D-II, NAIA, D-III Rankings: Feb. 26

With the third in-season update of the year each of the three teams which started the season ranked No. 1 remain in their positions. However, their respective grasps on the top spot are extremely dissimilar.

In D-II Angelo State has left little doubt they are the team to beat as they started the season with 16 straight wins. They finally lost a game last weekend when a bad inning derailed their unbeaten streak. The ASU offense has been spectacular as they are slugging .620 as team with 51 doubles and 27 home runs in only 18 games. They are even dangerous on the basepaths as they have amassed 48 stolen bases. On the mound their 4.81 ERA is a bit robust, but they have struck out 196 batters in 146 innings and are holding opposition to a .265 average and have only issued 46 walks.

The only knock against the Rams is that they haven’t faced a single ranked opponent this season and in all likelihood may not until they reach regional play. Nevertheless, the Lone Star Conference does provide solid competition which should have them ready for the extended postseason.

Freed-Hardeman remains the top team in the rankings in the NAIA, however they haven’t been the best team. That distinction would go to Southeastern who holds an 18-1 record at week’s end with wins over Georgia Gwinnett and Madonna. Additionally, the Fire are batting over .380 as a team with 57 home runs and their pitching staff has a 3.90 ERA while holding opposition to a .219 batting average. FHU has a very, very good 14-2 record, but they haven’t been putting much distance between themselves and opposition. They’ve had five wins by either one or two runs and another that took extra innings.

They haven’t played a ranked team yet (they do play Lyon and Faulkner at the end of the month) and are only batting .262 as a team, well over .100 points less than SEU. Their pitching staff has been particularly impressive however as their team ERA is 2.59 and are holding opposing teams to a .181 batting average. Freed is unquestionably one of the top teams in the land, but their top ranking is still partially based on potential than performance. Their leading hitter Josh Sears is just beginning to warm up and the club is full of veterans who’ll help power them into the postseason.

In the D-III realm, Webster has not performed like the best club in the division. At 3-2 they could very easily be under .500 as two of their wins required extra innings. They were tied with a very good Concordia-Chicago team before weather halted the contest on Sunday, but the Cougars have lost some of their luster as well after starting 0-2. Three factors are keeping the Worlocks in the No. 1 position for now.

Firstly, their potential. Webster was one of the top teams last season and much of the roster returned this spring. Every pitcher who threw at least 10 innings last season is back along with much of the starting lineup – the Gorlocks are very good.

Secondly, Webster is not playing as poorly as their record shows. The offense is batting .273, which, while it won’t turn any heads, isn’t too shabby. Their power game is down, way down, but it could take some time for their St. Louis based bats to warm up. Their pitching has been excellent. As a team they had a 1.00 ERA through the first four games and limited opposing teams to a .235 average. Of the 13 runs scored against them, only six were earned runs. If Webster cleans up their defense (nine errors in their first five games) they should have better results in the box score.

The third reason Webster remains the No. 1 team is no one else has really proven themselves to be deserving of the position. Second-ranked UW Whitewater has only played three games, previously positioned No. 3 Wooster only one and other potential candidates such as Cortland, Birmingham Southern, Trinity (Texas) and Chapman went a combined 2-9 last week.

If the D-III rankings were based on on-the-field action alone, the best team so far may be Randolph-Macon. The Yellow Jackets have started the season with an 11-1 record with notable wins over Rhodes (unofficially the 26th team in the rankings), preseason No. 4 school Cortland State, Christopher Newport (who led D-III in slugging percentage last season) and swept three games from previously 25th-ranked TCNJ last weekend. R-MC moved into the top 10 this week after starting the season positioned 20th nationally.

Below are how the rest of the rankings shape up entering the first week of March.

Rankings are based on games through Sunday, March 1.

NCAA Division II

1. Angelo State Rams (17-1) – The Rams ran their winning season opening winning streak to 16 games before finally being besting in a game. Last weekend ASU won three of four against West Texas A&M in a tightly contested series as the Rams earned two of their wins via extra-inning walk-offs. The Rams are batting .371 as a team and continue to be led by senior Josh Elvir who has a gargantuan 1.771 slugging percentage.

