Recruiting Notebook: December 14

Carlos Gonzalez, RHP, Class of 2022
Commitment: Washington State

What Gonzalez brings to the table for Washington State is something that every recruiting class covets; an extremely projectable, high upside arm that should continue to get better as he progresses through the remainder of his high school career and hopefully makes his way across the country to Pullman. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound righthander is just that as he has been up to 95 mph in looks this summer, while sitting 90-93 mph and showing the capability for more velocity as he refines both his arm path and mechanics. The towering New York native incorporates a relatively low-effort delivery while powering downhill to create a ton of plane to his high-octane fastball. When right, Gonzalez flashes a high-spin, late-biting slider that has the potential to give him at least two plus pitches in his arsenal. The command may be the biggest issue and what ultimately determines if he becomes a starter or back-end, high-leverage reliever long term.

Outlook for the Class: Gonzalez, ranked No. 134 in the latest Class of 2022 rankings is the highest ranked commit in Washington State’s deep recruiting class, joining Tyrus Williams, Ryan Orr and Caden Casagrande as players ranked within Perfect Games Top 500. This class in particular for Head Coach Brian Green is a solid mix of both position players and pitching as he looks to make his mark with the first true recruiting class since he has taken the reigns of the program.
