Weather halts the 15u Elite Chamionship

Colton Olinger
HOOVER, Ala. - The 15U age group showed up in Hoover, Alabama ready to compete. With action starting on Friday there was everything from 90 plus mph arms, to home runs clearing the wall with ease. Each team was out to prove they deserved a spot in the championship game. When all things were settled on Monday the last two teams standing were 5 Star National 15U Dobbs and Top Tier Roos American 2023.

5 Star made its way to the championship game by way of a Brady Neal walk off hit in the bottom of the 10th inning against an ultra-talented East Coast Sox Founders Club team. In the semi-final game 5 Star gave the ball to Tennessee commit Dylan Loy. Loy, battled going four innings allowing three runs while striking out four. In the fifth inning reliever Kaleb Johnson came in and ended up going the next five innings allowing just three hits and striking out seven while picking up the win. In the fourth inning down a run 5 Star left fielder and tournament MVP CJ Richard got the inning started by picking up a single on a ground ball hit to the short stop. With the speed Richardson showed it takes a hard-hit ground ball and clean play all around to throw him out. After reaching on the single he stole second and was able to advance to third on an overthrow. Andrew Dunford was then able to get the ball in play and drive Richardson home to tie the game up at three. The game would stay tied at three for the next four innings as Kelab Johnson and TJ Dunsford for East Coast would each pitch their way out of trouble and continue to hang zeros. In the bottom of the ninth Reid Harvey reached base on a catcher’s interference with one out, two batters later James Hays would draw a walk pushing the go ahead run to second base for Brady Neal. Wasting no time Neal would jump on the first pitch he saw and rope a ball to right field as Reid Harvey came into score the game winning run.

Top Tier Roos American 2023 found themselves in a hole early as the East Cobb Astros were able to put up two runs in the first by capitalizing on a lead off walk and a sharp single to right field to start off the innings. In the Roos half of the first they were able to capitalize on some early walks as they pushed the score back to 2-2. In the bottom of the second, Cristofer Walley gave his team a golden scoring opportunity by driving a ball deep over the center fielder for a triple with nobody out. After some good situational hitting Kodi Deskins grounded out and drove in Walley. With the score 6-8 in the fifth, Walley once again threw out an extra base hit. He would later come around and score to stretch the lead to 10-6 in favor of Top Tier after an error allowed two more runs to score. Top Tier used a few arms including Aiden Miller, Steven Milam, Cade Kurland, and Landen Maroudis, all of which battled to give their team a chance to win in the end. You have to give East Cobb credit though, they scrapped until the end before Landen Maroudis came in to pick up the save and lock up Top Tier’s spot in the 15U National Elite Championship game.

Unfortunately, as the championship game was starting weather blew into the area and the game as called off. I guess we will have to look forward to Atlanta where both teams will be headed to play in next week 15U WWBA tournament.

MVPitcher, Alexander Berinato finished the weekend with seven innings ten strikeouts, no runs and just one walk.