2. Central Missouri Mules (14-3) – The Mules hosted Rogers State and swept three games from the Hillcats. Dusty Stroup, who transferred from MIAA rival Missouri Western, has been brilliant for UCM. He currently has a twelve-game hitting streak and is batting .446 with 14 extra-base hits.

3. Catawba Indians (15-2) – The Indians continue to be in a bee in the bonnet of North Greenville, the team they eliminated to advance to the D-II Baseball Championships last season. Catawba earned a midweek win over the Crusaders which resulted in the two teams switching positions in the rankings. The Indians also swept three games at Queens in Charlotte.

4. North Greenville Crusaders (16-3-1) – The Crusaders were unable to get revenge on the team which eliminated them from the postseason last year as fellow top-five team Catawba, came from behind to defeat NGU. Over the weekend the Crusaders swept three games from Emmanuel. Ryan Kirk has been phenomenal out of the bullpen. In 14 innings over eight appearances Kirk has yet to allow an earned run, only given up four hits and has three wins and three saves.

5. Mount Olive Trojans (15-2) – The Trojans outscored Chowan 31-5 in a three-game sweep. UMO will be tested mightily this week with midweek matchups against a pair of ranked opponents in Catawba and Newberry.

6. Georgia College Bobcats (11-1) – The Bobcats had an incredible week and climb three spots in the rankings after earning a road sweep over North Georgia. To complete the series GC’ hitters mashed five home runs in route to a lopsided 13-1 victory. Cassius Young has earned multiple hits in nine of the last 10 games he’s played in, which includes going 8-for-14 against the Nighthawks.

7. Minnesota State Mavericks (2-2) – The Mavericks had the week off as they prepare for an extended spring break trip to Florida in which they will play nine games in eight days.

8. Tampa Spartans (11-5) – The Spartans made the short trip down I-275 to earn a win over Eckerd midweek and won two of three close games over Florida Tech at home. After hosting Seton Hill Monday, Tampa will head up to Georgia and play a series at Albany State.

9. Colorado Mesa Mavericks (10-4) – The Mavericks inexplicitly lost the first two games in their home series with Minot State before rebounding to split the series. The series finale took four hours as the teams combined to tally 35 hits and 28 runs. Also, in the last game sophomore outfielder Tanner Garner stole six bases.

10. UC San Diego Tritons (13-4) – UCSD won the first three games of their series with San Francisco State but couldn’t complete the sweep. The loss in the finale was their first in 10 home games this season.

11. Augustana Vikings (7-4) – The Vikings scored 34 runs in their three-game road sweep of Southwest Baptist. Jordan Barth finished the series going 8-for-12 and has a hit in each of Augustana’s 11 games this season.

12. Azusa Pacific Cougars (8-8) – It looked like the Cougars’ slow start would continue as they lost the first game of their Hawaii trip to Hawaii Pacific, but APU finally turned things around and won the next three by outscoring the Sharks 41-11 to finally even their record. Osvaldo Tovalin, who hit .396 with 19 home runs last season, is homerless and batting a pedestrian .276.

13. North Georgia (10-5) – The Nighthawks ran into the Georgia College buzz saw and lost each of their three games to the Bobcats. Aside from the final game, the other two contests were tight with the opener going to extra-innings and the finale being decided by one run.

14. Columbus State Cougars (14-3) – The Cougars pounced on Montevallo and dropped the Falcons 9-1 midweek before sweeping Lander over the weekend. Over CSU’s current seven-game winning streak their pitchers have held opposition to a .226 batting average and earned a team 1.29 ERA.

15. Bellarmine Knights (5-4) – The Knights had the week off. This week they will play Lee and Quincy on the road.

16. Southern New Hampshire Penmen (8-3) The Penmen remain undefeated since their disappointing sweep at the hands of Colorado Mesa to start the season. Last week they played on the road against previously 16th-ranked NYIT and won each of their three games over the Bears.

17. Dixie State Trailblazers (11-3) – Dixie State had the week off from competitive play. They will host Adams State this week in a four-game series.

18. Newberry Wolves (15-4) – The Wolves were edged by Lander midweek but did sweep Lincoln Memorial in an important SAC series. The Wolves’ offense has been rather woeful, but their pitching staff has been overpowering. Thomas Sorcia Jr. and Quniton Driggers have combined to strikeout 72 batters in 52 1/3 innings while only allowing 33 hits.

