Mountain West Scout Notes: Day 1 & 2

The 15u/16u PG MountainWest Elite Championship got underway immediately following the conclusion of the PG West World Series. This event which usually takes place in the Henderson and Vegas areas, features some of the top younger prospects in the western United States

The tournament kicked off with the 15u division in the afternoon as TB SoCal dropped a tight ballgame to LVR in the seventh. Cole Stokes (2023, Redondo Beach, Calif.) was electric though right out of the gate, sitting 88-90 mph with his fastball. Mejia has a longer arm action with some whip to it as he comes up to a three-quarters to high three-quarters slot. He works down the hill with a high front side and kicks down the mound with his leg after his leg kick. He did have some command issues throughout his 2 1/3 innings pitched but showed flashes of plus stuff, especially for his age. His breaking ball is a low 11-5 shaped slider that he has a tendency to tug, but has plenty of vertical break to miss bats. It will only continue to improve as his arm continues to strengthen and as his poise on the mound continues to mature.
