Recruiting Notebook: April 6

Louis Rodriguez, rhp, Class of 2022
Commitment: San Diego

Rodriguez, who attends national powerhouse Orange Lutheran and is ranked No. 5 in the latest PG High School rankings, is the latest commit for the Toreros, a program that has had nice success on the trail as of late with Christian Grino and Kai Negrete, a teammate at OLu. A strongly built righthander, Rodriguez continues to see his velocity rise into the mid- to upper-80s, but that’s far from the whole picture in regard to his success on the mound. While the velocity stands out, it’s his ability to generate consistent and natural cutting life on the pitch while missing bats all around the strike zone that’s even more impressive. Rodriguez shows solid arm quickness and he maintains it well on the release of his slider which plays well off of his fastball, consistently working ahead in the count.

Outlook for the class: The 2022 class is still relatively small for USD compared to other programs around the country, working with four commits at present, all of whom call California home. Rodriguez checks in at No. 278 in the latest class of 2022 rankings, the highest of the four Torero commits, and he’s the type of arm who can lead a pitching staff down the line, already assembling an impressive resume of success on the diamond.

Caleb Logerwell, rhp, Class of 2021
Commitment: UCF

Prior to his commitment to the Knights, Longerwell ranked as one of the top uncommitted prospects in the country so locking him up is a big piece for UCF. Logerwell stands at a strong 6-foot-1, 190-pounds and has continued to progress into a primary arm while seeing his stuff uptick along the way. Listed as a primary third baseman throughout much of the summer where his arm strength plays plenty well and he shows looseness to his righthanded swing, the Georgia native saw his arsenal on the mound jump throughout the fall, peaking at 92 mph during the WWBA World Championship before bumping 94 mph during the 2020 PG High School Showdown. The one constant for Logerwell throughout has been the breaking ball, a true swing-and-miss offering with high spin and late, tight biting life to the bottom of the zone, a pitch that has proven to be a true difference maker.

Outlook for the class: The 2021 class is coming together nicely for UCF, now seven commits deep, and Logerwell serves as the first righthander in the class. As they typically do, the coaching staff has stayed primarily within the state, but being able to pull a talent like Logerwell from Georgia is a major win for a class that’s already shaping up to be a strong one.

Brendan Lysik, lhp, Class of 2021
Commitment: Texas Tech

It’s no secret that the Texas Tech staff will go whenever they need to in order to pick up high-end talent, so it’s not at all shocking that they left the state of Texas and went into New Jersey to lock up Lysik. A strong bodied lefthander, Lysik has made a big jump in terms of velocity since we last saw him at the 2019 Mid-Atlantic Prospect Showcase where he topped out at 84 mph, as reports now have him working comfortably in the upper-80s and touching a tick higher. Lysik already stands 6-foot-3 and has shown a nice feel for a pair of secondary pitches, giving him an arsenal that will make him an arm to follow throughout the summer and fall circuits.

Outlook for the class: As mentioned above, Tech isn’t afraid to go outside of their state despite the riches that lie within and of their six commits in 2021, three come from out-of-state. At No. 230 in the country the New Jersey native is the top-ranked prospect in the Red Raiders’ group and he’s one of three lefthanded arms already committed, joining a pair of righthanders, a clear emphasis of stocking up on arm talent.

Ty Southisene, ss, Class of 2024
Commitment: San Diego State

Southisene still has another year before he enters high school but the young shortstop out of Nevada already has his college commitment in hand, recently giving his verbal to the San Diego State staff. While he may not be the most physically imposing, Southisene’s defensive actions will go toe-to-toe with any in the country at his age, and even those a year or two older, as his internal clock and overall instincts are mightily advanced for the 14u level. The full array of defensive actions were on display at the 13u PG Select Festival, and while we can rave about his skills in the dirt, he’s no slouch with the stick either, recently winning the MVP at the 2020 14u Mountain West Championship. Like his approach on defense, there’s plenty of rhythm and balance to his operation at the plate, generating ample bat speed thanks to loose wrists while connecting for consistent barreled contact to all parts of the field.

Outlook for the class: Southisene is the lone commitment for the Aztecs at this point, though the staff has to be ecstatic as the first piece of the class is a top 10-ranked player. Checking in at No. 6 in the initial 2024 rankings, Southisene is the type of player a recruiting coordinator can easily build a class around given his aptitude on the diamond and top-of-the-order skillset in the box.

Elijha Hammill, ss, Class of 2021
Commitment: Utah

The Utes landed themselves a big commitment this past week, venturing into Ontario for one of the top-ranked players in Canada’s 2021 class in switch-hitting shortstop Elijha Hammill. He’s a well-built athlete with quick-twitch muscle to him, assets that aid him well both up the middle – where he should project to stay at the next level – as well as towards the top of the lineup, showing the same twitch both in his swing and on the basepaths. Offensively, there’s plenty of hand speed to his swing, particularly from the left side where he shows natural feel for the barrel and plenty of comfort turning on the ball with some authority. Whether he plays second base or shortstop, the athleticism and overall range will make themselves present as he moves well on his feet and possesses solid arm strength to complete the plays.

