13u PG Series: Day 2-3 Quick Hits

13u PG Series Classic Quick Hits: Day 1

On Tuesday, Miles Birke (2023, Webster Groves, Mo.) started behind the dish for Midwest and shinned at the plate. Birke went 2-for-2 with two doubles, driving in two runs, and scoring once. Birke stands in the righthanded batters box and makes a presence standing at 5-foot-10, 200-pounds. Birke has a large frame and shows of good athleticism behind the plate blocking balls with ease. He has good pop to all fields as he just missed a home run to left and also hit one to deep right=center. Birke is an exciting player to watch and we will see what he can do the rest of the week.

The leadoff hitter for the North team on Tuesday was center fielder Oliver Service (2023, Detroit, Mich.). Service showed some serious athleticism on the ball field as he was running balls down easy in center and swing the bat well at the plate. Service drove a ball to deep right-center field and he flew around the bases for an easy standup triple. He has a very athletic frame standing at 5-foot-8, 145-pounds and has good talent. Service has quick hands through the zone and looks to do damage early in counts. Service went 1-for-3 for an RBI and a run scored.

Gabriel Viera (2023, Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) started at shortstop for Puerto Rico Red and had himself a day on the second day of the event. Viera went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. He looks very comfortable at the plate and looks to hit balls hard. Viera has long legs and stands 5-foot-9 and is very athletic. He is very smooth at shortstop and showed soft hands making plays to his forehand and backhand side. Viera will look to stay hot at the plate during the next couple of days.

Eric Fernandez (2023, Miami, Fla.) started on the mound for Coastal on Tuesday and looked sharp. Fernandez threw 1 2/3 innings and did not allow a hit and struck out two. Fernandez had his fastball sitting 72-73 and had great command with it. His curveball was a sharp breaker at 64-65 mph and had hitters looking silly. After throwing his 1 2/3 innings he moved to shortstop and played good defense also. Fernandez went 1-for-3 and looked comfortable at the plate finding consistent barrels.

The center fielder for Coastal, Camdon Frier (2024, Wellborn, Fla.), is an absolute stud and it showed on Wednesday. Frier has very good speed as he runs down balls in center and also glides around the bases. He showed his incredible speed by hitting an inside-the-park home run as he smacked a ball to right and there was not even a throw to the plate. Frier is a fun player to watch and will defiantly be a player to look for in the future. He went 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs scored.

Another player that stood out for Coastal was third baseman Tanner Waldrop (2024, Auburn, Ala.). Waldrop went 3-for-3 with two triples, one RBI and three runs scored. He looks very comfortable at the plate and has some serious pop in his bat. He hits the ball well to all fields and looks to drive the ball in the gaps. Waldrop also looks good at the hot corner as he has a very strong arm and has good reactions on balls hit hard. Waldrop will look to continue to stay hot as the tournament continues.

The leadoff hitter for Central was left fielder Tyshon Patty (2023, Lawrenceville, Ga.). Patty is a tough out at the plate as he looks for pitches early in counts to do damage with and drive the baseball. He also has great speed in the outfield and is very athletic standing at 5-foot-9, 154-pounds. Patty had an incredible stat line going 3-for-3 with one double, one triple, three runs scored and five RBI.

Starting at shortstop for Dominican La Javilla on Wednesday was Marco Terrero Castillo (2023, Distrito Nacional, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic). Castillo looks like a ballplayer and plays a solid shortstop with good hands and a strong arm. Castillo is very athletic and it shows by how easily he fields balls and how he swings. Castillo finds good barrels with his swing and is a line drive hitter. He went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk.

Nash Wagner (2024, Zionsville, Ind.) started on the mound for the North team and had a great outing. Wagner threw five innings allowing only three hits, not giving up an earned run and striking out eight hitters. He works down the mound using his long legs, which gives his fastball good downhill movement. Wagner has a big frame standing at 6-foot-2, 152-pounds and is athletic. He will continue to develop into his body and improve as a ballplayer.

Evan Nickowski (2024, Marble Falls, Texas) shinned on Wednesday having a great day at the plate. He was in the leadoff spot for his team and went 3-for-4 with one double, driving in one run and scoring twice. He is a great leadoff hitter as he takes pitchers’ pitches and is an on-base machine with good speed. He also covers good ground in center making great plays. Nickowski will look to continue to get on base and score crucial runs as his team gets deeper in the playoffs.

