68% strikes. The strike percentage and lone walk come as no surprise as the delivery and overall operation from McKenzie was one of the more refined ones we have seen to this point in the tournament, working with plenty of rhythm and cadence to his delivery which led to excellent repeatability and a pounding of the zone. His arm path is shorter through the backside and works well through his release, routinely working on top of the baseball while comfortably living in the 78-81 mph range with his heater, bumping an 82 along the way. The fastball offered nice late, running life through the zone which he paired nicely with his curveball, a pitch he showed immediate comfort with and went to frequently, showing quality spin and depth on the 69-71 mph offering. The physical projection is off the charts and McKenzie already shows an exception feel for his delivery, meaning he’ll be an arm to watch out of the Carolinas moving forward.
