15u South WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1

Landon Schroeder (2022, Round Rock, Texas) was 1-for-2 with a hard-hit single to right field on Saturday morning, walking once and putting together some really impressive at-bats. Schroeder has a physical, 6-foot, 175-pound frame, and he has an athletic presence in the box with an upright and slightly open stance. Schroeder has a direct hand path to contact, and his hands work well with developing use of the lower half. Schroeder’s versatility in the field is impressive as well, as the primary infielder played a good center field Saturday. Schroeder has the present strength and quickness to develop nicely as his career continues to unfold.

Wyatt Wiatrek (2022, Sinton, Texas) is an interesting arm in the 2022 class and he showed signs of some really positive things to come on Saturday morning. Wiatrek has a physical and athletic frame at 6-foot-3, 205-pounds and he uses his lower half well to create good linear direction down the mound. Wiatrek was free and easy from a high three-quarters slot on Saturday, sitting 84-86 mph, topping at 87 with the fastball. Wiatrek has a clean hand path and low-effort delivery throughout; however, he did struggle to get over his front side and down in the zone at times. Wiatrek has developing feel for a curveball at 69-71 mph, and his entire arsenal should become more effective as that pitch continues to develop.

Trey Duffield (2022, Houston, Texas) was 1-for-3 with two RBI on Saturday. Duffield’s lone hit was a loud double to the gap in left-center field, scoring a pair. Duffield starts from a slightly crouched and even stance at the plate, and his tall and slender frame has plenty of room to fill out and add strength. Duffield has quick hands and a direct path to contact, and while he works through the middle of the field with his approach there is some present power to the pull side.

Canon Chester (2022, Sinton, Texas) had a standout day for Texas Twelve Maroon 2022 on Saturday, going 2-for-4 with a single and double. Chester has a physical, 6-foot-2, 205-pound frame and starts from a slightly crouched and even stance at the plate. Chester has a middle-of-the-field approach, driving a pair of balls back through the box on Saturday. Following a hard single to center field in his second at-bat of the day, Chester used his present strength and bat speed to drive a ball deep to the wall in center field for a double. The ball jumps of his barrel when squared, and the power is something that will only develop more as he continues to mature.

Jerson Martin (2023, Norman, Okla.) put on a very impressive, all-around display during Saturday’s game. The primary catcher has some fast-developing receiving skills behind the plate with present arm strength that he is not afraid to show off. Martin caught two runners stealing and threw behind another for an out in the game, and his confidence to put strong throws on the bag was impressive to see. Martin has a simple and upright stance at the plate, and his middle of the field approach lead to a pair of loud, line drive outs that were caught out near the wall in center field. Martin has an athletic 6-foot, 190-pound frame with plenty of room to fill out and add strength.

Landon Usry (2022, Dallas, Texas) was productive out of the leadoff spot for D-BAT Elite Hansen on Saturday afternoon. Usry went 2-for-3 at the plate, highlighted by a hard-hit triple to the gap in right-center field. Usry showed the ability to drive the baseball to all fields on Saturday, pairing the triple with a well-struck single into left. Usry has a young and strong frame at 5-foot-8, 155-pounds, and he flashed excellent speed on the triple. He’s a high motor player that constantly looks to make things happen at the top of the order and it will be interesting to see how the frame develops as he gets older.

– Nate Schweers

Kannon Garza (2022, League City, Texas) led the charge offensively for Adidas Baseball USA 2022 – Moore. Garza employed a smooth, powerful swing with good weigh transfer off his back-side. with some pull-side pop. In two at-bats, he connected for two doubles that he drove deep in the left-center field gap plating three runs along the way. Behind the dish, Garza worked well, stayed underneath the baseball with online and accurate throws.  His development behind the plate should continue to grow and should add more physicality as he matures into his solid frame.

Hitting cleanup for South Texas Sliders 15u Koehl was Viggo Lopez (2022, San Juan, Texas) who had a very powerful performance at the plate. Lopez went 4-for-4 and was a home run shy of the cycle while driving in five runs. The young lefthanded hitter showed some serious pop from his medium frame by crushing the ball twice to deep right field for triples and followed that up with a single up the middle, then roped a double down the left field line. He had a smooth swing, with present bat speed and stayed in the zone through contact and hit the ball on the barrel in all four of his at-bats. Through two games he is slashing .833/.857/1.833 with eight RBI. Lopez has a chance to become a very intriguing prospect if his bat continues develop over time.

Grayson Murray (2022, Troup, Texas) is a two-way player for Performance Baseball Texas 15u. The righthanded pitcher worked four innings, struck out nine while allowing only one hit and zero walks. Out of the windup, he incorporated a small side-step into a high leg kick and hand gather. He had a clean hand break with a long arm circle in the back and threw from a high-three quarters arm slot.  Murray was able to get downhill and worked low in the zone with two pitches. His fastball was 83-86 with late run while using a sharp, late breaking slider for a swing-and-miss pitch at 73 mph. He filled up the zone and threw 73 percent strikes and was very impressive during his outing. At the plate, Murray was 2-for-3 with two singles and a run. Murray has a big, projectable frame and with added strength he should continue to climb in velocity along with creating more juice at the plate.

