2019 WWBA 16u Prospect Meadows National Championship: Day 1 Scout Notes

Braxton Greenburg (2021, Plymouth, Minn.) had a strong day at the plate on Saturday, going 2-for-2 with a double and pair of RBI. Greenburg has a tall and slender frame with plenty of room to fill out and add strength, and his present athleticism in center field allows him to cover a ton of ground in the outfield. Greenburg’s arm strength makes him an all-around defender, and the powers numbers will only help add power numbers to what is an already sound approach at the plate.

Cameron Jones (2020, Chicago, Ill.) was another player to put together a strong offensive performance on Saturday. Jones finished Saturday’s action going 3-for-4, highlighted by a loud triple to the deepest part of the park in center field. Jones, who is an uncommitted member of the 2020 class, has a medium frame with room to fill out and add strength, and he moves well with impressive range to the glove side on defense. A primary third baseman, Jones has the physical profile to become a good corner infielder at the next level, and his present bat-to-ball skills make him an interesting name to keep an eye on.

The GRB Rays Yellow have had a solid defense-first shortstop this week in Mason Kirchberg (2021, DeForest, Wis.). Kirchberg was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI in the game Saturday, and he has been able to flash an impressive glove throughout the entire tournament. Kirchberg has a 5-foot-11, 190-pound frame, and the primary shortstop has shown the ability to make strong and accurate throws from multiple slots. Kirchberg moves well up the middle and his quick hands and high-contact approach at the plate make him an interesting option at the top of any lineup.

Zach Dantuono (2021, Chesterfield, Mo.) was one of the more interesting arms to take the mound during Saturday’s action. Dantuono was able to showcase his fastball exclusively in his start, sitting in the low-80s and pitching to both halves of the plate. Though Dantuono struggled at times to command the strike zone, the righty has some present athleticism that allows him to get down the mound and attack hitters down in the zone. When in the strike zone, Dantuono does a great job of forcing early and soft contact.

Cooper Mollet (2021, Edina, Minn.) put together one of the most impressive two-day performances of Saturday and Sunday’s action, grabbing a win on the mound and doing all sorts of damage at the plate. After a strong two days, Mollet now has a home run and four RBI for his team. On the mound, the athletic Mollet sat in the low-80s, topping out at 83 mph with a dominant fastball. Mollet has some present athleticism on the mound and his short and compact arm stroke creates some deception to hitters. At the plate, Mollet has a smooth swing and quick hands that allow him to drive the baseball with authority.

Josh Notriano (2021, Johnsburg, Ill.) was yet another hitter from the Pro Player Canes – Matsie to put together a strong performance at the plate this tournament. Notriano went 2-for-2 with a double and a pair of RBI on Sunday, highlighted by a deep drive to the corner in right field during his first at-bat. Notriano has a physical frame at 6-foot-1, 185-pounds, and the primary third baseman also used his athleticism to play a strong left field. Notriano has a smooth swing with some present bat speed from the left side of the plate and the uncommitted 2021 has the tools and physical presence to develop nicely in the corner outfield at the next level.

Ryan Weaver (2021, Cary, Ill.) also put together a solid Sunday for the Canes on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with a double, walk, and three RBI. Weaver has a high-contact approach from the left side of the plate and his present bat speed and direct hand path leads to consistently hard contact at the plate. Finding a way to get on base three times Sunday, Weaver is a good player to have at the top of any order, and the uncommitted member of the 2021 class could develop into a really good option at the next level.

Elliot Krewson (2021, Chesterfield, Mo.) impressed all day Sunday, going a combined 4-for-8 with an RBI over his two games. Krewson is a hard-nosed ballplayer that provides a spark at the top of the order, and the kid can flat out play. Undersized to some, Krewson gets the most out of his 5-foot-9, 140-pound frame, consistently driving balls on a line to all fields. Krewsom was solid defensively at both second base and shortstop on Sunday and his developing arm strength and quick feet make him a solid second base option at the next level.

The other middle infielder to make an impact for the St. Louis Pirates on Sunday was Jacob Steele (2021, St. Peters, Mo.). Steele put together his best offensive performance in game two, going 2-for-3 with a loud triple to wall in right field. Steele, who is a top 500 player in the class of 2021, is a primary shortstop with advanced glove skills and some present athleticism. Steele made a couple of really nice, diving plays on Sunday and his defensive prowess is something that will serve him well at the next level.

