Southeast Fall Frenzy Scout Notes

Patrick Deegan (2023, Marietta, Ga.) is a 6-foot-1, 169-pound southpaw who is suiting up for East Cobb Colt .45’s 16u Orange this fall. A highly-touted pitcher in the state, Deegan took the mound for his club on Friday night and was excellent, locking down his opponent’s bats as his teammates gave him plenty of run support to capitalize on a five-inning complete game, two-hit, mercy-rule win. On the mound, Patrick delivers from a full windup, situated on the third base side of the rubber. He deploys a slow and controlled tempo to his windup, and matches his tempo with a slow and hidden arm action that adds deception to his delivery. Patrick does a nice job tunneling his repertoire from a low three-quarter slot, which helped him garner a lot of swing-and-miss, and weak contact throughout the outing. To work through his assignment, Deegan mixed a fastball in the mid- to upper-70s, with some run through the zone, with a curveball with natural depth and bottom in the mid-60s. When all was said and done, Deegan would collect seven punchouts on the evening, bringing his yearly total to 50 in just 40 innings of work. With two years left to his prep career, Patrick is an interesting arm to monitor as he continues to grow and develop on the mound.
 
Another arm to capitalize on his assignment Friday night was South DeKalb Tribe right-hander Cartier Atchison (2023, Lithonia, Ga.), who toed the rubber at The Walker School. A lanky and athletic primary second baseman, Cartier earned the start and turned in an outing which lasted 5 2/3 scoreless innings, while he scattered two hits, walked three, and collected an impressive 10 punchouts. On the mound, Atchison demonstrates good pitchability and balance in his delivery, which allows him to fill the zone with his repertoire. He has a mechanically sound windup, while the right-hander releases his repertoire from a three-quarter to high three-quarter slot. Atchison gets good life on his fastball and keeps it low in the zone, helping to create a lot of swing-and-miss and weak contact. Cartier would mix a curveball while ahead in the count, in the mid-60s, with some developing depth and bottom which helped him create a lot of whiffs all night long. While filling the zone 62% of the time, Atchison stayed aggressive on the mound, and worked ahead of over 80% of the hitters he faced, an impressive number. Cartier would get it done at the plate as well, as he would go 1-for-2 on Friday with a walk, and ended the weekend reaching base in each game he played. With two years left to his prep career, Atchison’s play this weekend is exciting if it forecasts what is to come out of the young junior from Tucker High School.