Jett Williams (2022, Heath, Texas) is the No. 2-ranked shortstop in Texas for the 2022 class. Williams had proper footwork, soft hands, good arm strength and made all the routine plays. He flashed solid range and covered a lot of ground due to his quick first step and advanced reads. Williams was 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple, a single, two RBI and two runs scored. He showed some quickness in his bat, a smooth and fluid swing and a linear plane. Williams has present athleticism and will be an interesting following as his career moves forward.

Braydon McMillen (2029, Downers Grove, IL) an athletic MIF with a top of the order skill set at the plate. Reached base in all 5 games played at UBC this week. Including a 3 hit game in bracket play. Shows a balanced and compact swing at the plate with quick wrists and the ability to get the barrel to the baseball regularly. A quick first step defensively with clean glove actions and a quick release from the shortstop position. Made several athletic plays defensively this past week. Lot of promising impact traits and a real skill set to build on.  Paris Head | IF/OF/RHP | 2029 | IL@WhitesoxAce FB: 86-90 | CB: 73-75 SL: 77-79 | CH: 78-82 One of the best pitching performances of the tournament so far. 28 LHP/OF Rex Johnson (CO) was impressive on the mound today. Quality FB/SL mix. FB(80-85) showed heavy arm side run, generating s/m. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound left-hander worked 5.0 innings, striking out 9 while allowing just 3 hits and no earned runs. The fastball worked 80-85 with arm-side run and got on hitters quickly, generating both swing-and-miss and weak contact. He mixed in a slider with sharp action and showed feel to land it for strikes. UBC South Scout Notes: Days 3-5

Jonell Rodriguez (2027, Spring, Texas) continued his absolute tear this weekend with Banditos 2027 Scout. The Houston commit finished the weekend 7-12 with three triples and two doubles, reaching base a staggering eleven times over the course of the tournament. Super twitchy athlete who is starting to tap into more power this summer. Has always been extremely productive but seems to have leveled up. He has an argument for being the most dynamic player in the state with his 2026 performances. William Bishop (2028, San Antonio, Texas) was a breakout star this weekend for Texas Angels 2028 Lisbon. Was an impossible out this weekend, going 10-14 with five doubles, a triple, and a home run, while driving in eight runs. Uber physical lower half that rotates easily, not a ton of wasted movement in the swing process. Was such a tough matchup for every single arm he faced at UBC. Will Rainer...

Braves Capture WWBA East Title

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
By the end of championship Monday, the Atlanta Braves Scout Team had done much more than win a title. They had validated everything they believed they could become. After an undefeated run through the 2026 PG East WWBA Championship, the Braves captured the 15U championship with an 8-2 victory, finishing off a dominant weekend that featured elite pitching, explosive offense, and contributions throughout the roster. For coach Jed Douglas, the championship represented the results of months of practice, preparation, and a vision that finally came together. “This is our first championship with this group,” Douglas said. “We finally brought it together and for the first time, everything seemed to work just as we designed it when we were building the team, and it was just beautiful this way.” The Braves backed up that vision with one of the most impressive offensive...

PG Summer Showdown Scout Notes

Mason Kennerly (2028, Decatur, Ga.) hit .429 with a .667 OBP, five walks and three RBI in four games last week. He’s already showing the tools to be a big-time power bat in his class, and standing at 6’2 with an athletic frame, he’s one of the more projectable players we saw this weekend. His mechanics play into his size well, creating good hand separation from body on his load, using a medium-high leg kick, and getting a wide base when going into his launch. He uses every bit of his size and natural strength to create a violent swing. He’s got the makings of a really solid prospect, and as he develops and his approach matures, he’ll become a guy that college coaches keep at the top of their radar.  ‘27 Grant Barden (GA) up to 90 mph on the hill. Loose on the mound, whippy arm action. Four pitch mix; FB 87-90, CB 71-72, SL 76-78, CH 79-81. Mixed...

Wolforth Throwing Mentorship: Article 66

Ron Wolforth

The Number That Just Killed MLB Expansion: 1,217   USA Today's Bob Nightengale dropped a bomb shell recently that the baseball world is still digesting. Major League Baseball wants to expand to 32 teams. Team executives are quietly opposing it and the reason has nothing to do with cities or money.   They cannot find enough healthy pitchers.   Between 2020 and 2024, professional baseball performed 1,026 Tommy John surgeries at the minor-league level alone. Another 191 at the Major League level. More than twelve hundred elbow reconstructions in five years on the best young pitchers in the world.   That is not bad luck. That is a system reporting a verdict on itself.   For fifteen years, the youth-baseball industry has chased one number: velocity significantly more than projectability and arm care.    Recruiters scout by it.    Social...

‘27 OF Bryson Rhodes (NE) continues to swing a hot bat in the week. Hammers this single UTM. Rhodes found himself on a tear over the four days, finishing inside the top five in batting top performers. In four games, the uncommitted junior tallied seven hits in twelve at-bats. Of those seven hits, three went for extra bases, including a home run. Short direct stride to impact that displayed well above average bat speed. Worked the middle of the field to pull side. Hard, impactful barrels throughout and was a catalyst as a top of the order bat.     ‘28 RHP Asher Visconti (OH) struck out 7 in his five innings of work. Only allowed one hit...
