Battle of the Midwest Scout Notes: Day 1

Derrick Smith (2022, White Bear Lake, Minn.) continues to showcase himself as a projectable arm in Minnesota’s 2022 class, as the North Carolina State commit made strides on the mound for the MN Icemen 16U group on Wednesday. Smith sat 84-87 mph with the fastball, running it up to 88 on occasions and showing the most feel for secondary stuff I have seen from the righthander. Smith’s curveball was quality on Wednesday, as the White Bear Lake native landed it for strikes with some frequency in the low-70's. Smith flashed a changeup as well, though the fading mix of speeds is still the most developing out of the three-pitch mix. Smith is still growing into the 6-foot-2 frame, and more velocity will continue to come as the frame matures.