Ryan Smith (2021, Westchester, Ill.) is an interesting uncommitted arm that took the mound Sunday as the athletic righthander showed a lot of things to really like moving forward. Smith sat at 80-84 mph with a lively fastball in his start, topping at 86 mph on multiple occasions. Smith has developing feel for a curveball with 11-to-5 shape and late depth at 68-70 mph. Smith does a great job of attacking hitters and mixing speeds effectively, and the short and compact arm stroke provides some deception that made hitters uncomfortable at times. Smith has an athletic frame with plenty of room to fill out and add strength and it will be interesting to see him develop into an even more polished pitcher as his career continues.

Getting the start on the mound for Cangelosi Sparks 2021 Black was Michael Bernas (2021, Orland Park, Ill.) The strong lefty worked four innings while only allowing two hits and striking out six. The Illinois native displayed a two-pitch mix with advanced pitchability throwing both pitches for strikes consistently in any count. Bernas showed a fastball with late run up to 81 mph complemented by a 1-to-7 curveball with good depth and sharp break creating a lot of swing-and-miss.

Ryan O'Neil (2021, Lockport, Ill.) displayed impressive pull-side power this weekend connecting for a loud double down the left field line. The 2021 grad features a quick, compact swing with fast hands creating good bat speed to the baseball and getting extended well through the baseball.

University of Illinois commit Camden Janik (2021, Wauconda, Ill.) has enjoyed an impressive weekend at the plate. Janik has collected extra-base hits in every game besides one on the weekend. Camden features an athletic swing with a short hand path to the baseball. He showed the ability to create good bat speed to and through the baseball with impressive gap-to-gap power. Janik also displayed present over-the-fence pop off the barrel with a loud home run followed up by a triple into the gap.

Jake King (2021 Buckeye, Ariz.) did not have his best control on Saturday night but only allowed one hit in his two innings of work while striking out three batters. The strong righty showed some funk in the delivery throwing from a lower three-quarters arm slot with good arm speed. He creates a lot of deception to the plate hiding the ball well while flashing a fastball with some feel for the zone up to 84 mph and a sweeping breaking ball at 70 mph.

Jack Kruger (2021 Belle Plaine, Minn.) worked 3 2/3 innings of hitless baseball for the MN Starters 16u on Sunday. The projectable righty showed a long, loose arm action with interesting arm speed. He displayed good pitchability as well throwing two pitches in the zone in any count. The 2021 grad features a fastball with a steep downhill plane up to 84 mph complemented with a sharper breaking ball thrown for consistent strikes and creating swing-and-miss up to 67 mph.

Alonzo Macdonald (2021, Leslie, Mo.), the leadoff hitter for the St. Louis Pirates 2021, showed impressive jump off the barrel with an RBI double into the right-center field gap. The 2021 grad features a quiet, compact swing getting good extension through the baseball creating good barrel whip out front. Macdonald also showed his athleticism in the outfield making multiple impressive plays with the glove.

Getting the ball Sunday for Rawlings Xtreme was Kaden Jacobi (2021, O’Fallon, Mo.) Jacobi worked 4 1/3 innings scattering four hits and striking out six. The physical righty showed good arm speed in a high intent delivery with athletic actions while working down the hill. The 2021 grad features an interesting two-pitch mix working largely off the heavy fastball up to 87 mph thrown consistently up in the zone creating a lot of empty barrels complemented by an 11-to-5 breaking ball at 74 mph.

Ryan Shimp (2021,Yorkville, Ill.) was impressive on the mound Sunday for Cangeosi Sparks 2021 Black working 5 1/3 shutout innings while only allowing two hits and fanning three batters. The lanky righty showed an athletic delivery getting extended out front well creating some deception to the batters. Shimp features a fastball with good downhill plane and feel for the zone up to 81 mph, complemented by an 11-to-5 breaking ball with good depth.

‘27 IF Braylon Sheffield (FL) with an absolute 🚀 here, launching high off the RCF wall for a 3B. Super polished LH stick; hit over .400 last year on the circuit. #GoHoos commit. #EastMemorial pic.twitter.com/mdehqpR5v5 — Perfect Game Florida (@Florida_PG) May 23, 2026 Braylon Sheffield (2027, Fort Myers, Fla.) got the event started with the loudest swing of the night on Friday at Terry Park, rocketing a triple off the wall in the stadium. Sheffield, ranked 121 and committed to Virginia, is a super polished left-handed hitter with left side of the infield projection long term. The swing is tension-free with loose wrists and he generates easy bat speed with already present power to the pull side. This blast came inches away from being a home run and hitting a ball that far at Terry Park stadium is a significant shot. Sheffield also tripled in his second game of the weekend at...

