Bryce Fehmel, Oregon State

Oregon State senior righthander Bryce Fehmel is one of the more reliable starting pitchers in the nation and he twirled a gem in his senior opener to help the defending national champs improve to 2-0 on the young season. Fehmel was commanding all three pitches throughout the performance, and, one misfire notwithstanding, was both dominant and efficient.

Everything about Fehmel fits the moniker of efficiency from his ability to pound the strike zone but also from a mechanical and delivery standpoint. The arm stroke is short in the back, though the back elbow will get high at foot strike, but there's little wasted movement in his motion and it's athletic enough to repeat and follow through nicely. There's not a ton of effort and everything about the delivery culminated with Fehmel's ability to not only throw strikes but to locate with all three pitches.

Fehmel's line was one of the more impressive thus far during opening weekend, as while he only struck out three batters he allowed only one run and one hit while tossing eight innings on only 91 pitches. He got barreled around a little bit in the first inning but besides that mostly all other results were weak contact, particularly soft fly balls that his outfielders could get under rather easily.

The fastball is what set everything up for Fehmel as the pitch worked 86-90 mph throughout the start and he located it well to either side with his arm-side command being especially impeccable on the afternoon flashing some short sink when low. His changeup was more than an effective neutralizer against lefthanders and his curveball was a great pitch for Fehmel, working in the 74-78 mph range with fairly consistent shape and the ability to be commanded well.

Fehmel is not only going to be one of the more sought after senior signs in the country, but also an invaluable piece to a Beavers team that's biggest strength is their pitching staff. It would not be hyperbole to say that Fehmel has been one of the most consistent, and important, pitchers in Oregon State's prestigious history and started the 2019 season off on the right foot.
