2019 17u WWBA National Championship: Event Page

The 17th annual 17u WWBA National Championship takes place this week in the Greater Atlanta Area, with most of the top 2020 grads all descending on Georgia to show their talent. A number of top MLB players once played in the same event. Below are the top 10 (plus) drafted players that once played in the 17u National Championship, including draft year and a snippet of what their professional careers have panned out.

Rk. Name Drafted Draft Yr. Career
T-1 Justin Upton No. 1 2005 289 HRs, 35.2 WAR
T-1 David Price No. 1 2007 Cy Young, 39.7 WAR
T-1 Tim Beckham No. 1 2008 380 hits, 59 HRs
T-1 Bryce Harper No. 1 2010 MVP, 197 HRs
T-1 Mark Appel No. 1 2013 Minors – Retired
T-1 Dansby Swanson No. 1 2015 344 hits, 38 HRs
T-1 Mickey Moniak No. 1 2016 Minors – AA
T-1 Casey Mize No. 1 2018 Minors – AA
T-2 Dustin Ackley No. 2 2009 512 hits, 46 HRs
T-2 Jameson Taillon No. 2 2010 3.67 ERA, 29 wins
T-2 Danny Hultzen No. 2 2011 Minors – AAA
T-2 Byron Buxton No. 2 2012 Gold Glove, 280 hits

T-2 Alex Bregman No. 2 2015 All Star, .279 avg
T-2 Nick Senzel No. 2 2016 .271 avg, .820 OPS
T-2 Joey Bart No. 2 2018 Minors – A
T-2 Bobby Witt Jr No. 2 2019 Minors – Rookie

The list could almost be filled by No. 1 overall picks, among which we have gotten a Cy Young, an MVP, hundreds of home runs and plenty of future potential. The same can be said of the No. 2 overall picks on the list. Guys like Mike Trout, Chris Sale, Javier Baez, and many other MLB All Stars who played in the 17u National Championship don’t make the list, because they were drafted outside the Top 2 in their respective drafts.