The Insidious Lie That Hurts Pitchers Thep Most How many of you have ever had a terrible outing and afterward couldn’t really explain what went wrong? And how many of you have ever had a great outing and couldn’t explain what you did differently either? That gap between what is happening and your awareness of what is happening may be one of the most important gaps in player development. Closing that gap has a name. It is called metacognition. In simple terms, metacognition means thinking about your thinking. It is the ability to understand how you learn, how you perform, how you respond under pressure, and how you make adjustments when things are not going your way. For a pitcher, that matters because no matter how good your coach is, he cannot stand on the mound with you. Your coach cannot take the ball with the bases loaded, two outs, and the best hitter in the league...

DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: May 20

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
There is a reason the preseason pick to win it all rarely does. College baseball's postseason is a gauntlet — double elimination, best-of-three’s, then a full World Series format — and the team that looks unbeatable in February has to prove it again in May against opponents who have had just as long to get ready. Plenty of programs have entered the tournament as the obvious favorite and gone home early. It happens every year. Nobody should be shocked when it does. Top-ranked teams flaming out in regional weekends happens so many times it has become its own genre of schadenfreude Which makes this particular moment worth noting. The Perfect Game preseason picks to win the NAIA, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III national titles — Tennessee Wesleyan, UT Tyler, and the University of Lynchburg — are all still alive heading into the final rounds. All three...

Coppy's Corner: May 21 POY Deep Dive

John Coppolella
Article Image
Each week I huddle with Vinnie Cervino and Craig Cozart  to discuss Top-25 rankings and Players of the Week. In Coppy’s Corner, I dive deeper into these Players of the Week, providing analysis from 20+ years working in baseball front offices at the highest level.   Co-Player of the Week: Carson Tinney – University of Texas  As a Notre Dame alumnus, it pained me to see Tinney transfer from the Golden Dome to the University of Texas after an All-American sophomore season for the Irish. He’s picked up in Austin right where he left off in South Bend and is currently hitting .321 AVG, 20 HR, .475 OBP / .695 SLG / 1.170 OPS on the 2026 season. It’s plus right-handed power and a plus arm; with the numbers I have found indicating that Tinney has erased more than half of attempted base stealers over the past two seasons of college baseball. Tinney threw...

Best of the Best Event Preview

Jheremy Brown
Article Image
In simplistic terms, the Best of The Best tournament is an absolute gauntlet as seemingly every game brings a playoff game atmosphere. Coaches must strategically map out their pitching to ensure they can get through Pool Play while also making sure they have arms to make a deep playoff run. Each and every age group is loaded with the best teams, composed of some of the best players that travel baseball has to offer. The 9u & 10u age groups will respectively have 9 out of the Top 10 Teams within the latest PG National Team Rankings participating in the event. At 9U, LTP-Reign will look to hold on to their #1 ranking but will have plenty of competition with the likes of ZT National Prospects and HTX-Wildcatters 9U looking to take over that #1 spot. In the 10u age group, Elevate National will look to fend off plenty of talent with #2 ranked Kaos National, East Cobb Astros and ZT...

May 19th Perfect Game/Co-Players of the Week:  Carson Tinney, C, Texas  The Texas Longhorns just finished off another stellar regular season and are heading to Hoover for the SEC Conference Tournament as the No. 2 Seed this week.  To secure their 2nd place finish, they had to sweep Missouri at home last weekend and did so in large part to the power bat of Carson Tinney.  The 6-4/240 catcher from Castle Pines, CO transferred to Austin after two sensational seasons at Notre Dame and has thrived in his draft year.  In the 3-game set, Tinney collected 7 hits in 13 at-bats, scoring 5 runs, with a double, 3 home runs and he drove in 10 runs all told.  With some of the most prodigious power in the college game this year, Tinney is now slashing .321/.695/.473 with 10 doubles an incredible 20 home runs and 54 RBIs while playing in the most spacious ballpark in the...

The regular season is behind us, and it is now tournament time and wow, is there a lot to still be decided.  We are a week away from the Field of 64 being announced and hosting opportunities, at-large bids, as well as automatic bids are there for the taking.  The UCLA Bruins (48-6) continue their stranglehold on the No. 1 spot in the land, finishing the regular season without losing a series all year.  ACC powers, UNC (43-10) and Georgia Tech (45-9) remain at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively and SEC regular season champs, the Georgia Bulldogs (43-12) stick at No. 4.  After that there was a small amount of shuffling within the Top 10 with No. 5 Texas (40-12), No. 6 West Virginia (37-13) and No. 7 FSU (38-16) moving ahead of now No. 8 Auburn (36-18) after they were the only team in this group to drop their weekend series.   No. 14 Florida (37-18) and No. 15...