19. East Stroudsburg Warriors (9-1) – The Warriors were to have played Jefferson and IUP, but their games against the Rams and Crimson Hawks were postponed. This week ESU is to host IUP and Bloomfield.

20. Delta State Statesmen (10-7) – The Statemen had a rare winless week, as they not only were defeated by Henderson State midweek, but they also they also were swept in Pensacola by West Florida. DSU will be looking to get on track this week against Southern Arkansas and Auburn-Montgomery.

21. Ashland Eagles (5-1) – The Eagles make a small move up in the rankings after sweeping three games on the road over Southern Indiana. The Eagles will head to the Russ Matt Invitational in central Florida where they will play eight games in eight days.

22. Davenport Panthers (10-2) – The Panthers lost a midweek game last to the UMSL Tritons, but did convincing sweep four games from Maryville while in St. Louis. DU outscored the Saints 51-10 and currently have four regulars batting over .400, topped by Jacob Buchberger, who is hitting .510 with 10 extra-base hits and only three strikeouts.

23. Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars (8-2) – UIS thumped Purdue Northwest by a combined score of 45-11. Five of Zion Pettigrew’s 15 hits this season have been home runs and he is leading the team with a .395 batting average.

24. NYIT Bears (4-4) – The Bears had an opportunity to impress and make a substantial move in the rankings, but instead were swept in three games at home to Southern New Hampshire in which they only scored four runs. An April midweek game against East Stroudsburg is NYIT’s only remaining game against a team currently in the rankings. As such the Bears will have to impress with quantity rather than quality of wins if they are to remain in the Top 25.

25. Southern Arkansas Muleriders (15-3) – Following a midweek win over Mississippi College and winning two of three over Northwestern Oklahoma State, the Muleriders replace Arkansas-Monticello as the GAC’s representative in the Top 25. Zach Smith has been phenomenal this season on the mound with a 0.81 ERA in five appearances. In those outings he had totaled 33 1/3 innings while only allowing 17 hits (.145 opponent batting average) with 33 strikeouts.

Dropped out: Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils (7-9) – Considering the amount of talent the Weevils returned from last season’s successful club, their sub .500 start to the season is inexplicable. UAM lost two of three to Southwest Oklahoma State last weekend to get removed from the rankings.

NAIA

1. Freed-Hardeman Lions (14-2) – The Lions soundly swept Harris-Stowe State and remain in the No. 1 position. After a slow start All American Josh Sears is finally beginning to heat up and went 9-for-17 over the last four games with four walks and five extra-base hits.

2. Southeastern Fire (18-1) – The Fire continued to dominate on the diamond with five more lopsided wins. SEU earned a win over Mount Vernon Nazarene, swept three games from Ave Maria and pounded Madonna 16-7 Sunday in a match-up of ranked teams.

3. St. Thomas Bobcats (13-3) – The Bobcats had a pair of midweek games in which they split with Ave Maria (an 18-16 win) and D-II’s Nova Southeastern (a 7-11 loss). Over the weekend STU had little trouble outscoring Warner as they swept the Royals by outscoring them 28-5.

4. Science and Arts Drovers (13-1) – The Drovers swept their series with Mid-America Christian, but the games were closer than anticipated with two of the contests being decided by a single run thanks to late rallies by the Evangels. Matt Merrill and Colton Williams have 0.75 and 1.19 ERAs respectively and have struck out 76 batters in 46 2/3 innings while only allowing 20 hits.

5. LSU Shreveport Pilots (15-3) – The Pilots offense put on a show against Jarvis Christian as they scored double digits in each of their games. Nevertheless, the Bulldogs were pretty potent as well and scored 32 runs in the three contests as well. LSUS took the series two games to one.

6. Faulkner Eagles (15-4) – The Eagles swept a doubleheader from Talladega, but struggled against William Carey, who, even following taking two of three from Faulkner, are under .500 on the season. The Eagles will look to get back to their winning ways this week with two more games against Talladega and a series with Blue Mountain.

