14 Northeast: Day 1 Scout Notes

The 2019 WWBA 14u Northeast National Championship held across Long Island figured to showcase the potential of the 2021-2023 graduating classes. Among all potential prospects, a few came out hot on the mound and at the dish, flashing why they belong among the elite of their graduating classes.

Appearing in his third Perfect Game event of the summer, Mason Butash (2023, Chantilly, Va.),  a 6-foot-1, 160-pound infielder and right handed pitcher, was impressive in a brief two inning outing on day one of pool play. Allowing just one hit over two innings while striking out three, Butash rested in the high-70s topping out at 81 mph. He mixed his offerings with a low-70s curveball to keep hitters honest, proving very effective. Butash possesses a long, lean body with a long, high three-quarters arm action as well as a strong lower half. When he is a little shorter and quicker with his circle, Butash flashed low-80s offerings. Butash also batted in the middle of the order and worked at first base after he was done on the mound. Mason finished 2-for-3 with a double at plate.

James Asmus (2022, New Hyde Park, N.Y.) is a well-built 6-foot, 200-pound first basemen and lefthanded pitcher. Asmus threw 2 1/3 innings of one-run-ball in Team Steel Gold’s opening pool play game against the AD Titans on Friday, surrendering only one hit while striking out three. While Asmus showed command issues early in the outing, he settled in and worked around further trouble. Asmus has broad shoulders and throws from a high leg kick, releasing from a ¾ arm slot. He pitched in the high-70s, topping out at 81 mph with his fastball and mixing in a mid-60s curveball and low-70s slider. Asmus’ slider has swing-and miss-potential with good spin and late depth. Asmus also batted in the middle of the order, finishing the day 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored to help his team to an early pool play victory.

Ryan Bailey (2024, Blauvelt, N.Y.) a 5-foot-8, 140-pound right handed pitcher, was impressive in a brief 20-pitch relief appearance for the AD Titans on day one. A 13u eligible pitcher, Bailey threw two-thirds of an inning, striking out two while topping out at 80 mph with his fastball. He mixed in a couple breaking balls during his brief outing to keep hitters off balance. Bailey has an athletic frame and consistent mechanics, along with a low three-quarters arm slot with quick arm action that generates some late sink when approaching the plate. Bailey has a bright future on the mound that will be interesting to follow as he develops.

Taj Farmer (2022, Farmingville, N.Y.) a 6-foot, 155-pound first baseman, led Team Steel Gold to their first pool win of the weekend, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Farmer possesses a tall and lean body with wide shoulders and long arms. Farmer has a quick and powerful swing that generates good lift but can get a little long at times. When Farmer can stay online with his hands finds the barrel. When Farmer is able to fill out his frame in order to handle the length in his swing he will be a legitimate power prospect.

Johnny Robles (2022, Bronx, N.Y.),  a 5-foot-9, 155-pound Infielder and righthanded pitcher, dominated a quality Long Island Junior Ducks lineup on the mound. Robles went 5 1/3 innings for the victory, scattering three hits and two runs while striking out five along the way. Robles pitched off his fastball that sat in the high-70s and topped out at 79 mph. He has an athletic wind-up and throws from a three-quarters arm slot that creates some arm side sink. At the plate in a doubleheader, Robles was 3-for-6 with a home run and three RBI. Robles’ home run accounted for both runs in the Bronx Bombers 2-1 victory, their second game of the day.

James Griffin (2023, Shavertown, Pa.), a 6-foot, 190-pound outfielder, showed off his massive power, hitting a towering home run to right center field on Friday morning. Griffin has an aggressive approach at the plate with a quick, powerful swing that can get a touch long at times. He has good speed in the outfield and tracks the ball well, possessing great arm strength and carry. Griffin, ranked as a Top 1000 in the 2023 class, has all the tools and instincts to make a jump up the rankings with a little bit of polish and experience.

Justin Mills (’27, Braselton, Ga.)- the 6-foot, 190-pound right-handed pitcher tossed a 6-inning complete game shutout for Dingers Scout in a 7-0 win over ECB Astros 18U Navy. The uncommitted Jackson County High School product struck out 12 batters and only walked one while controlling the zone at a 61% strike rate. Mills ran his fastball with arm side run up to 89 mph and consistently worked ahead in counts to stifle the Astros Navy lineup. He coupled it with a tight slider that showed late depth in the mid-70s to record eight swings-and-misses on the offering. A brilliant effort from Mills as he worked east and west while reading swings and avoiding barrels.   Brayden Barrett (’27, Canton, Ga.)- the 6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed pitcher struck out six batters over 3 and 1/3 innings of relief for ECB Astros 18U Navy to get the win over Dirtbags Southeast.
