Yesavage comes up big in title game

SANFORD, Fla. – Trey Yesavage stole the show on Tuesday morning, tossing a one-hit shutout over five innings while striking out 12 batters to help propel the Keystone State Bombers to a 8-0 win over Powermill Smeltzer 15u to claim the 2019 PG Super25 15u National Championship at the BOOMBAH Sports Complex.

With the 8-0 win the Pennsylvania-based Bombers went a perfect 8-0, outscoring their opponents 81-13. They were the only team of the 18 in attendance that went unscathed through pool play, much less the entire tournament.

The outing was Yesavage’s second of the event, striking out eight batters over 4 1/3 scoreless innings in an earlier appearance. In total, he didn’t allow an earned run in 9 1/3 innings with a remarkable 20 strikeouts recorded during that time.

Yesavage also stood out at the plate, going 2-for-2 in the title game with a two-run home run in the second inning that at the time gave the Bombers a 3-0 lead. He finished the tournament batting .375 (3-for-8) with a double, the home run and four total RBIs. For Yesavage’s efforts on both side of the ball he was named the event’s Most Valuable Player.

The Keystone State Bombers and Powermill Smeltzer 15u teams each won their semifinal contests by 2-1 scores earlier Tuesday morning to advance to the championship game.

Noah Gelabert, the event Most Valuable Pitcher, tossed five innings for Powermill in their semifinal win, allowing just one unearned run. He too made an appearance earlier in the event and finished with eight innings pitched allowing just one earned run (0.90 ERA) on three hits and no walks with eight punchouts.

Big inning leads to 13u championship

SANFORD, Fla. – In a battled of unbeaten teams heading into the championship game, Hawks GOLD 13u – Piesko rode a seven-run sixth inning to a 11-6 victory in the title game over the Dallas Tigers – Bergman at the 2019 PG Super25 13u National Championship.

The Dallas Tigers had tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning and appeared to have fresh life heading into the bottom of the frame. However, Hawks GOLD had a different idea, sending 11 batters to the plate, with the first five reaching before an out was recorded, to plate seven runs. The biggest blow of the inning came on leadoff hitter Evan Haeger’s two-run triple, his second three-bagger of the game. Haeger reached in all four of his plate appearances, walking twice and scoring twice.

Haeger, Luke Whitney and Jason Bello had two-hit games for the Hawks. Haeger, Whitney and Caleb Bonemer each had two RBI in the winning effort. After hitting .429 (6-for-14) with nine walks, 11 runs scored, five drive in and 10 stolen bases, Haeger was named the event’s Most Valuable Player.

The Dallas Tigers jumped out to an early lead in the game, as a two-out, two-run single by John Moore gave them a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. However, from there starter Colton King did a nice job to settle down and keep his team in the game, scattering six hits and a pair of walks in five innings of work, allowing four runs, two of which were earned.

Event Most Valuable Pitcher honors went to Jr Morrow, who posted a 1.50 ERA in two appearances for the Hawks GOLD. His second appearance came in the team’s 6-3 semifinal win over the Tidewater Horns in which he struck out five batters over the first 4 2/3 innings of the game.

The Dallas Tigers advanced to the championship game by taking down Kangaroo Court Roos National 10-2 earlier Tuesday morning. Louis Bussard drove in three of his team’s 10 runs while John Moore pitched the full five innings for the Tigers, allowing just two unearned runs on four hits and a pair of walks.