7. Cumberlands Patriots (17-1) – The Patriots ran their season starting winning streak to 17 games before falling to Huntington in seven innings in the finale of their series. While much deserved praise should be piled on Bryan Leef with his .365 average and .889 slugging percentage, the Pats’ pitching has been especially dominant as they have a team 2.98 ERA and are holding opposition to a .211 batting average.

8. Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs (11-4) – Like Faulkner, the Bulldogs were stymied by a sub-.500 team as Truett McConnell, who won two of three over the defending national champions. TWU will look to rebound against stiff competition this week as they play an always tough Reinhardt team and a surging Point squad on the road.

9. Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies (18-2) – The Grizzlies enter the top 10 following a win over Reinhardt and sweep of Northwestern Ohio. GGC will be riding a 17-game winning streak into a tournament with Lourdes, Talladega, Viterbo and Cumberlands this week.

10. Bryan Lions (13-2) – The Lions had a game against Lindsey Wilson canceled and upped their win total to an unlucky 13 following a series sweep over visiting Kentucky Christian.

11. Oklahoma City Stars (11-7) – The Stars’ staff threw a pair of shutouts over Bacone to help propel OCU to a series sweep. During the wins Tyler Williams added a pair of home runs to put him at 10 for the season.

12. Benedictine Mesa Redhawks (18-5) – The Redhawks made one of the biggest upward moves in the Top 25 after earning a win over Ottawa and two more against Marymount California in which they outscored the Mariners 15-2. After hosting Mount Marty midweek ACU will welcome Antelope Valley in a key Cal Pac series.

13. Central Methodist Eagles (14-3) – The Eagles made a jump after an impressive week in which they easily handled both Graceland and Peru State in doubleheaders. CMU scored a total of 51 runs in the contests. Mason Schwellenback went 7-for-10 with a pair of home runs at the plate and held Peru State to three hits in six innings on the mound over the weekend.

14. Indiana Southeast Grenadiers (12-0) – The Grenadiers are the only remaining undefeated team as they earned a win over Cumberland and swept WVU Tech. IU Southeast’s bullpen has dominated with pitcher like Brenden Bube who has only allowed a single hit in seven innings and Jacob Frankel who has 18 strikeouts in just 8 1/3 innings.

15. Arizona Christian Firestorm (16-7) – The Firestorm easily outpaced Park-Gilbert midweek but were extinguished in three of four on the road to William Jessup in which they were shutout twice and only scored a pair of runs in the other loss. ACU returns home to host Ottawa (AZ) this week.

16. Campbellsville Tigers (11-5) – The Tigers lost a game to Madonna and won two over Roosevelt. This will be CU’s week to show their moxie as they host a pair of ranked teams who are a combined 29-1 in Cumberlands and IU Southeast.

17. Texas Wesleyan Rams (15-9) – Texas Wesleyan started last week with a pair of 10-run wins and a 6-0 shutout, but lost the finale of their series with Southwestern Christian and a Sunday matinee with Texas A&M Texarkana. The Rams have a huge series with a resurgent Oklahoma City squad this week.

18. Lyon Scots (15-4) – The Scots have made a move up each week and enter the top 20 after splitting two close contests with Blue Mountain and easily sweeping Hannibal-LaGrange. The Scots have the week off before returning to action against non-NAIA school Arlington Baptist.

19. Madonna Crusaders (13-5) – Madonna picked up a nice win over Campbellsville but were doubled up by Roosevelt 2-4 and manhandled by Southeastern 7-16. The Crusaders have single games against Robert Morris and Spring Arbor on this week’s schedule.

20. Georgetown Tigers (8-6) – The Tigers rallied in the ninth to take the lead over Asbury, but the Eagles won the game in the bottom of the ninth to continue the Tigers’ lackluster start. GC did rebound to win a pair of games over Lourdes, but much stronger performances will be needed to keep them listed among the elite.

21. Bellevue Bruins (6-7) – The underachieving Bruins had their first winning week of the season as they easily outscored Mount Vernon Nazarene and took both ends of a doubleheader from Siena Heights. BU has a big Florida trip upcoming with games against the ilk of St. Thomas, Webber International and Warner.

22. Concordia (MI) Cardinals (10-2) – The Cardinals swept four games from Shawnee State, which included a shutout and 21-7 mauling. Concordia should add a quartet of wins this week as they play Roosevelt who is batting .204 as a team with a 9.11 ERA.