Outlook for the class: Hammill’s commitment is a big one for the Utah staff as he becomes their first commitment to rank within Perfect Game’s top 500, checking in at No. 225 in the most updated rankings. Similar to some of the other players mentioned above in regards to their respective classes, Hammill’s skillset and overall athleticism make him a key piece of this Utah 2021 class, especially when you project him to make an impact in the middle of the diamond.

Justin Crawford, of, Class of 2022
Commitment: Arizona

Though his commitment came two weeks back, Arizona landed a big-time commitment for their 2022 class in outfielder Justin Crawford, the son of long-time MLB outfielder Carl Crawford. A key target for recruiting coordinators on the circuit with the MLB Breakthrough club this past fall, Crawford’s game continues to develop at a rapid rate as he adds physical strength to his long and athletic 6-foot-2 frame. Crawford continues to show a natural feel for the barrel with his lefthanded swing, but now with the added strength we’ve begun to see him impact the ball to all parts of the field with plenty of reason to believe he’s far from hitting his ceiling. His foot speed is another impact tool and should serve him well upon his arrival in Tucson, covering plenty of ground for head coach Jay Johnson in the outfield.

Outlook for the class: Anytime a team can land a top 100 prospect it’s considered a big win and Crawford is the fourth such player with that lofty ranking, joining fellow Nevada resident Mason Neville along with infielders Mikey Romero and Ryan Ward who could solidify the left side of the infield for the Cats in the future. Overall, Crawford’s commitment is the ninth in the class of 2021 and interestingly is the fifth lefthanded bat of the seven position players currently committed to Arizona.

The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. Another week of Perfect Game baseball concluded as champions were crowned in the 15U, 16U, and 18U divisions of the Southwest Select Championship. After several days of pool play and championship bracket action, three teams rose above the competition to capture tournament titles following a week of high-level baseball. Throughout the tournament, teams from across the Southwest and beyond competed in closely contested matchups, producing standout pitching performances, timely offense, and memorable defensive plays. Tyler Osmanski (2027, Frankfort, Ill.) a 5-foot-11 160-pound right-handed pitcher worked a 7 inning complete game shutout to start off Chicago Elite’s 6-0 weekend. On top of going the distance he allowed only three base runners and one hit. Osmanski has lots of athleticism in his delivery. He keeps his body under control while still being able to have good arm action and great hip to shoulder separation. He works from the third base side of the rubber with a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball was up to 84mph multiple times and sat 80-83mph. He used two offspeed pitches, a good 12-6 breaking ball 65-68mph, and a changeup in the low 70’s.     ‘27 RHP Brett Alkire (IL) punched out everyone across his 5.2 inning masterful outing. Ranked fifth nationally entering the tournament, Florida Burn 2027 Scout left no doubt who the best team was at the 17U BCS National Championship. Burn finished a perfect 9-0 tournament, earning an 11-1 semifinal victory before defeating No. 86-ranked Original Florida Pokers 2027 National, 9-1, Tuesday afternoon at JetBlue Park. Burn seized control early and never looked back in a game that ended after the fifth inning per Perfect Game’s mercy rule. Burn carried its explosive offense into the championship game as Braedon Mackay launched a two-run home run in the first inning, giving his team an early 2-0 lead. Mackay’s home run sparked a five-run opening inning, setting the tone for the rest of the afternoon. 17u BCS Scout Notes: Day 1 Kenniel Nieves Medero (2027 SS, PR)  Nieves Medero put together another quality offensive showing, continuing the consistent production he displayed throughout the tournament. The 8.5 PG grade shortstop features quick hands and does an excellent job creating separation with strong hip rotation, allowing him to generate easy bat speed through the zone. Jack Soete (2028, Houston, Texas) had a big weekend for HP 2028 Woods. Went 4-9 at the plate with two doubles and a home run. Strong approach at the top of the order as well, drawing five walks. Closed stance with an athletic, projectable frame. Gains ground on the stride and stays on plane with his swing. Bat-to-ball ability is present and power should continue to develop. With the completion of the 2026 13u National Showcase, an event that featured some of the best talent the age group has to offer, 42 players came out with the label of "Festivaler" as they received a phone call shortly after the event concluded. Moving back to the University of Tennessee after a two year stay at the University of Virginia, Ole Rocky Top will see a mixed bag of returners; three-timers, new faces and a couple who bridged the gap from the 11u game into the 13u iteration.  Of the 42 players, 9 players call Florida their home base which is the most of any state while Texas (8), California (7) and Georgia (5) are all close behind nearly three-quarters of the players selected. Jack Postma (2028, Barrington, IL) made an impression in Chicago this week. A 6-foot-5 right hander with a starter pitch mix. Topped out at 93 in his outing at UBC Midwest and pitched at 88-93 for 2 innings on the mound. Slider showed late horizontal bite at its best when finished out front.
