Draft Reports: 1-25

26. Trey Sweeney, SS, Eastern Illinois (3Y)
L-R, 6-4/185, Louisville, Ky.
Previously Drafted: Never Drafted

One of the few real collegiate bat risers in the draft this year, Sweeney entered the spring somewhere in the 4-6 round range on most boards and then, more or less, just mashed his way into first round consideration to the tune of a 1.234 OPS with 14 bombs and a nearly 2:1 (46:24) BB:K ratio. Sweeney is a long-bodied infielder who has the arm strength and hands to play the left side of the infield, but who may well out grow shortstop and move to third. The calling card of the profile right now is obviously the potential offensive impact, as Sweeney has shown all the traits of a high-level bat this spring. He’s got plus bat speed from the left side with a clean path, good strike zone awareness, good swing decision traits, and plenty of both present and projectable power. The potential for a real power-hitting third baseman at the highest level exists here.

27. Will Bednar, RHP, Mississippi State (2YR)
R-R, 6-2/230, Valencia, Pa.
Previously Drafted: Never Drafted