23. Taylor Trojans (10-2) – The Trojans had the week off. They’ll return to action this week with games against Defiance College and Goshen.

24. Concordia (NE) (8-2) – After a week off the Bulldogs returned to action with an easy sweep of Waldorf which included a pair of 10-0 shutouts. Concordia will play a doubleheader against Baker midweek before playing Morningside.

25. Mobile Rams (16-4) – The Ram’ series with Bethel was much closer than anticipated with Mobile needing extra innings to win the first game, getting a shutout win in the second and losing the finale late.

NCAA Division III

1. Webster Gorlocks (3-2) – The Gorlocks got back on the sunny side of .500 following a 11-1 mercy-rule win over North Park and slim 4-3 extra-inning win against Wisconsin-Oshkosh. California All Region & Top Tools

The 2026 class is one of the best in recent memory for the state of California, with 18 players ranking among the top 100 in the Perfect Game national rankings.  Three PG All-Americans, IF Trey Ebel, OF Isaiah Hearn and RHP Logan Georges were all edged out of places on the California All-Region Team as a result.  And although the 2027 class doesn’t look as deep, it does feature three Top Six players in SS Dylan Seward, LHP Jared Grindlinger and SS Carter Hadnot. Not surprisingly, California high schools are very well represented in the Perfect Game Pre-Season Top 50 rankings, particularly with 2025 Trinity League champion St. John Bosco beginning the season as the top ranked team in the country.  A very deep Orange Lutheran squad holds down the third spot in the rankings, with 12th ranked De La Salle being the top team from Northern California.  Corona (17th),...

PG Draft: Mid-Major Picks to Click

Tyler Henninger

While Power 4 prospects tend to soak up the bulk of the industry buzz, there’s plenty of legitimate talent lurking at the mid-major level. These are competitive programs that are loaded with players who have real tools, physicality, and performance track records that translate beyond their conference. Below are nine mid-major prospects we expect evaluators to be in early and often on this spring. Ethan Norby, LHP, East Carolina (Rank: 155) Norby is an undersized left-hander, but has produced strong numbers over two years at ECU. The left-hander has produced a 3.80 ERA with 182 strikeouts over 149 1/3 innings. While the velocity does not stand out, Norby can still miss bats with the heater. It works in the low-90’s and creeps towards 95 mph at times. Quality extension for his size and high spin allow that offering to get on hitters, resulting in weak contact as well as whiffs....

Georgia HS All Region & Top Tools

David Rawnsley

Georgia has its usual depth of high-level athletes and Perfect Game All-Americans, although three 2027 players did make the All-Region team.  There are an unusual number of two-way prospects among the All-Region players, a testament to the big arms that the state has right now. Two Georgia high schools are ranked in the top 10 of the PG Pre-Season High School Top 50 rankings and the Georgia high school ranks are annually among the most competitive in the country.  Etowah is the highest ranked team at 5th overall, while Blessed Trinity Catholic checks in at 8th.  Parkview is the only other Georgia team in the top 50, holding down the 34th spot.   OF-RHP Dexter McCleon Jr will be fixture on the Georgia All-Region team for the next two years but the top ranked prospect in the 2028 class will have to take a back seat to his elders this year.  McCleon’s absurd...

Baseball Meets Hollywood For Great Cause

BASEBALL MEETS HOLLYWOOD FOR A GREAT CAUSE    There’s no crying in baseball, but there is laughing, and there was lots and lots of it -- for a great cause -- last Saturday night in Hollywood, California. Perfect Game and its Believe in Baseball Foundation assembled a star-studded cast of comics and guests for the inaugural “In the Spirit of the Game” dinner and auction. The event was held at the iconic Laugh Factory, a historic venue that, in baseball terms, would be equivalent to Dodger Stadium or Wrigley Field. Late-night superstar Jay Leno took a turn on stage. So did comedic aces Tiffany Haddish, Nikki Glaser, Dustin Ybarra and Gary Cannon. “It was 4 ½ hours of straight laughter,” said PG commissioner Dennis Gilbert, still beaming a couple of days later. “It was a really nice success.” No one kept score at the event, but...