The starting pitcher for the Northeast squad on Wednesday was lefthander Joey Fanelli (2024, Swedesboro, N.J.). Fanelli threw a gem of a game when it mattered most, throwing six innings allowing only one hit and striking out nine batters. He ran his fastball up to 76 mph and had his curveball at 60 mph, which really kept hitters off balance. He uses his big frame very well on the mound and has an athletic delivery. Fanelli did what he had to do for his team to pick up the win.

Parker Bridges (2023, Nixa, Mo.) looked solid at the plate Wednesday going 2-for-2 with a double and one run scored. Bridges has a smooth swing as he stands in the righthanded batters box. He finds constant barrels and was a very tough out. Bridges looks for pitches over the middle and looks to do damage with them. Bridges will aim to keep swinging it over the last days of the tournament.

Ridge Whitfield (2029, Charlotte, NC) stands at 6-foot, 158 pounds with an athletic build that should allow him to maintain his mobility and quick-twitch actions as he continues to develop. He bats and throws left-handed. Whitfield locates his fastball to both sides of the plate, mixes his pitches effectively, and keeps hitters off balance. He competes on every pitch and doesn’t back down in big situations. Jake Karpell (2030, Holmdel, NJ) got on the barrel a couple times in game five and totaled three rbis. Started his production with a single then later on hammered a heater down the right field and flew around the bases for a three run inside the park home run. Keeps the hands inside at contact really well and got the head around on the homer. Runs well and can hit it around the yard in the approach.  Luke Sauer (2030 C, FL)  put his hit tool on display with a well-struck double, continuing to show why he is regarded as one of the top catchers in the class. Owns a big frame with present physicality and does a good job keeping the hands connected throughout the swing. The barrel works efficiently through the zone and there is a solid offensive foundation present. Currently ranked as the No. 66 catcher nationally.  Gavin Politz (2030 OF, FL) continued a strong tournament...

Connor Ashley (‘29, FL) has struck out six over six no hit innings thus far. Got the FB up to 87 w/ feel for a sharp two-plane slider. #PGWS @Florida_PG pic.twitter.com/M7mEmTH8pk — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) July 12, 2026 Connor Ashley (’29, Minneola, FL) was stellar on Sunday, striking out seven in a seven inning no hitter. He operates from a medium-to-large right-handed frame with length, room to fill, and lower half strength. Ashley works exclusively from the stretch, starting at the belt before working into a higher compact leg lift, firing down the mound via a long arm action. He releases from a high three-quarters slot, with the fastball jumping from the hand up to 87. Ashley mixed in a sharp 11-5 breaking ball with depth and late bite, a true swing-and-miss offering.  Matthew Hernandez (’29, Miami Lakes, FL) has posted strong numbers on both...

Coppy's Corner: July 14 Summer Edition

John Coppolella
Article Image
The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. And, who knows, maybe somewhere out there Jessica Biel is reading it.    Player of the Week: Carter White – Falmouth Commodores  Talk about making a great first impression! White introduced himself in a very loud and boisterous way this past week by going 9-17 (.529 AVG) with 6 RBI...

High speed look at the FF-SL-CH from '27 RHP Liam McGeady (OH)... #NatElite @PG_OhioValley @Cincy_Legends https://t.co/hhoDL7DBbi pic.twitter.com/Ts79GLPGoU — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) July 12, 2026 Liam McGeady (2027, Liberty Township, Ohio) had the stuff working on Saturday morning, getting the start for Legends Scout 2027. The uncommitted right-hander ran it up to 91 and sat 88-90 with a full starter’s mix. All three of the secondaries played well and project moving forward. The curveball worked in the mid-70s with good depth and healthy shape. The slider operated in the 79-82 range with gyro spin and short break. McGeady rounded out the repertoire with a changeup that showed big fade and depth, proving effective versus lefties. He ended the outing going five ⅔ innings, allowing no earned runs on four hits, striking out six total. The tall and long 6-foot-5,...

With the 2026 MLB Draft officially complete, let's quickly turn our eyes to the 2027 group and do a way too early mock draft. Leading the way is shortstop Brendan Lawson out of the University of Florida, setting the trend as three of the top four names all call shortstop home with Dylan Seward and Carter Hadnot.
